Wallace Cleatus Gramling



Wallace Cleatus Gramling, 74 of Paragould, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at St Bernard’s Medical Center in Jonesboro.

He was born November 15, 1935 to the late William Clyde and Cora A. Adams Gramling. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Adams, brothers, William J. and Walter Lee Gramling.

He loved to sing, going to and being active at First Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his three sisters, Wanda Clifton of Beech Grove, Barbara Rawls and Janiece Cox of Paragould and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home tonight. His life will be celebrated at Heath Colonial Chapel Friday, September 3rd, 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Paul Bean and Reverend Rayburn Forman officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Cemetery. Nephews will be pallbearers and the men of First Freewill Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.

Clara Bell Renfrow



Clara Bell Renfrow, daughter of the late Vilas F. and Iva Summers Taylor, was born February 21, 1911, in Kosuesko, MS., and passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at the Belle Meade Nursing Center in Paragould, AR., at the age of 99 years.
She married Jeff Renfrow April 27, 1929, in Winona, MS. He preceded her in death March 25, 1983. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rita Slochowsky; a son, V.W. Renfrow; a grandson, Jeffrey Short; two daughters-in-law, Janie Renfrow and Billie June Renfrow; a son-in-law, Sonny Short; four brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Renfrow was a member of the Arbyrd First Baptist Church and VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include four sons, Gene Renfrow and James William Renfrow, both of Arbyrd, Mo., Gerald Renfrow and wife, Joyce, of Peru, Ind., and Gary Renfrow and wife, Barbara, of Paragould; four daughters, Peggy Short, of Arbyrd, Carolyn Forbs and husband, Lester, of Paragould, Sue McNeil and husband, Kenny, of Laquey, Mo., and Dana McCoy and husband, David, of Leachville, Ark.; 76 grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 4th, noon until 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Arbyrd.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., following visitation at the church with Gary Renfrow and Ricky Rose officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lulu Cemetery near Senath, MO.

Pallbearers are Brent Renfrow, Kevin Estes, Jon McNeil, Richard Slochowsky, David Slochowsky, Travis Renfrow, Kenny Forbs and Kendall Estes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Paragould Children's Home.

Derek Blake Lucy
 


Mr. Derek Blake Lucy, 20, of Corning, AR., passed away Thursday, September 2, 2010 in Grove Town, GA. Mr. Lucy was born September 12, 1989 in Paragould, AR. he was a member of the Army National Guard.

He is survived by his father Lindell Lucy Sr. and wife Tami of Knob, AR.; his mother Elizabeth Lucy of Corning, AR.; two brothers Lindell Lucy Jr. of Shanghai, China, Cody Lynn Lucy of Knob, AR.; two sisters Christina Lucy of Corning, AR., Chrystal Lucy of Corning, AR.; and maternal grandparents Gene and Shirley Phelan of Corning, AR.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Doyne and Myrtle Lucy.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 7th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mark Trout officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Rock Springs Cemetery at Knob, AR. Visitation will be held Monday evening, September 6th, 6:00 until 8:00 in the Corning High School Gymnasium

Debra Jean Gray



Debra Jean Gray, 57, of Paragould lost her battle with lung cancer, Friday, September 3, 2010. Debbie was born June 21st, 1953 to the late Evelyn and Howard Gray.
Debbie loved her family, all animals, cooking, and fishing. She is survived by her sister Betty Lou (Gray) Robertson of Washington, her children Clarissa Gilliam-Cooley and Jennifer Gilliam- Cooley of Paragould with her grandchildren Kordova Winberry, Mitchel and Curtis Cooley and Zachary and Jessica Holland of Lafe.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 11th, 2:00 p.m. at Linwood Cemetery in Paragould, with John Horton officiating.

