He encouraged his seven children to go into teaching. Thelma taught until she married Terry A. Humble. Thelma's brother Hal taught until he became county School Supervisor in 1953. By the time Mr Hal Goodner was elected there were four main school districts and three of these schools had wing schools and all of these were brought into the main schools within eight years.
"Mister Hal" Hal Goodner officially retired as county school supervisor last week and was honored at a luncheon given by courthouse employees and officials. Hal Goodner brought to a close a career of forty seven years of service in the field of education last week as he retired as county school supervisor.
Goodner, 69, was born and reared in Oden and finished high school in 1931. He began his teaching career that year and obtained a bachelor of science in education in secondary education from Henderson State Teacher's College (now Henderson State university), by going to college in the summertime and on Saturdays. Flossie, his wife, taught at Oden for thirty eight years. During the depression teachers used to get paid for teaching eight months and then were asked to donate one month to get the full school year in because the schools did not have enough money to pay then the full year.
In 1953 Goodner was hired as county school supervisor, a position he held for the past twenty five years. The number of county school has been reduced from a one time high of 86 to only three and you don't have the boundary disputes you used to have.
