Surnames: Abbott, Breshears, Godwin, Qualls, Robbins, Pitts
I have a great picture of the 16th Avant Baseball team. I was looking through
some of my mom's old pictures and came across it. The picture was taken about
1909 by "Simp." I am not sure who Simp is. I think his last name was possibly
Abbott. The name of the players listed in the photo are as follows:
Wm Allen "Bill" Abbott
Arthur Cornelious "Neil" Breshears
Wm. Pink Godwin
Will Qualls
Albert Godwin
George Breshears
Wesley Godwin
Ed Robbins
Jim Pitts
I have family ties to most of those listed.

Godwin is kin to me through the Lamb line and he also married my gg aunt.
Many thanks! would love to swap information on these also.

Thank you for the obit info on John Edward Waltjen. It is progress of a sort. At
first I did not think there was a connection but after some further searching I
belive John Edward was a son of Jane P. and her first husband who was also a
Waltjen.

My great grandparents are listed as living in Montgomery County in Caddo on the
1910 census. John and Sarah C. Rose McCoy were from Wilkes County, North
Carolina. They were in Texas about 1902. Now I find them in AR in 1910.
They are with two of their sons, James Wesley and David B. and two grand
daughters. Many of my McCoys are buried in the Williams Cemetery in Smith County
Texas. I am curious if anyone knows of any descendants of my John and Sarah who
might be in AR especially Montgomery or surrounding counties. I am also trying
to locate the burial place of John and Sarah McCoy possibly near Caddo Gap or
wherever the town of Caddo would have been located.
Thanks,

REMEMBERING ARKANSAS Rural families looked forward to peddlers' visits
TOM W. DILLARD 13 April 2008
The Arkansas Democrat Gazette
When I imagine how most Arkansans lived a century ago, rurality immediately
comes to mind. Only in the modern era have most Arkansans lived in what is
defined as urban areas. Travel was slow for our rural ancestors, and trips to
town were infrequent. This relative isolation was occasionally relieved by the
visit of a peddler.
Peddling took many forms and was practiced in a variety of ways. I am not
including "drummers" in this column - though certainly the names were often
interchanged. I define peddlers as selling directly to the public - often in
isolated areas, while drummers usually represented a single company or a line of
products and mostly sold to businesses. The earliest peddler I could document
was the wheelchair-bound Thomas Fayette Jeffries, who journeyed from New Orleans
to Hot Springs in 1860. He was seeking treatment for his afflictions at the
bathhouses in Hot Springs, but he paid his way by peddling a small trunk of
books, paper, pens and notions. Once in Hot Springs, Jeffries broadened his
stock to include a local newspaper and pictures of the springs.
It was the rural peddler who performed a service that was eagerly awaited by
farm families across the state. One Ozark peddler was described as dismounting
from his cart and carrying into the house "armloads of tinware, pots and
skillets and the changeable silks which were so much in demand inthe early part
of the century." An occasional luxury item, such as a scented soap, had special
appeal.
Beginning in the late 1800s, a growing number of Jewish peddlers traversed the
state - the poorest ones often carrying their wares on their backs. This
phenomenon resulted from the influx of poor East European and Russian Jewish
immigrants in 1880-1900. One Jewish peddler fondly remembered in the Ozarks was
Barney Lottle, who traveled in a cart pulled by two calico ponies. His "amazing
cart" was designed to display his wares: "Tinware, laces, silks, and calicoes as
well as `Arabian jewelry' and mystic articles which had come from far-off India
were hung on the posts and crossbars and spread on the shelves and the floor of
the cart." Undoubtedly, the most successful peddler in Arkansas history was Iser
Hiram Nakdimen, a native of Russia, who settled in Fort Smith in 1894. A
religious Jew and Zionist, Nakdimen had peddled tinware before his arrival in
Arkansas. He prospered in Fort Smith, engaging in manufacturing, newspaper
publishing and banking. By 1914, Nakdimen owned 16 banks in Oklahoma and three
in Arkansas.
Not all peddlers prospered, of course. Especially during lean economic times,
sales were hard to make. Otto Ernest Rayburn wrote in his book Ozark Country
about the thrifty nature of the rural poor: "One day a peddler came along
selling matches, twelve in a little wooden box for a dime. We purchased some of
them, but they were used only on special occasions or when we `lost fire.'" Hard
work, long hours and small profits were not the only drawbacks to peddling.
Until the 1950s, roads in Arkansas were infamous for their poor condition.
Peddlers drove their carts through deep mud, along rock-strewn paths and across
innumerable streams. A peddler in Izard County in the early 1900s claimed he
crossed the same creek 32 times.
During the early 20th century peddling began to change, with the independent
marketer being replaced by company agents. The best examples of these peddling
corporations were the W.T. Rawleigh Company and the J.R. Watkins Medical
Company. Both were headquartered in the upper Midwest. W.T. Rawleigh got his
start selling his wife's patent medicines and Watkins started out making a
liniment.
By 1920, Rawleigh and Watkins had built a network of factories across America to
supply their peddling work force. Historian Lu Ann Jones in her study of
Southern farm women noted that in 1921, the Rawleigh Company manufactured 125
products: "During a visit by `the Rawleigh man' customers could buy everything
from blood-purifying tonics to vanilla flavoring and lemon extract, cinnamon and
nutmeg, White Rose and Anna May Bouquet perfumes, shampoo and face lotion, and a
powder to rid chickens of lice." Improved economic conditions and the better
road system after World War II brought a gradual end to corporate peddling.
Independent peddling continues to this day.
At the risk of sounding like an agent for Donald Harington, the Fayetteville
novelist, I must recommend his Architecture of the Arkansas Ozarks (1975) if you
want a vivid description of the impact a peddler could have. Peddler Eli Willard
of Connecticut plied a settler's wife, Sarah Ingledew, with compliments and sold
her a pair of scissors. Jacob Ingledew convinced the peddler to bring him some
"winder lights," the first glass in that part of
Newton County.