Mr. Arthur Parvin Stuart

 

Mr. Arthur Parvin Stuart, a resident of Conway, Arkansas, departed this life Sunday, September 5, 2010, at the Conway Regional Medical Center, at the age of eighty-eight. He was born, September 9, 1921, in Paragould, Arkansas, the son of Arthur Parvin and Dora (Chambers) Stuart. He married Miss Christeen Tutor, November 6, 1965.
Mr. Stuart was member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Conway, Arkansas and was a Mason, joining in 1953 and becoming Master Mason in 1954. He was an Operating Engineer for the Local 150 Trade Union, from September 1, 1945 until his retirement on December 30, 1976. Arthur enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Eutha Mae Stuart and Evelyn Stuart.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 45 years: Christeen Stuart of the home, one daughter: Lola Jean Navarro of Portland, Oregon, two step-sons: Jay Marcum of Littleton, Colorado, Ron Marcum of Chicago Heights, Illinois, one brother: Galen Stuart of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, two sisters: Kathleen Hester of Paragould, Arkansas , Reba Chamberlain of Fresno, California, 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted, Friday, September 10th, 1:00 p.m. at the Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home in Wynne, Arkansas. Interment will follow at Cogbill Cemetery, also in Wynne.
A memorial service will be held, Sunday, September 12th, 1:00 p.m. at the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 4755 Prince Street, Conway, Arkansas.

Wanda Mae Barnett
 


Mrs. Wanda Mae Barnett, 84, of Paragould, AR., passed away Monday, September 6, 2010 at home. Mrs. Barnett was born May 3, 1926 at Datto, AR., she was a C.N.A. for 18 years at the Corning Nursing Home. She enjoyed word search, taking care of her family and her dog Brody. She was a member of the Knobel Church of Christ and Newton Street Church of Christ.

She married her husband Leroy Isaac Barnett, Jr. on December 30, 1943 he preceded her in death on June 1, 2008.

She is survived by two sons Larry Barnett of Jonesboro, AR., Robert Barnett and wife Cindy of Paragould, AR.; two daughters Linda Fraine of Paragould, AR., Cathy and husband Stan Carmack of Paragould, AR.; one brother Joe Arnold of Bowling Green, KY; two sisters Pauline Hanner of Poplar Bluff, MO., Lucille Archer of Paragould, AR.; five grandchildren Shawn Barnett, Anthony Childress, Kerry Barnett, Jonathan Carmack, Jordan Carmack; eight great-grandchildren John Mark Pruitt, Abby Pruitt, Alec Childress, Preston Barnett, Taylor Barnett, Garrett Barnett, Brock Barnett, and Alexander Barnett.

She was preceded in death by husband Leroy Barnett, Jr.; parents William and Lula (Tinkler) Arnold; two brothers Jack Arnold, Don Arnold; and one sister Kay Jarrett.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 9th, at 2:00 p.m. in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel with Rick Holden and Joe Arnold officiating. Burial will follow the service in Bond Cemetery in Knobel, AR. Public visitation will be Wednesday evening, September 7th, 6:00 until 8:00.

Elizabeth Christene (Barton) Branch, of Paragould passed away in North Little Rock September 7, 2010, at the age 80. Christene was a life long member of First Baptist Church, Paragould.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J. (Bud) Branch, her parents, her brother, and her sister.
She is survived by a son Wm. A. (Andy) Branch II and his wife, Ann, of Monett, Missouri, a daughter, Kim Smith and her husband, Jerry of North Little Rock, Arkansas and a daughter, Lynn Holzhauer and her husband, Jody of Gillett, Arkansas, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, September 9th, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home.

Danny Bass
 


Danny Joe Bass, 58, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at his home.

He was born September 9, 1951, at Fontaine, Arkansas to John and Lena Bass, also of Fontaine. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a radio man first class in the Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Teri Bass of Broken Arrow; son, Eric Bass of Tulsa, two granddaughters, Eden, 7 and Kennedy, 3; five brothers, Gary Bass of Ohio, Richard Andrew Bass and Wayne Bass, both of Paragould, Donald Ray Bass and Rondal Lynn Bass, both of Marengo, Ill.; two sisters, Bonnie Fielder and Sandra Lingle, both of Illinois.

