Idaho Statesman, August, 1999.We mourn the loss of Dallas Henry Harris, who died Sunday, August 1, 1999. One day before his 84th birthday, Dallas was born August 2, 1915, at Pettigrew, Arkansas, he was the sixth child of a family of 10 children. The family earned their livelihood by operating a family sawmill and farming around Ozark, Arkansas.
Dallas moved to Meridian, Idaho, in 1936, following other relatives who had moved to Idaho during difficult economic times in Arkansas. In 1937, he returned to the Arkansas - Oklahoma area where he met and married Alta Watson, his wife of 62 years. In 1938, they returned to Idaho, where they lived thereafter. In 1939, Dallas and his brother Ivan, established Harris Brothers lumber Company in the Thorn Creek area. At Thorn Creek they
etablished a "Lumber Town" wih a church and a school and homes for workers, many of whom were relatives, in 1945, Harris Brothers Lumber Company was moved to Idaho City. Then in 1952, after the sawmill burned for the second time, Dallas and Ivan purchased a sawmill on Warm Springs Avenue, east of Boise and thereafter established Harris Brothers Lumber Company in Boise, Harris Brothers was sold to Boise Cascade in 1961.After the sale of Harris Brothers, Dallas & Ivan acquired a ranch at Highway 21 and Eckert Road and raised Hereford cattle and Apalosa horses. In 1967, Dallas bought Producers Lumber Company and again became active in the lumber bussiness that he enjoyed so much. He had the idea for and began laying the foundation for the Harris Ranch
Developement at least 20 years ago. He served in many professional organizations with the timber industry.Education was a special interest to Dallas and he was active in the establishment of Magic Valley Christian Camp in Albion, Idaho and was a long time member of the board of directors of Hardin Christian College in Searcy, Arkansas. He and his brother Ivan donated 22 acres of land for Camp Ivydale, a Christian Camp near Idaho City. Dallas & Alta were
active members of the Eldorado Church Of Christ thoughout their lives. Dallas was a longtime Elder of the Eldorado Church of Christ in Boise.Dallas was active in the Democratic party and had many fund raising events at the Ranch in the Barber Valley. He served on the Ada planning and zoning Commissions, various livestock clubs and community organizations. Dallas is survived by his wife, Alta, four children, Felica, Gary, Randy and Mildred, six grandchildren, Dallas, Amy, Ogden,
Darcie and Stephanie, two great grandchildren and three step grandchildren, also two sisters Fern & Gladys, as well as neices & nephews.Dallas loved life and was an example to us in the way he lived and treated his family and many friends. He especially enjoyed meals with friends and family working wih the cattle and his observing wildlife, traveling and he never forgot to pick flowers for Alta, whom he most dearly loved. The family would especially like to thank Dr James Quinn and the many caregivers who eased the last four years of Dallas's life.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, wednesday, Aug 4, at Eldorado Church of Christ, 2000, Eldorado, with graveside services to follow at Morris Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Summers funeral homes, Boise Chapel. Visitation will be held this evening from 6pm to 8 pm at Summers Home, Boise Chapel.
