N.E. Corner  Oden Settlers

Many family historians possess a number of unidentified and undated photographs. There are various means to determine the date a photographs including the type, the photographer, the dress and fashion(s) of the day. The props and items within the photo represent the time period such as vintage cars, household items, clothing, shoes, parasols, aprons, decorative details, children's clothing, hats, jewellery etc. Other clues include: hair length on young men, hem length on young women, general hair styles etc.

By comparing your unknown pictures to those known, you can match up clothing and hair fashions, the poses adopted by the subjects, and the background settings in both pictures and you can estimate the date of your pictures. The date from an event e.g. wedding or the age of a young child, whose age could be estimated can help date a photo.  Contribute, please by email.

Oden, Arkansas

1938

Judy has been working on her family history for several years and found this photo which has always been a mystery in John and Angie (Choate) Henderson photograph collection and that the two oldest members of the photo might possibly be Joseph Edgar and Fannie (Hicks) Henderson. Judy's mother  can not recall knowing the couple who is named and can not recognize any members of the photo.  On the back is written Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Hickey 2 & 3 from the right Oden, Ark. 1938.   Samuel Newton Hickey (1884-1970) and Lizzie A. Hickey nee Taylor  (1886-1977) are both are buried in the Oden Cemetery. Posted 18 March 2002. Can anyone identify the Oden citizens?

 Update April 1 2006
Carl Taylor wrote "The man on the far right is Benjamin Fred Taylor (b:1881). I believe he was a brother to Lizzie A. (Taylor) Hickey (b:1886). I am a great grandson of Benjamin. I don't recognize any one else on the photo. If you know who the woman is in the photo below, please let me know.  I have a photo of Benjamin with a unknown woman."  Ben's mother Mattie Caroline Rodgers (b: 3 May 1852, Covington Co., Mississippi; d: 1939 Montgomery Co., AR )

Can anyone identify the car and possible year of the photo? RB or RO on the hub cap. Probably 1930s American four door sedan with all four doors suicide style and a running board. Post World War II suicide style almost universally only the rear doors of four-door cars. Similar to a 1933 Dodge 4-door long wheel base sedan, 2,661 pounds, $US675, 69,074 built, gearbox: 3 speed + back. The old barn in the background is a common style of barns around Oden, Arkansas. It is not the Hickey barn. Mobility is possibly the most noticeable difference between life today and that of our ancestors.

The  John Henry McGough family

This is the family of John Henry McGough and his wife Emily Cordelia Johnson. The little girl in the center just behind them is my grandmother, Mary May McGough and her brother Earnest McGough is standing just behind his father.  On the row in the very back are Benjamin Harrison McGough (John Henry's nephew), Lee Diggs who was married to Marget McGough, daughter of John Henry and Emily Cordelia "Delie". This picture was taken somewhere around 1915.

They were living in Montgomery County at this time, and they lived in and around Montgomery County most of their lives. John Henry is buried in Nelson Cemetery, as is his daughter Mary May (Caldwell). Emily Cordelia is either buried in Mt. Home Cemetery in Mt. Ida or in Peak Cemetery. Her grave had been a rough carved rock that I haven't been able to locate. My grandmother (Mary May) told me Peak Cemetery, and there is certainly evidence to suggest that. She had three children die when they were very young, and I did find several rock markers in Peak that could be her with the children. Photo and information courtesy of  Joyce Meiser. Lee Johnston and family.  Photo taken "in front of a pine thicket in Mena, AR"
Lee Johnston (1880-1864) and wife Orva Johnston (1892-1973) and child.

Lee Johnston was b. Samuel Lee Johnston s/o Samuel Burr Johnston (Samuel B. Johnston) and wife Nancy Elizabeth Holley. This photo was sent to Burr's brother, James Madison Johnston in Abilene, Texas. Burr and Nancy moved to Montgomery Co., AR in 1902 from Roby, Chester Co., TN where Lee was born. In the 1920 Census, Burr and wife lived on Riverview Street in Womble Twp. Burr outlived some of his children, attaining the age of 93, before he passed away in 1951 in his home in Norman. His grandson, Fred Johnston took care of his final arrangements with the Beasley - Wood Funeral Home. I am also seeking Burr's obituary.

Lee married Orva L. Smith 27 Dec. 1911 in Montgomery Co. AR.  Four children died young.  Charles (no dates), Morris (no dates) and William (Aug. 17 1916 - Oct. 26 1916), infants sons of Lee and Orva are buried at the Ferguson Cemetery just north of Norman. The cemetery was started in 1914.
Lee and Orva also sons that survived to adult hood.
Raymond: A Master Sergeant who died in the Korea conflict.
Darrell: Moved to Michigan
John: Born about 1914.
Both Lee and Orva and an infant child who died Oct. 19 1914 and Marie b. Nov. 30, 1925 d. Oct. 29 1999 are buried in Black Springs (Methodist side) Cemetery (east side of the road going north). Lee was a resident of Norman when he applied for his social security number and a night watchman at the lumberyard. We have been unsuccessful in locating him on the 1920 Census in Arkansas.  Dave is hoping an obituary might be located in Montgomery Co. or in Mena, he died 9 Jan 1964 at his home in Norman. If anyone remembers this man please contact Dave.

Lee had a sister and three brothers:
Mary Elizabeth 'Mollie' b.1886 in Jackson TN? d. 1932 in Norman m. John Fletcher Rice
Andrew (b.1891)
Richard
John Whit Johnston
(1877-1950) who also lived most of his life in and around Womble, Montgomery Co., AR. Whit lived on 13th Street, Womble Twp at the time of the 1920 Census. During the 1930's many of Whit's children moved to Michigan to seek employment, and he may have move there too. Some later returned. Fred, one of Whit's sons, worked for the Beasley - Wood funeral home in Mena, and later for the Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen. Whit's youngest son, John Whit Johnston, Jr. was living in Liviona, Michigan, in 2001. John Whit Sr. and his wife Nora are buried at Black Springs (Methodist side) Cemetery. Anyone wishing to share information or photos on this family, please email Dave Johnston. Posted 22 Feb. 2002.

Any museum could run a competition in an attempt to find never-before-seen photographs of the area, and add them to the museum's collection. Old photographs while they might not seem special, they could be the only one in existence of a particular scene or activity. Staff members could plan to offer to help elderly people especially the ones with failing eye sight to go through their photographs and enter them in the competition. All photographs entered in the competition will should be copied for the museum, and the originals returned to their owners. People don't realise the value of the photographs they might have, but they could be rare.
