Notes for ROBERT McCONNELL:
Robert McConnell and his father Arthur came to what is now Montgomery Co., AR in 1833, settling on the South Fork of the Ouachita River. Arthur homesteaded land two miles upstream from Mount Ida, and Robert homesteaded the land across the river opposite Mount Ida. He entered this land for patent January 31, 1843, the SW1/4 NW1/4 Sec. 24, T. 2S, R. 25W which was plotted into town lots on May 28, 1845 and sold to Montgomery County as a new town site on January 7, 1846 by Robert and Sarah, his wife, for the sum of fifty dollars. Robert and Arthur's first documented evidence of living in what is now Montgomery County comes from the old Hot Spring County Tax Roll of September 6, 1834. Robert was appointed magistrate of Hot Spring County on October 27, 1835. Origins of this family are believed to come from Arthur and Elizabeth (Wilson) McConnell of Hopewell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania who lived in that area in the 1770's and 1780's. Arthur McConnell, Jr., moved to Ohio and met and married Nancy Miller February 7, 1798 in Adams county, Ohio. Robert was born in 1799 in Ohio and moved with his father down the mighty Ohio River to a place near Cairo, Alexander County, Illinois about 1815. Robert was found in Old Johnson County (now Alexander) in 1818 and 1820 with his wife and one daughter, and Arthur was there for a time before moving across the river to Livingston County, Kentucky. The family removed to near Old Washington, Hempstead County, Arkansas. Early tax records and census give other names besides Robert who were children of Arthur and Nancy McConnell: James, the second oldest; Wilson; Arthur II; Thomas and Nancy. Nancy married Harrison Collier on July 30, 1835. Robert McConnell's wife Sarah was born in 1802 in Kentucky and her marriage around 1815 to Robert, begat eight children: Nancy, Lucinda, James, Cintha, Miller, Emily, Robert Wilson and David. Nancy married Jesse Royal on May 14, 1836 in the county and both dies in 1850. Lucinda married James B. Gaston on February 19, 1846, producing the county's Gaston Clan. James McConnell married Mrs. Harriet K. Howell on December 10, 1846 and died in March, 1863 while serving in Company I, 33rd Arkansas Infantry, during the Civil War. Cinthya married Ransom J. Barber on July 31, 1847, and this family settled around the Sims area. Ransom was bushwacked and killed on April 24, 1862 during the Civil War. Miller McConnell married Visa Elizabeth Davis about 1853 and this family moved to Logan County, Miller served in Company I, 33th Arkansas Infantry, during the Civil War. Emily married Harvey Stacey about 1857, moving to Brady, Texas and later to Glen Rose, Texas. Robert Wilson McConnell married Ann Garrett on April 19, 1858 and died March 25, 1862 while serving with Company F, 40th Arkansas Infantry, during the Civil War. David McConnell married Louisa Jane Meredith on April 21, 1851, David served in Company F, 4th Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War, and on January 6, 1891 he married 2ndly Nancy Hughes. Notes for LOUIS MILLER (SUDE) BARBER:
Louis Miller Barber was better known as "Sude", a nickname given him by a playmate when he was a child. Louis lived in Montgomery Co. most of his life and a short time in Texas, after his father was killed, his mother Cinthia, with the unmarried children moved back to Montgomery Co., Arkansas. Louis, being the eldest son took over the management of the family, he homesteaded the land known as the Nelson Land on the Ouachita River between Mount Ida and Pencil Bluff. Louis had a sister, Mary Amerson, and two brothers, Joseph Oliver and William Wilson Barber, who are buried in the Amerson Cemetery. They sold the land in the Nelson Bend and moved to Sims and homesteaded what is known as the Bill Carter place.

Louis married Dollie Ann Summitt dau. of John Francis Summitt and Emaline Shaffer in 1878 Montgomery Co., AR. They sold the land know as the Bill Carter place and homesteaded a big tract of land north of Sims, near the foot of the Chalybeat Mountain which was near his wife's family. Louis sold it off down to one hundred seventy acres and donated one acre for a cemetery, which is known as the Barber Cemetery. Louis built a big one room house out of logs that they cut themselves, then as his family increased, they added to the log house. Louis's mother Cinthia and brothers, Joseph Oliver and William Wilson lived with him as long as they lived, his brothers having never married, as they died young, Joseph Oliver was struck by Lightning.

Louis was a Postmaster along about the year 1894 at Sims, Cinthia his mother lived to the age of ninety six and died in the year of 1916. Louis and Dollie had nine children, six living to maturity and to raise families, the children were James Randolph, Dosh, Ransom, Wesley, Newt, and Dessie. After his wife Dollie died, Louis married Florence Ollar dau. of William Jess Ollar and Matilda in 1907 at Sims, Montgomery Co., AR and William Jess Ollar and Louis had know one another when they were boys. William Jess Ollar's parents are buried in the Reed Cemetery at Story, Montgomery Co., AR, so they were natives of Montgomery County also. Louis and Florence also had nine children, eight lived to be grown and raise families, these children were Jessie Cleveland, Okla Matilda, Theodore Lincoln, Maudie Florence, Bonnie Bluebell, Thomas Woodrow, Luke Penrod and Emma Idell. Louis had built a storeroom onto his house and here he sold groceries, dry goods and patent medicines. He also owned a sorghum mill where he made sorghum for almost everybody in the community. He also owned a cotton gin and three rent houses which he rented to share croppers. He had cattle, horses and hogs running in the mountains, as there were no stock laws then. Louis Barber was well know and a hard worker, but sometimes the going got rough as he was getting older and couldn't do the work that he use to do. His second wife, Florence, died in 1939 at the age of sixty three and, as all of his children were married by this time, he was left alone, he tried to live by himself for a while, but he was almost blind and it became impossible, so he lived among his children that were near him, Ransom, Wesley, Jessie, Dessie and Idell.

Later he sold his place, Jeff Stovall owns part of it and lives in the part of the house that is still standing, one of Louis's grandsons, Tom Barber, owns Louis's place and part of his great grandfathers (Ransom Barber) place, Tom Barber also has a sword that his great grandfather Ransom J. Barber used in the Civil War, Tom's grandfather Louis gave it to him when he was a boy, and he has kept it all these years. Louis Barber died in 1948 at the age of Ninety three at the home of his daughter Dessie Fair.
