Lee County,
Arkansas Cemeteries
Cedar Heights
Cemetery
Marianna, Arkansas
Location: Take Hwy 1 to Marianna. Bear right onto Alabama Street. Go about 1.2 miles and turn right onto Chestnut Street. The courthouse is about ½ mile on
the left and the cemetery is right behind the courthouse.
In the 1960’s two Lee County
women took it upon themselves to go to the cemetery and write down all names
from the tombstones that were there at that time. This was in the days before computers. Their notes are in the Lee County Museum. In the 1980’s Bill Foreman
started a project of transcribing the cemetery and recorded his info on the
computer, and although not complete, gave a copy to the Chamber of
Commerce. In the late 1990’s
Verneal Montgomery took the printout with the goal of completing the
project. Suzy Keasler and Nancy
Apple assisted. Nancy went a step further and mapped the
cemetery complete with family names.
Due to discrepancies between some of the records, it was necessary to resurvey
some of the stones if they still existed.
In 2006 Jane Hartley took the previous work and prepared it for this
internet site. These records will
be a memorial dedicated to Jessamine Gist, Sr. (Mrs. Tom Gist) and Marynell
Latta Montgomery (Mrs. Jesse), the two original record keepers. If you have any further information about this
cemetery, please contact
me.
If
you know of anyone else buried here, and would like to add their name, please contact me. I can also create a link for you to any
of these names if you find someone that belongs to your family. The information presented is as correct
as possible, however you may want to verify its accurateness.