Memorial services will be Saturday, September 18th, 2:00 p.m. at Lorado Baptist Church.

James Donald Fears
 



James Donald Fears, 84 of Paragould passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. Donald was a retired farmer and a member of the Walcott Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Selma Harris Fears; brother, Earl Fears; sisters, Bonnie Cannon and Ruth Lee.
Survivors include his wife, Elfreda Fears of the home; daughters, Cathy Reeves of Meridian, MS. and Donna Archer of Paragould; sons, Ronnie Fears of Stanford and Jerry Dale Fears of Covington, GA; sister, Sue Smith of Paragould, and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday evening 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Friday, September 10th, 2:00 p.m. at Heath Colonial Chapel with Art Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.

Bessie Inez Reagan
 


Bessie Inez Reagan, 97, of Paragould passed from this life on Thursday September 9, 2010 at Greene Acres Nursing Center. She was born August 11, 1913 in Cherry Valley to James and Luna Harrison Williams.

Bess spent the early part of her married life in Michigan and then returned to Arkansas. She was a special volunteer for the Senior BEES for many years as a beautician in the Mini Rise Beauty Shop. Bess also worked in the courtyards at the Mini Rise planting beautiful roses and other flowering plants. All of the residents enjoy the beautiful courtyards today because of her work and love for plants and people. She was a member of the 7th and Mueller Church of Christ.

Bess was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Reagan; her parents; five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, and special friends Jim and Norma Bowlin.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 11th, 11:30 a.m. until1:00 p.m. at the 7th and Mueller Church of Christ in Paragould.

Services will begin at 1:00 pm at the church with Art Smith officiating under the direction of Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Barbara Bernice Todd




Barbara Bernice Todd, 72, of Paragould, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010, at her home. She was born May 21, 1938, in Paragould, to Ora and Bessie Gunn. Mrs. Todd was a former factory worker and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, Keith Todd and Roger Todd, both of Paragould; one daughter, Valerie Roberts of Jonesboro; two brothers, Oscar Gunn of Rector and Logan Gunn of Paragould; one sister, Mary Henson of California; seven grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Monday, September 13th, 2:00 p.m., at Finch Cemetery with Wilburn Griggs officiating. Visitation will be Monday, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:20 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould. The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 1:25 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Gunn, Ricky Gunn, Jeremy Gunn, Jason Goben, Larry Conady, and Richard Wright.

Roy Lee Bryan, 73, of Paragould, passed away Friday, September 10, 2010 at his home. He was born October 2, 1936 in Lepanto, Arkansas the son of the late Cliff and Kate Baker Bryan. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Paul J., R.J., and Jackie Wayne Bryan. He was a United States Army Veteran and a carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Bryan, of the home; daughter: Kathy Bryan; son, Roy Douglas Bryan, both of Paragould; sisters: Annabelle Arms of Walnut Ridge, Lavonda Teeter of Osceola, Mary Ann Chaney of Lepanto; grandsons, Sawyer and Tucker.

Emogene Alexander, 72 passed away September 10, 2010 at the Monette Manor. She was born September 1, 1938 to the late Virgil and Dovie (Davidson) Evans in Manila, Arkansas.

Sheila Kay Harmon, 48 of Jonesboro passed away September 11, 2010 at the St. Bernard's Hospital. She was born November 20, 1961 to James and Mary (Dunham) Hargrove.

Preceding her in death was her father, James E Hargrove.

Surviving Sheila is her son and his companion: Brandon Harmon and Norah McGuire of Truman, her mother: Mary Dunham of Paragould her fiancé, Bobby Greene and two brothers, James Hargrove of Marmaduke and Freman Hargrove of Paragould.

Graveside services will be Tuesday, September 14th, 3:00 p.m. at Harvey's Chapel Cemetery with Brother Russell Shewmaker officiating.

