Oden High School, Montgomery County, Arkansas
Oden High School has an unique way of remembering their graduating seniors. Their names are etched in marble on the walkway in front of the Oden School. During the depression years the names were etched in concrete. The class sponsors assisted with the end of year senior trip, booking motels, driving the bus, chaperone etc.

Northwest Profile Tom Wayne Dillard Rooted in history by Michelle Parks
The Arkansas Democrat Gazette 10 June 2007
SELF PORTRAIT Date and place of birth: Dec. 24, 1948, Sims
Always in my refrigerator are Diet Cokes. Dillard was born in 1948 on a farm near the Montgomery County community of Sims. He grew up in nearby Oden, where he was one of 25 in the high school graduating class. In school, he was strong in history, geography and social sciences, but poor in math and chemistry. "People today assume I was a good student when I was in school, and I wasn't. I was a very mediocre student," he says. He developed an interest in Arkansas history in seventh grade. "All of a sudden, it became clear to me that American history happened here too," he says. "That all the stuff that I read about in American history, that I studied in school, had its relationship to Arkansas." Reading about Civil War battles in Vicksburg, Miss., and Manassas, Va., didn't mean much. But knowing soldiers fought battles in local places such as Little Rock, Helena and Fayetteville made history personal. "I have concluded that I became interested in Arkansas history because I was able to use Arkansas history as the laboratory course for American history. It's the place where we can see history in application," he says.
His father, a logging contractor, died when Dillard was a teenager. His mother was a housewife who later worked at the local school. From her, he understood tolerance, and he also learned the value of hard work and making the most of one's finances. Dillard is the fifth of seven children, many of them much older than he. A brother-in-law inspired his interest in the environment and politics. An antipathy for then-Gov. Orval Faubus led him to become active in the Republican party, specifically in Winthrop Rockefeller's 1966 gubernatorial campaign and later during his two-term administration.
Dillard's acquired knowledge of parliamentary procedure has helped him run meetings and direct groups toward a common goal. He also chose a second year of typing instead of physical education class, and he now types a speedy 70 words a minute. His debate team experience left him able to organize his thoughts and express himself clearly. ....
DEAN OF ARKANSAS HISTORY Dillard earned a degree in American history at State College of Arkansas (now the University of Central Arkansas) in Conway in 1970. He and his first wife have a son, Neil Dillard, who is a Little Rock firefighter. The younger Dillard also has a history degree and enjoys gardening. In 1986, Dillard became the first university archivist for his alma mater, UCA. During 11 years there, he established archives at the UCA library that emphasize the state's environment and music. "The biggest challenge in starting a new archives like that is being able to compete against the larger, more established archives," such as those at UA and UALR, he says. Most of the seven archives in the state collect from the entire state, so it helps to specialize in certain areas. Dillard went on to create another archive and special collections department for the Central Arkansas Library System, a two county library network based in Little Rock. He led the effort to gain a $650,000 endowment from a prominent Little Rock lawyer and businessman to create the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies. In his seven years there, the center went from three to 15 staff members. He raised $110,000 to start a book-publishing program. He also started a popular monthly brown-bag lunch series on historical topics. In his last two years at the library, Dillard raised more than $1.6 million needed to develop the online Encyclopedia of Arkansas, which he thinks "in some ways is my greatest contribution to Arkansas." Many state agencies, individuals and businesses have supported the encyclopedia with money or time, making it a "truly collaborative effort," he says. Tim Nutt, who has worked with Dillard at three places over 20 years, says his boss is "very generous with his time and expertise and knowledge." "He's known as sort of the dean of Arkansas history in history circles," Nutt says.
The couple enjoy eating meals created from their garden produce. A favorite is their wilted lettuce salad made from leaf lettuce, onions and white radishes. The dressing is made with sauteed bacon pieces, the bacon grease mixed with vinegar and sugar, and then all poured on the salad mixture. For Dillard, gardening is fun and provides good exercise; he has arthritis, and it also helps keep his joints flexible. It also increased the property values of their two homes in Little Rock, where he'd built large gardens complete with water features and major infrastructure. Dillard also tackles gardening from a scholarly approach. He is founding president of the Central Arkansas Horticultural Society, lectures on gardening topics and writes a column for Arkansas Gardener magazine. He is editor of Fleur de Lis, a 60-year-old quarterly journal that focuses on Louisiana irises. These irises fascinate Dillard; they're native to the Southern areas that were part of the Louisiana Purchase. They are different from bearded irises, which are native to the Mediterranean. He wants people to know about the native species that's specifically suited to this region's climate. When the Dillard's moved to Northwest Arkansas three years ago, they bought a house on 30 acres near Farmington. Here he grows about 60 varieties of iris, along with several hundred other plants, from trees to moss. As an example of his large-scale gardening, he planted 1,200 daffodil bulbs his first autumn here.
On the walls of Dillard's office are artworks by Arkansas artists. He's gradually building his own collection of Arkansas-related art.
A MASTER STORYTELLER "So many people have the impression that Arkansas has been a failure throughout the decades," Dillard says. "But there are many aspects of Arkansas history that are very uplifting." For example, at the end of the Civil War, nearly all the state's blacks were illiterate. In just 35 years, at the turn of the 20th century, about 60 percent were literate. "That is a phenomenal statistic," he says. "And they did it with almost no help from the federal government. They did it pretty much through their own local efforts, starting with local school districts." Dillard's favorite period in Arkansas history is early on, from the founding of the territory in 1819 to about 1850. That time was filled with individual personalities doing "interesting, odd, unusual, eccentric things." Jim Huffman of Fayetteville, a friend of Dillard's and a member of the Arkansas History Commission, says he enjoys their frequent dinners for the lively conversation. "He's very straightforward, and he will speak what's on his mind," Huffman says. "I love to hear his stories. He's a master storyteller." Those stories are often about characters from Arkansas history.

Graduated from Oden. Phillip Wilson is at 39 the youngest community college president in Arkansas. Wilson said he’s never looked at age as a barrier. The skill he brings as a president, he said, comes from his experience as a teacher, an administrator and a leader in student affairs. “If it’s a three-legged chair, I’ve been all three legs,” he said. “I’ve been exposed to all areas of an institution.” Wilson joined Rich Mountain Community College in Mena in 2000 as an instructor of computer systems technology. Wilson grew up near Mena and returned to the small town after earning his MBA at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and working in Dallas for a short time. “There was an opportunity to teach a class here at the community college,” he said. “I stayed in the classroom for approximately five years, then had the opportunity to move to administration.” Wilson became president in September 2024. He said his success as an administrator is linked to his experience with the local communities. “I understand the people of Polk County, Scott County, Montgomery County. I grew up there, on a map dot,” he said. “I wouldn’t say I’ve earned my title, but I’ve been able to speak the language of our local citizens.”
Wilson believes a community college is a career springboard for rural residents. “A rural community college is there to provide an opportunity for those that generally have the most hurdles to overcome,” he said. “We are rural, and therefore we are restricted by our geography. Mena is an hour and a half from anywhere. The importance of a rural community college is immeasurable. It gives opportunity to those who have never had opportunity.”
