George Edward Sweeney
Submitted by Bill SweeneyGeorge Edward Sweeney, son of Anthony Bernard Sweeney and Mary Sweeney nee Murry. The Sweeneys lived at two locations. First at 511 5th Street and later at 406 Beech St, Texarkana, Ark. The latter was a new home built for the large Sweeney family. Anthony B. Sweeney was an early pioneer of Texarkana, Ark. having come there in the early 1880's.
George was born 22 Dec 1897, Texarkana, Miller County, Ark. He was the 4th child of his parents. He had brothers, John, Anthony (Andy), Joseph O., Leo T. and a sister Mary E. (Mamie).
He attended school in Texarkana, Ark.and served in the U.S. Navy during WW1. He attained the rank of Seaman 1st Class and made several trips over to France before the war ended. He later was Honorable discharged. George received the Victory Medal and Button. He came home and he later moved to El Paso, Texas, where he worked for that city as a Police Detective.
It was there that he met his future wife, Lillian Leona Davis. When Lillian moved to Los Angeles, George quit his job with the Police Dept and followed her to Los Angeles where they were married on 3 June 1925. George got on with the Los Angeles Fire Department and there he worked for over 40 years and retired from the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1967. George received many accolades during his many years with the LA Fire Dept. When he retired he was with the Arson Division.
George and Lillian had two daughters and three grandchildren. George died 29 Dec 1985 and his wife Lillian would follow on 23 Nov 1988. Both he and his wife are buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Los Angeles, California.