Ray Johnston
 



Ray Johnston, 66, of Goobertown, Arkansas passed away September 11, 2010 at John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital in Little Rock. He was born on October 8, 1943 in Goobertown. After graduating Brookland High School, he left to serve his country in the United States Army in Viet Nam. Upon completion of his service he became an over the road truck driver for the last forty years earning numerous safe driving awards.

He was a loving husband and father, always putting others ahead of himself. He is preceded in death by his father; George S. Johnston and one son Lanny Ray Grissom of Conway, Arkansas.

He is survived by; his wife Carolyn Johnston of the home, his mother; Sylvia Wheeler of Mt Ida, Arkansas, one daughter and son-in-law; Tonya and Cale Summers of St. Charles, Missouri, one son and daughter-in-law; Brian and Angie Lang of Statesboro, Georgia, two sisters and brothers-in-law; Donna and Jim Walker of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Shirley Ann and Pete Davidson of Mt. Ida, one grandson; Matthew Grissom and one grand daughter; Bailey Grissom both of Conway.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 14th, 1:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Lee officiating, with burial following in Clark’s Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday evening 6:00 until 8:00 at the Mitchell Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be classmates and friends; Roy Davenport, Donny Foster, Bud Dooley, Robert Cooper, Charles Weathers and Bill McGee.

Ellen Joyce Boyd Dunavin
 


Ellen Joyce Boyd Dunavin, 70, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Southlake Methodist Hospital in Merrillville, IN.

She was born September 8, 1940 in Bard in Greene Co., AR. to the late Ernest and Magdalene Miles Boyd. Joyce attended school in Paragould. She lived in Northwest Indiana area for the last 30 years formerly of Monette and Paragould.

Mrs. Dunavin loved reading, enjoyed puzzles, needlepoint, crochet, secret recipes, writing to pen-pals and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church of Monette.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Jeff W. Dunavin of Lake Village, IN; two sons, Mark Dunavin of Paragould and William Dunavin; four granddaughters, KaSandra (Tom) Haynes of Gainesville, FL, Keisha Dunavin of Paragould, Ashley Dunavin and Hannah Dunavin of Shepherdsville, KY; two sisters, Edra Lois Kucker of Davison, MI and Edna Louise Nelson of Crown Point, IN; a step-brother, Ed Wilkinson of Delaplaine and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces and friends.

She is also preceded in death by a son Timothy Wayne Dunavin.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Gregg Funeral Home Chapel in Monette with Rev. Arthur Phelps officiating.

Family and friends will gather from 1:00 until time of service at the Gregg Funeral Home in Monette.

Albert Jerry Hood

 



Albert Jerry “Papa Smurf” Hood, 66, of Bono, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Longterm Advance Care Hospital of Searcy.

Born September 17, 1943, in Joiner, Mr. Hood was a retired truck driver and of Christian faith. He was a Shriner and a member of the Sons of Bono Motorcycle Riding Club.

Survivors include his wife, Kristine Hood of Bono; two sons, Arty Hood of Paragould, and Jimmy Lee Hood of Bono; four daughters, Jeanette Wagner of Milner, Georgia, Jeri Baldwin of Paragould, Crystal Hood of Jonesboro, and Amanda Hood of Bono. He is also survived by two brothers, Don Hood of Jonesboro, and Edgar Hood of Paragould; two sisters, Sarah Wilson of Paragould, and Lavelle Reed of McDonough, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Shane Ishmael, Jade Wagner, Morgan Cannon, John Allen Cannon, Ashlyn Baldwin, Destiny Baldwin, and Zander “Rooster” Hood; and by one great grandson, Titus Ishmael.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Edgar and Willie Mae Hood; two brothers, and one sister.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening, 5:00 until 9:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 16th, 1:30 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery.

Cleo Almond Stayton, 68, of Walnut Ridge, passed away September 16, 2010, at his home.

