I am looking for DUNAWAY of Hempstead County. They lived in and around Prescott, Ar. in
the early 1900. The parents were James Louis and Martha Alice. Both died in 1906. My father
George Dunaway was 13 years old at the time and assumed responsibility for the family. George
had a brother Jesse Walter who married Octavia MILAM and sisters Nettie, Ida, Edna and
Maude, these sisters all lived with him. The other sisters were married at the time. Nettie
committed suicide at Jesse home on 2/7/1913. An article about the suicide was found in the
Washington Telegraph. James Louis, Martha Alice, Nettie, and George are buried in the Merrell
cemetery near Belton, Ar. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Shirley

century. Thank you. Kathryn Sterling Herrmann, Hendersonville, NC

Robert B. GRAHAM is the first of my Grahams, he was born around 1824 in TN, was married to
Eliza McLELLAND in 1849 in Bossier Par., LA. In the Bossier 1850 census, James Thomas
McLelland b. 1838 in MS was living with them so I think he was Eliza's son. James F.
GILLESPIE, Joseph J. KNIGHT and Dany SELY signed the marriage bond of Robert and Eliza.
I think Eliza may have been a Gillespie. J.F. Graham was born in 1852 and the family moved to
Hunt Co., TX in 1853 and Samuel R. Graham was born that year. JFG married Mary "Mollie"
WILLIAMS in 1872 and my grandfather Brantley Gillespie Graham was born there in 1873,
another son Robert Edwin Graham was born there in Hunt Co., TX (his descendants live in
Gurdon, Clark Co., AR. The family moved to Hollywood, Clark Co., AR in the late 1870s. Also
listed Arkadelphia as his address when he went to med school at the forerunner of the U of A.
They moved to Malvern around 1890, lived there about 10 years. Brantley married Willie
Hargrove SMITH there and everyone moved to Hot Springs around 1900. JFG died in 1907 in
Hot Springs and I haven't been able to find his grave. In the obituary, it is stated that he was
buried in Cave Hill Cem. in Hope, AR however none of the cem. books list him. I know that he
would have had a tombstone as the funeral home book lists his funeral as costing about 7-8
thousand. His son Robert Edwin Graham was living in Hope at the time (he was a railroad man as
were all of the sons). Another son Dale Graham moved back to Malvern and is buried there.
Virgil Graham lived in Pine Bluff but think that he died in Hot Springs as the SSI death list shows
someone who could be him. My grandfather Brantley moved to Newport (NE AR) around 1900
and was a ticketagent for the train station. I think that my Grahams must have been related to
Grahams in Clark Co. and around that area, just have never found anything to connect them to
any other families. I sure hope you can connect with them. Also, because of the Gillespie name, I
have been trying to search the Middle Tennessee area of Sumner, Williamson, Maury, etc counties
as well as Rowan County, NC as there were Grahams and Gillespies who were related in those
areas.

Information on Abraham HARDIN who is in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Hempstead Co., Ar
census? This is not Abraham K. who was married to Betsy Wilson but another one. This one
was married to Arthura or Authusia or something similar. There are deed records in Hemp. Co.
in 1851, selling land there. By 1860, the family seems to have moved to Houston Co., TX. In
1850 Abraham states he was born in Ga and in 1870 that he was born in GA. In 1850, Authura
(spelling etc) was born in KY. Children: William, John, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha and
Emily. He was still living in Houston Co., Tx in 1870. In the household was M.J. (Martha),
Susan, J.H. and Arthesey. I think he had a brother, Edwin who was also in Hempstead Co. in
1830 and Sevier in 1840. His two daughters, Sylvania and Naphania married in Hemp. Co., Ar
in 1843 and then moved to Texas with their families and younger brother, Abraham. Edwin and
the older Abraham may have had a third brother, Jackson. Any information on this line would be
greatly appreciated. Mary Turney

I have a marriage license that says my great grandfather, Samuel Gordon BUTLER, was 40 years
old when he married Mary Elizabeth LAFFERTY on September 8, 1891 in Lively, Arkansas
(Hempstead County, near Spring Hill). He supposedly came into Spring Hill, married her,
fathered two children, Roy and Gordon, and then left a few years later. No one knows where he
came from or went to, but some say he moved to Texas and that he wrote regularly but that Mary
tore up the letters. One census record (1900, I think) shows AL as the birthplace of Roy and
Gordon's father. Thanks. David Butler

George Washington Brown SANDERS said that he was born in Hempstead County, Arkansas,
town of Washington. Here is the story that we have heard from his son, Romulus. "Grandma
Sanders (Magdalene) was living in Arkansas (Hempstead County) and was a widow with 4 sons
when she met and married a man named Edgar HARRELLS. They had a daughter, Ann Eliza, and
after trouble broke aut between Edgar and Magdalene, Magdalene waited until her husband went
off some place, then she took a team of nules and a wagon for her plunder, put the 4 boys and her
six week old daughter in the wagon and lit out for Stewart County, Tennessee, where she had two
brothers living. After she arrived there, she hid out in the woods by day, and went into the house
at night always fearing taht her husband would hunt her down and kill her." George Washington
Brown Sanders was born in 1839, so this would have happened after 1840. We cannot find any
evidence of a marriage. We have not yet gotten access to a Hempstead County 1840 census.
Does anyone have any information at all about Magdalene's first husband (SANDERS), or her
maiden name? Roger and Judy Lehman, rdljpl@earthlink.net

father's family moved from MN to AR in 1925 and moved back in 1930. They lived on a farm
near Hope, "just outside Boughten" (sp?). My grandmother Rena Richardson Bogart, b. 1877,
died there in 1926. If anyone has any idea of were a record of her death and burial could be
found, I would be grateful to hear from you. Ed Bogart, bogart@exis.net