Susan,
Thank you very much. I think what I am looking for doesn't exist, but what I am
looking for is the name of the Hilton who was the father of Matilda's two Hilton
Children.
Thanks to suggestions from you and others I have found the Goodner cemetery and
have discovered many of the people in my family tree buried there. However, I
have yet to find Marion Hilton whose name does appear on the death record of
James R Hilton. I did find James on a census record with Matilda, her brother
and her other child and another with Matilda and her husband Hezekiah Ellison.
The death record is easy to read and the parents listed are Marion Hilton and
Matilda smith. The name of the informant on the death certificate is Mrs.
Juanita R Cordell, on 4-17-1962. I'm probably not going to find any further
information. It may be one of my brick walls similar to the one I hit when
trying to find any record of the father of my husband's mother.

Re: [ARMONTGO] Jesse Lay, Julia Duncan Lay and John W. Lay
List user 2/13/2007
John W. Lay has been a bit of a mystery to us. He is my husband's grandfather,
and died in 1951, five years before my husband was born.
I found John Willard Lay, Julia, Ave (or A.V...I wonder where that name came
from) and Lula (nee Ryan) in Dent, Pottawamie, Oklahoma in 1920. Ave went to
California, and is buried in Tulare, as are two of his sons. I haven't yet found
where Ave's wife Lula is buried.
Jesse Lay was born 30 AUG 1849 in Campbell, Tennessee. He died 5 FEB 1894.
Julia Ann Duncan was born 3 JAN 1855 in Scott County, Tennessee. She died 23 JUN
1939. They were listed as living in Mountain or Cedar Glades, Arkansas. They
were buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, and relocated to New Mount Pleasant
Cemetery before Lake Ouachita was formed.
Jesse and Julia Ann (Duncan) Lay had the following children.
Mary L. Lay was born about 1873 in Scott, Tennessee
William L. LAY was born 1 August 1876 in Tennessee. He died in Arkansas 5 July
1897.
Marline E. LAY was born in Dec 1878 in Tennessee
Maude E. LAY was born in Mar 1881 in Tennessee. She married William Jasper Muse.
Michael J. (or Joshua Michael) LAY was born 13 Nov 1883 in Huntsville, Tennessee
Ave LAY was born on 11 Apr 1886 in Tennessee. He married Lula Ryan. He died on
24 Nov 1957 in California. He is Buried in Tulare, CA.
Bertha Belle LAY was born in 2 Mar 1890 in Tennessee. She married George E.
Muse.
John Williard LAY was born on 2 Nov 1893 or 1894 in Cedar Glades, Arkansas.
He was born either a few months before his father died or just short of 9 months
after his father died.
.
I am trying to prove if my husband's grandfather is this John Lay. He died in
September 1951.
John Lay is buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery in Mount Vernon, AR
His WWII Draft Registration card lists him as working for the Arlington Hotel in
Hot Springs. According to the card, he lived at Crystal Rte., 1/2 mile
E. Gardner School, Hot Springs. J.M. Lay in Ashdown Ark is listed as person
who would know where he was. I found Joshua Michel Lay's WWII Draft
Registration. He lived in Ashdown, Ark, and was a telegraph Operator for the
Kansas City Southern RR.
Any connections here?

