The school was located nearer Big Fork (Polk County) as it was right at the county line, just past where you turn off Highway 8 on Sulphur Springs Road.  It was barely in Montgomery County. The school was located on the banks of the Caddo River--the road (now Hwy 8) ran differently at that time, and ran beside the school and river.  After having to be rebuilt because of a wash-out, the next time it washed away in a big flood, the kids were transferred to Alf to Oak Grove--later called Sulphur Springs School.

Some of these children went on to high school.  The children on part of the Sulphur Springs route, right at the county line, had their choice of going to Mena or Norman, and some went to one and some to another.  The Head kids all went to Norman, but their cousins, almost directly across the highway, went to Mena.

The Cox home--Etta's dad--was home to the Slatington Post Office, and store, and was the last home before entering Polk County.  It was almost directly across from the turn-off for Little Missouri Falls.
