What Records To Use

When a Courthouse Burned

Courthouse

When I posted the information about the courthouse having burned on the Arkansas E-Mail List. Faye (known as Birdlady on the e-mail lists) sent me the following information. I'm very grateful and hope that it will help one of you.

Faye says "Even the burned counties in Arkansas have many records available thru the state and federal government. (for those who might not know)

1. Original Land Patents/Federal

2. Civil War enlistment Records/Federal & State

3. Civil War Pension Records/Federal & State

4. Southern Claims Files by Gary B. Mills

5. Marion County Tax Records 1841-1866 by Desmond Walls Allen many of these include Section/Township/Range of Land.

6. Goodspeeds Biographical Memoirs of Arkansas

7. Turnbo's Tales of the Ozarks by Silas Turnbo

8. Mexican War Records

9. Centennial History of Arkansas by Herndon

10. Historical Review of Arkansas by Fay Hempstead

11. A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region/Goodspeed

12. 1820-1920 Census Reports

These are just a FEW of the sources to trace your EARLY Marion County ancestors (or for any BURNED county in Arkansas), that come to mind for me besides the materials Linda mentioned from the local library in Marion County. (Burned counties are a CHALLENGE)."
