Phillips Bayou Cemetery

(also may be known as Oberchain Church Cemetery)

Phillips Bayou, Arkansas

Location: Phillips Bayou Cemetery is on Lee Road 260.  It is on the north side of Lee 260 and west of Lee 239, near the St. Francis River (section 35).  You take the “low road” and turn west onto 260 where the Phillips Bayou (Hannon’s) store used to be.  The road to the cemetery is about a half mile, on the right (north).  This cemetery is on St. Francis National Forest lands.

Sue Foster submitted this list and several photos on October 6, 2005.  Click on the names below to see the photos.  This should be a complete listing, and this cemetery is also multi-racial.  Sue was able to dig up some census and marriage records on several of the names and it is included below as a note.

With the help of my sister, Cricket, and family friend, Celeste, we made a complete listing and took photographs of each stone that we could find on October 14th & 15th, 2005.  We found 4 additional stones (2 with only partial names on them) and 4 unreadable funeral home markers.  I think this may have been 2 separate graveyards because of the distance between the 2 groups of stones.  There were also 2 stones seemingly haphazardly thrown on the ground midway between the hills were the other 2 groups of stones were located.  There are stories of graves being moved from other locations due to flooding near the river.  There were also many obvious graves on the first hill to the right without markers.  If you know any additional history about this cemetery, please contact me.

If you know of anyone else buried here, and would like to add their name, please contact me.  I can also create a link for you to any of these names if you find someone that belongs to your family.  The information presented is as correct as possible, however you may want to verify its accurateness.

* Information taken from various cemetery books

** No Marker – information was submitted by person noted