I have not seen this book...I guess it is out of print. Thanks for the info, as
I hadn't found this John's death info! It looks like this John Lay is not my
husband's grandfather, as our John Lay died in 1951. I have also been
researching another John Lay in Mount Vernon, AR, and found he died in 1951, so
that looks like that one is our guy. I am waiting for his death certificate
info.

some family connections.

I wondered what Duncan's you mentioned. My grandmother was Rosa Ellen Duncan
Suttles Webb. She was born in Mulberry, Ar.
Has anyone heard of South Fork Cemetery, Montgomery Co. AR.
Where would that be located in Montgomery Co.?
Private Robert Bogle enlisted in Company F, 4th Ark Reg., CSA at Miller's
Springs, MO., 17 Aug. 1861. He traveled 300 miles on foot from Montgomery Co. AR
to join. The 4th Ark. Regiment was reoganized at Corinth MS 8 May 1862. Robert
died April 17, 1866, not long after returning from the war. Probably have died
as a result of some illness contracted at Rock Island.
He is buried in South Fork Cemetery in Montgomery County.

Hope this may be helpful. I did a census check for your Bounds surname for
Montgomery Co. AR for 1910, 1920 & 1930. No Bounds were found, just Bonds, in
Womble Township of Montgomery Co., there is still an area called Womble next
door to the city of Norman, AR.
There were no close matches for your data that I could find in the census.

Hi Sandy:
It has been sometime since we last communicated. I feel like you sometimes about
the Revis (or Reavis) family. It has been very difficult to find any information
on them. It has been sometime since we traded files. It's probably time to do it
again. I know mine has grown 3 or 4 times the size of the one I sent to you
before. I'm sure yours has grown some too.
I did get a couple of items from your posting: (1) you apparently have their
name as "Reavis" and I have it as "Revis". Also, I noted you have the wife's
name as Nancy whereas I have never found her name. By the way, did I send you a
copy of the picture of Seneth and her parents when she was about 2 years old?
If you want to trade and update our files, let me know. Just email me at
nogeeks2000(a)hotmail.com.

remember my grandmother, Ester Abbott talking about Burley Abbott. My grandma
Ester married Moses Taylor Breshears, Jr. So we are also related on the
Breshears side. I don't have much on the Revis line but I'd be glad to share
what information I have. You can write to me to sandyrn(a)cox.net.

Hi Luevillie: Nice to hear from another cousin. I'll give you a snapshop of what
I know. LeeRoy Sr married Olivia about 1864 in Arkansas after his first wife,
Sarah Murray died. He and Sarah had a fairly large family together. He had two
children with Olivia, Burley and LeeRoy Jr. Burley was born in AR in 1868 and
LeeRoy Jr was born in AR in 1872.In 1876 LeeRoy Sr died in Arkansas. As
you can see, he didn't die during the civil war. I haven't found any of the
Abbott's yet that were killed during the civil war.
After LeeRoy Sr's death, Olivia married Allen Bryant Sutton in Dec 1876. Allen
Sutton raised Burley and LeeRoy Jr.
For further discussion you can conmtact me directly at nogeeks2000(a)hotmail.com
I see that Sandy has also responded to you so between the two of us we should be
able to provide you with good information on your Abbott and Breashers
ancestors.

Yes, thank you so much. This particular census gave me the approx. year of
marriage of Brice and Permelia, which was helpful. Thank you for looking in the
cemetery records.
Brice did fight for the CSA and received a pension, so I've even looked in
national cemeteries. They could be in an unmarked grave -- I just have to be
grateful for what I have found so far ! Thanks again ! C