Born February 5, 1942, at Light, he was the owner and operator of Stayton Machine Works in Walnut Ridge. He was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Juanita Brown Stayton; a brother; two sisters; and a granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Fry Stayton, whom he married June 15, 1965; two sons, Marty Fry and wife Sandy, Tuckerman, and Scott Stayton and wife Vickie, Damascus; two daughters, Paula Ginnett, Springdale, and Elizabeth Carpenter and husband Chad, Mt. Morris, Ill.; four brothers, Bill Stayton, Walnut Ridge, Jim Stayton and Tom Stayton, both of Gentry, and Eddie Stayton, Rogers; five sisters, Mary Langston, Gentry, Geraldine Gatewood, Lauratown, Dora Martin, Sulphur Springs, Carol Hankins, Siloam Springs, and Wanda Deacons, Prior, Okla.; and 11 grandchildren, Marcus Fry, Kenton Fry, Candice Stayton, Robert Riedell, Jeremy Riedell, Madison Stevens, Noah Stevens, Audra Carpenter, Chelsea Carpenter, Shane Odom and Sharon Reed.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 18th, 2:00 p.m. at Bryan Funeral Home with Rev. James Warbington officiating. Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery near Walcott.

Janie Ruth Sutton
 


Janie Ruth Sutton, 90, of Paragould, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010 at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born November 10, 1919 in Marmaduke, to Joe and Callie Smith, she retired from the Federal Reserve Bank, North Little Rock, as a legal secretary. Mrs. Sutton was a member of 7th & Mueller Church of Christ.

She is survived by a niece, Jo Nell Trettin of California; a cousin, Laura Jackson of Paragould; and by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Sutton; her parents; and two brothers.

Patsy Sue Thompson, 29, Ravenden, AR, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010 in Ravenden Springs. Born September 24, 1980, Patsy was a homemaker and member of Ravenden Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dover and Roslyn Lee Douglas.

Survivors include her children: Charlie Smith, Brandon Thompson and Stormy Thompson, stepmother, Rosetta Douglas, sisters and brother-in-law: Sherry and Kenneth Oden, Sr., and Pamela Douglas and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 25th, 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at Heath Funeral Home with service following at 10:30 with Reverend Pat Hovis officiating. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery.

Charles Jerry Hill
 


Mr. Charles Jerry Hill, 70, of Union, MO., passed away Saturday, September 18, 2010 at St. Clair Nursing Center in St. Clair, MO. Mr. Hill was born May 18, 1940 in Delaplaine, AR., he worked for General Motors for over 34 years. He was a Masonic Lodge Past Master at the Tyro Masonic Lodge in Caladonia, MO., the oldest active Masonic Lodge west of the Mississippi River. He enjoyed fishing, Cardinals baseball, coin collecting and bowling. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Union, MO.

He married his wife Mrs. Georgia E. (Barksdale) Hill on August 5, 1961. She survives. Other survivors include two sons Jerry Dale Hill and wife Holly of Nashville, TN., John Mark Hill and wife Laurie of Pekin, IL.; two brothers Danny and Rick Hill both of Corning, AR.; two sisters Rita Stormes of Corning, AR., Janie Neal of Wentzville, MO.; four grandchildren Parker, Logan, Austin, and Shayla Hill.

He was preceded in death by parents Woodrow and Lenora “Shorty” (Stevens) Hill.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 23rd, 11:00 a.m. at the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel with Hugh McNary and Denny Stormes officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Jones Ridge Cemetery at Delaplaine, AR.
Visitation will be prior to services Thursday, 9:00 until 11:00 a.m.

