Day is the first Sunday in August.
Located nine miles west from Mt. Ida, gravel roads most of the way. Take a map. From Oden take the road south over the bridge to Mt Olive Church at Hog Jaw and head over the hill, the road is directly behind the church (a beautiful drive in autumn), at T intersection make a left then 20 feet turn right, continue towards Black Springs, crossing the low water bridge. If you go the wrong way at the T-intersection - to the right you will see the road to North Fork Lake, four miles. Wrong direction.
Southfork. Taken from the low water bridge on the way to Gaston.
There are perch in the creek and local swimming hole here.Just go straight. Don't turn off gravel road. Soon you will be following the creek on your right and the rock stone work for the embankment will come into view on your left then the little weatherboard church and cemetery. Both still in use and well maintained. The two out houses, one for men, one for women, are still standing attached to the back of the church across the dog trot, but they are locked. In 2001 the trees around the church are white-washed about half-way up their trunks, it is very pretty. In 2009 this white paint is no longer visible. Black, Gaston, Rowton and Warren surnames predominate the cemetery. The oldest headstone is 1881, Henry E. Black, Row 7p. There is a gray granite rectangular headstone plaque, Row 12z, on James Bullock Gaston and Lucinda McConnell Gaston's graves, proclaiming them as progenitors of the Gaston Community.
The church is locked. Has no air conditioning or window units.
The buildings to the left of the dog trot are the toilets.
Gaston Cemetery is located at latitude - longitude coordinates N 34.5476 and W -93.75825. 751 feet altitude. The gravel road north leads to Oden and south to Black Springs. It is a very lovely, peaceful setting beside a creek and the dusty gravel road. I heard Canadian geese squawking when I was doing the cemetery transcription. The cemetery is about half way between Black Springs and Oden in Montgomery County, Arkansas alongside a gravel road, see #13v. Road can be seen behind headstone. I transcribed the cemetery late in the afternoon on May 19 2009 and did not have time to go back to do a final check as the sun was setting. There were 482 graves marked of these 46 marked with metal crosses, 52 marked with concrete blocks, 8 marked with field stones, four marked with funeral home markers. 27 veterans - including four Vietnam veterans and 3 Korean veterans. There are five large US flags on tall poles placed at veterans graves around the cemetery, one can be seen in the background of photo #6t. 1
At Gaston Cemetery I noticed two servicemen who died during WWII. United States exhumed many American servicemen in Europe and the Pacific and repatriated them with military funerals.

Status: DNB3 infant stones, two graves marked with bricks and one homemade headstone built of brick in 1970 but deteriorating rapidly. 377 named individuals with headstones. In 1968 there was approximately 251 readable headstones and 76 unmarked graves. There are approx. an additional 50 headstone transcriptions in cemetery book that I didn't find headstones for as well as additional information. I walked the cemetery twice. The majority of the headstones were legible. This active well maintained church cemetery is miles from the nearest town.
There are approximately 14 rows. Row 14 & Row 13 are close to the road. Each row was transcribed left to right to make it easier to find a headstone. To find a row note first headstone in row [a] and count out. Remember some rows are not lined up evenly.

Not far from
North
Fork Lake where there is good fishing.
It is easy to get lost around there if you are not familiar with the back
roads.
Map.
North Fork Lake
Species Present: Largemouth bass, sunfish, catfish
Seasons: All year.
Access: Boat access at the lake with a concrete ramp and graveled parking area. There is also an accessible fishing pier on the northwest side of the lake that includes a access road, trail and wooden pier. The trail to the site still is being worked on.
Camping: No developed sites.
Comments: This 65 acre flood control lake offers good warm water fishing opportunities. It receives a fair amount of fishing pressure but still produces nice catches and some exceptional bass periodically. Rod and reel or pole fishing only. The catfish daily limit is 5. Shocking.
