TRACK
THIS YEAR'S TRACK SEASON OPENED ON MARCH 28TH WITH AN INTER-CLASS MEET AMONG THE SEVENTH,
EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADES. AFTER THE DUST HAD SETTLED, THE SEVENTH GRADE BOYS WERE SEEN
SITTING ON A THRONE WITH THE INSCRIPTION, "JUNIOR CLASS CHAMPIONS" JUST TWO
INCHES ABOVE THEIR UP-TURNED NOSES. THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY, THINGS REALLY BECAME WARM. ON THIS DAY THE SOPHOMORE, JUNIOR, AND SENIOR CLASSES MET TO DO BATTLE FOR THE SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. NO DUST WAS RAISED THAT DAY (IT HAD RAINED JUST THE DAY BEFORE!), BUT HIDE, HAIR, AND RAW PIECES OF HUMAN FLESH WERE SCATTERED OVER THE CAMPUS BY NIGHTFALL. THE NEXT DAY AN INQUIRING AND SOMEWHAT PUZZLED VISITOR WANTED TO KNOW IF THERE HAD BEEN AN EPIDEMIC OF STIFF NECKS AMONG THE OLDER STUDENTS. AT THAT VERY SECOND, SOMETHING PASSED MAJESTICALLY THROUGH THE HALL WITH ITS HEAD SO HIGH AND STIFF THAT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TELL WHETHER IT WAS A MAN OR A GIRAFFE. HOWEVER, AS IT LOWERED ITS CRANIUM TO PASS THROUGH A DOOR, IT TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THE JUNIOR BOYS WHO THE DAY BEFORE HAD WON OVER "THOSE UPSTARTS, THE SOPHOMORES (WISE FOOLS TOYOU!) AND THEM THAR UPPITY SENIORS". HOWEVER, THE FOLLOWING FRIDAY, AFTER A SERIOUS LECTURE BY MISS SHEARER ON PATRICK HENRY'S IMMORTAL "UNITED WE FALL AND DIVIDED WE STANT" (OR VICE-VERSA), THE STILL-BLEEDING WOUNDS AND THROBBING BRUISES WERE FORGOTTEN, AND ALL JOINED FORCES AGAINST A COMMON ENEMY, LAFE. THAT DAY, THE CIVIL WAR WAS REFOUGHT, AND THE YANKEES FROM THE NORTH BARELY ESCAPED WITH THEIR LIVES. ALL THE SMLODERING FURY AND ANGUISH OF HEART CAUSED BY EARLIER BASKETBALL AND BASEBALL GAMES LOST TO THE PESKY INVADERS WERE LOOSED UPON THE UNSUSPECTING VICTIMS. THEY WERE LAST SEEN IN UTTER CONFUSION, SILHOUETTED AGAINST THE SINKING SUN, RETREATING HASTILY IN THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF LAFE, DRAGGING THEIR DEAD AND WOUNDED BEHIND THEM. ON APRIL 11, LAKESIDE WAS HOST TO THE GREENE COUNTY TRACK MEET IN WHICH MARMADUKE, LAFE (THE GOVERNMENT GAVE THEM PERMISSION TO GET THEIR YEAR'S TRAINING IN TWO EASY LESSONS AGAINST THE BRAVES!) OAK GROVE AND LAKESIDE MET UNTIL DEATH DID THEM PART. AFTER THE WAR MARMADUKE DICTATED THE PEACE TERMS (NO MORE BATTLES UNTIL SUMMER) COLLECTED MOST OF THE MEDALS AND LEFT THE FIELD FOLLOWED BY OAK GROVE, LAKESIDE AND LAFE IN THAT ORDER. |