Kay Francis Louise Creel, 73 of Light, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 19, 2010 at St. Bernard’s Medical Center. She was born September 20, 1936, in Light, AR. Kay was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence & Ruth Dulaney and brother, J. C. Dulaney.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Marcus Creel of the home; son, Murl Creel of Light; daughters, Lana Creel of Light and Jean Creel of Paragould; granddaughters and grandson-in-law, Jessica and Adam Taylor of Stanford and Melanie Creel of Light; great grandsons Jaxon Gramling of Light and Landon Taylor of Stanford; sisters and brothers-in-law, Goldie and Gary Wise of Paragould, Shirley and Glen Maple of Light, Wanda and Fred Allmandinger of Corning; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Kay Dulaney of Powhattan, many other family and friends.

Mr. Cecil Anthony Shelton, II, age 47 of Paragould, formerly of Manila, passed away September 19, 2010at his home. Born at Lepanto he was the son of the late Cecil and Agnes Russell Shelton and was a 1982 graduate of Manila High School. He had lived much of his life in the Trumann area and was an auto mechanic. He had worked at Abernathy Motor Company, Wood Ford in Trumann and Howard Ford in West Memphis. He had been a Paragould resident for the past 3 years and enjoyed hunting and fishing and driving the # 17 race car at area dirt tracks.

Survivors include two sons, Cecil “C. J.” Shelton and Joshua Williams, both of Trumann; one daughter, Sarah Shelton of Flint, Mich.; one brother, Thomas Shelton of Jonesboro; his twin sister, Susie Petty Dunlap of Manila; a special sister-in-law, Brenda Shelton of Jonesboro; and his ex-wife, Rene Shelton of Trumann.


Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 22nd, 2:00 pm at the Howard Funeral Service Chapel in Manila with Rev. Kenneth Guy McMahan officiating. Burial will follow in Caraway Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening 6:00 until 8:00 at the funeral home.

Nancy “Rose” Bennett, 63, of Hoxie, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at her residence.

Alfred M. Hagen, 88 of Paragould passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. He was born September 9, 1922, in Engleberg, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Monroe and Josephine Weisenbach Hagen and brother and sister-in-law Edward & Edie Hagen.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Fairrie Hagen of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Laura Hagen of Paragould; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald & Vaudine Hagen of Gassville, AR and Lawrence and Sadie Hagen of Port St. Lucie, Fl. Grandchildren, Shawn & Chandra Hagen of Silver Spring, MD; great grandson, August Hagen of Silver Spring, MD, several nieces and nephews Mr. Hagen served in the Navy Armed Guard in WWII as a gunner's mate on supply ships. Al retired from Paragould Light and Water on September 9, 1984, after almost 40 years as Chief Engineer and Superintendant of the Downtown Paragould power plant. He was an avid duck hunter and antique car buff. He also enjoyed "harvesting" his apple, peach, pear, and nectarine trees in his spare time.
Rosary will be Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Heath Funeral Home. Visitation will follow the Rosary 7:00- until 8:30. Funeral mass will be Friday morning, September 24th, at 10:00 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Mike Sinkler officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bob Pepper, Larry and Avery Beliew, Keith Legrid, Mark Martin, Tim Simpson.

He was preceded in death by his wife Winona Smitherman, parents, Edwin and Bessie Smitherman and 3 sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Davis; son, Wesley Davis, great granddaughter, Karissa Scott and parents, John and Velora Vines Clifton.

Bonnie Jean Risner, 71 of Paragould, formerly of Piggott passed away September 24, 2010 at her home. She was born October 8, 1938 to the late John and Willie Randall in Piggott. She was the owner of BJ’s Food Mart in Piggott and Rector.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and one sister: Helen Randle.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-five years: Fuesal Risner, two sons: Cleatis Risner and Rick Risner, a daughter: Janet Jones all of whom are from Paragould, twelve grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday, September 27th, 2:00 p.m. at the Irby Funeral Home in Piggott with Brother Terry Gage officiating. Interment will be at the Piggott Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening at 6:00 at the funeral home.

