MEET
HENRIETTA HINSON GARRETT
Submitted by: Helen McMindes (calark2@yournet.com)

Dividing Line

Henrietta Hinson Garrett, b 11 Mar 1817-d 19 Oct 1900. She was married 15 Nov 1838 to Temple H. Garrett. They were parents of Clementine Garrett Angel and were my grgrgrandparents.

Henrietta Hinson Garrett was born in KY, married in TN (think Hickman Co). The picture was taken in Marion Co. AR probably in the late 1890s. She lost two sons and her husband during the Civil War. William Bradley was killed at the battle of the Elkhorn, and John Wesley and his father were killed by bushwhackers on Cave Creek at Richland in Searcy County. Two daughters, Clementine and Elizabeth drove a oxteam and wagon to the site where an old lady named Cash had buried them. They started back to where they lived near Eros in Marion County. The stench became so bad that they stopped at what is known as Newton Cemetery and buried five of the six men who were killed in one grave. A few years ago the SCV procured a headstone. It has the names of the men on one side and the story of the massacre and of the women going for them.
