(Note submitted June 18, 2005 by Phil Rial: These are my maternal
grandparents and my young uncle.
They were killed in an automobile accident on Highway 1 South between
Lexa and Barton. I was born two
years after this accident, but I well remember my mother talking about
this. My mother and her other
siblings were in school in Rondo and thus were spared. Franklin Ross Payne was my
mother’s little brother and he had not yet started school. My mother’s little sister Betty
Sue Payne was in the car also and survived the accident, with major
injuries. She died some years later
from Parkinsons, and other complications presumably from the accident. I understand she had head injuries and
multiple broken bones.)