Survivors include one son, Jay Emerson and Orland Coburn, one daughter, Stephanie Griffey and husband, Mark of Bay; four brothers, Lloyd Adams, Jr. and wife Janie, Donnie Adams and wife, Mary, both of Bay, Terry Adams and wife Roma of Jonesboro, Wesley Adams and wife Zelda of Sedgwick, and David Adams and wife Vickie of Tuckerman; and two sisters, Mary Whitlock and husband, William of Bay, and Janet Kain and husband, Ralph of Harrisburg; and a brother-in-law, David Hartsell of Tuckerman; and two grandhildren, Dylan and Shane Griffey.

Mrs. Simpson was born April 10, 1923, in Lawrence County, and retired from Emerson Electric. She was a member of Oak Grove Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, J. C. and Loretta Simpson of Oak Grove Heights; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Autry of Oak Grove Heights, and Martha and Lynn Exum of Paragould. She is also survived by one brother, Nolan Ussery of Paragould; two sisters-in-law, Florene Ussery of Rochelle, Illinois, and Betty Ussery of Jacksonville, Arkansas; 10 grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; and thirteen great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 29th, 1:30 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, Paragould, with David Stallings and Billy Joe Dowdy officiating. Burial will follow in New Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Veda B. Underwood, 91, Paragould, passed away Monday, September 27, 2010 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was a retired pastor and member of Woodlands Hills Church of the Nazarene. Mrs. Underwood was born February 20, 1919.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Underwood, parents, Edgar and Viola McDonald, and two brothers.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law: Teresa Kay and Delbert Oden of Paragould; sons and daughters-in-law: Rudi and Sara Underwood of Paragould, Nickey and Amy Underwood of Conway; sisters: Freda Smith of Paragould and Zelda King of Conway; special niece, Rhea Bolin of Paragould; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Henry Jim Hudson
 


Henry Jim Hudson, 90, of Paragould, passed away Monday, September 27, 2010, at Lakeside Nursing Center, Lake City.

He was born October 23, 1919, in Decatur County, Tennessee, and retired from L. A. Darling. Mr. Hudson was a World War II Army veteran as part of the 89th Infantry Division. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of two Bronze Stars and other decorations. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy David and Janie Hudson of Paragould, Steve Hudson of Gainesville, Rick and Melanie Hudson of Van Buren, and Randy and Anna Hudson of Cabot. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Jeff, Josh, Emma and Tyler Hudson and Megan Hudson O’Neal; and three great grandchildren, Jordan and Jadan Hudson and Ruby O’Neal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Florence Hudson; one son, Tony Lee Hudson; and one sister, Bertha Butler.

Visitation will be Thursday morning, 9:30 until 10:30 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Graveside services will be Thursday, September 30th, at 11:00 a.m. at New Friendship Cemetery with Dennis Scudder officiating. The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m.

Edith V. (Mitchell) Ball



Edith V. (Mitchell) Ball, 97 years and 11 months departed her earthly home Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Edith was the wife of the beloved David L. Ball, mother of Troy S. (Mattie) Mitchell and James T. (Cheryl) Ball. Grandmother of six, great-grandmother of seven and great-great grandmother of four. Special aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.

Edith was born November 4, 1912 in Evening Shade, Arkansas and lived near this area until moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1950. Returning to Paragould, Arkansas in 1962. Edith and David owned and operated Ball’s Grocery on Hwy 141 until retiring in 1978. She loved to sew and quilt, and made quilts for loved ones until she was into her 90’s. Edith was a member of Herndon Church of Christ.

Visitation will be Saturday, October 2nd, 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Roller-Farmers Union Funeral Home. Services will follow the visitation Bro. Victor Spencer will officiate. Interment will be Sunday, October 3rd, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Sidney, Arkansas.

Imogene King, 89, of Rector passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. She was born on February 15, 1921 in Knob, Arkansas, to James Nathan and Arnie Leona Ladyman.

