Local news writer, columnist and educator celebrates 90th birthday by Danielle
Cummings.
Ruth Horne, longtime, Norman news writer. Ruth's nephew, Dr. Mark Black, along
with a member of his staff, created the display board featuring a timeline and
photos of memorable events in her life, beginning with her birthday on March
25th, 1919. Ruth assisted on "Montgomery County Our Heritage." Her sister Betty
told a story. As the story goes, the Horne family was expecting company and
young Ruth was sent out to retrieve a pullet for dinner. Ruth ran her hand under
the floor of the log barn and felt something "peaking" at her hand. Believing it
to be the aforementioned pullet, she peered underneath to grab it. It was at
this point, she made, too close for comfort, eye contact with a big copperhead
snake. She realized she had been bitten and the family sent for help.
Ruth was born at Womble (now Norman) in 1919. She attended
school by walking a four-mile round trip daily, and for nine years, did not miss
a single day of school.
Her love of education progressed after graduating from Norman High School in
1927 as salutatorian. In the fall of 1937, Horne began attending a Presbyterian
college called Arkansas College (now Lynn College) in Batesville. While there,
she was Editor of the college newspaper and has continued to write throughout
her life for various publications, including the Montgomery County news and the
Glenwood Herald for 23 years.
After graduating Ruth became a teacher at Old Union School
near El Dorado, and while she taught at other schools during her professional
career, her teaching years were concluded at Old Union High where she had taught
English, Spanish and served as Librarian.