Mrs. King was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Rector.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom King; and several cousins.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn Louise and Steve Smith of Doniphan, Missouri; a brother, George Henry Ladyman and wife, Kay, of Poplar Bluff; and two grandchildren, Candace Lee Walters of Georgia, and Angela Nicole O’Connor and husband, Tim, of Tennessee. She is also survived by one great grandchild, Ireland O’Connor of Tennessee; a niece, Linda Lyles Brown and husband, Mike of Texas; and a nephew, Alan Lyles of Longview, Texas.

Dewey Vernon Boyd, 81, of Paragould, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born June 25, 1929, in Paragould, Mr. Boyd was a retired farmer and an Army veteran. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Donie Howe of Marmaduke, and Donna and Scott Roach of Paragould; three brothers, Hershel Boyd of Crown Point, Indiana, Walter Boyd of St. Peters, Missouri, and Joe Boyd of Wilderness, Missouri; and three sisters, Wilma Fowler of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Marie Vaughn and Stella Boyd, both of Paragould.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren, DaRae and Ronnie Roberts, Timothy Boyd, Randy Roach, Sandy Roach and Wendy and CJ Dunigan; and two great grandchildren, Keirstan Sharpe and Shawn Boyd.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Whit and Grace Boyd; his wife, Neba Boyd; one son, Dewey Boyd; and one sister, Liz McGinnis.

Mrs. Shaver was born November 18, 1930, in Stanford, and retired from Emerson Electric. She was a member of Stanford Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Shaver, Jr. of Beech Grove; one son and daughter-in-law, James Steven and Kim Shaver; one brother, Bud Gregory; and one sister, Geneva Martin, all of Paragould. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Heather Marie Shaver of Paragould and James Michael Shaver of Jonesboro.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Mary Gregory; and three brothers, Wally, Ken and Leland Gregory.

Connie Ethurn Clark, 90, of Paragould, passed away Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

Mr. Clark was born January 8, 1920, in Paragould. He retired from Emerson Electric and Coldstream Fisheries, and was a member of Greater Visions Ministries.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Charles Covington of Paragould; one brother, Bloyce Clark of Paragould; three grandchildren, Angie Smith, Christie Emery and Brandon Imler. He is also survived by five great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Essie Clark; his wife, Otilla E. Clark; three brothers, Leon, Thurman and Austin Clark; and five sisters, Thelma Zumwalt, Bonnie Ross, Bernice Farley, Ardith Johnston, and Opal Wood.

Visitation will be Sunday evening 6:00 until 9:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 4th, 10:30 a.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Rick Ethridge and Bill Bass officiating. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery.

Bernita Barrow




Ms. Bernita Barrow, long time Greene County resident and educator, passed away in her sleep in the early morning hours of Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the Rainbow Rehabilitation Facility in Bartlett, TN.

Ms. Barrow was born November 1, 1910 in Greene County, AR, the daughter of the late Monte and Kate Elizabeth Barrow.

She was preceded in death by her brother Mancefield Barrow, also formerly of Paragould, and stepbrother Charles Northen.

One month shy of her 100th birthday, Ms. Barrow is survived by her half-brother M. Joe Barrow of Memphis and his wife Patsy, with whom she lived the last 3 years of her life - sharing the family home surrounded by nieces, nephews, and their children. While Ms. Barrow's family extends into central Tennessee and throughout the Southeast U.S, many hundreds, if not thousands, of former students who passed under her tutelage as a teacher and administrator in the Greene County School District for 37 years, survive her.

After serving dutifully in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in the years leading up to WWII, Ms. Barrow became a full-time teacher in Greene County in 1936, retiring in 1973 as the Principal of both East Elementary and South Elementary of the Greene County Tech district.
She loved children, and as such, the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN, or the Madonna Learning Center in Memphis, TN, a teaching facility for special needs children, of which her nephew Ryan is a graduate.

Services will be Sunday, October 3rd, 2:30 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, Paragould, with Bill Steeger officiating. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until service time at Mitchell Funeral Home.
