Ralph Herman Haizlip
Ralph Herman Haizlip, 100, of Paragould died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005 at Arkansas Methodist
Medical Center in Paragould.
Born at Reydel, he was a retired school administrator. He was the first secretary of the
Community Methodist Hospital board of directors, serving from 1949-63. He was re-elected
for a 2-year term in 1980. He served as chairman, secretary and interim administrator.
He was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club; the Kiwanis scholarship was named
in his honor in 1963. He was a lifetime member of the Razorback Letterman's Club.
A member of the Arkansas Athletic Association and the high school coaches association, he
served as president of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association from 1982-83.
He was a member of the Arkansas State Board of Education and received the lifetime
certificate for 43 years of service in public schools, retiring in July 1973.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Arkansas Methodist Medical Center Foundation
and the Greene County Scholarship Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia Owen Haizlip; a son, Steve Haizlip of Paragould; three
daughters, Susan Glenn of Lakeland and Christy Blackshear and Beth Haizlip, both of
Paragould; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. N.A. and Ida Gocio Haizlip; and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Heath Colonial Chapel, with the
Rev. Paul Brown officiating. Burial will be private.

the Greene County Scholarship Foundation.
Katherine Orlene Cray
Katherine Orlene Cray, 87, of Paragould died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005 at Greene Acres
Nursing Home.
Born at Delaplaine, she was a homemaker and of the Baptist belief.
Survivors include two sons, Fred B. Cray of Alturas, Calif. and Eddie G. Cray of
Paragould; eight daughters, Mary Ester Davenport and Orlene Johnson, both of Stayton,
Ore., Lira Jeroline McKinney of Milwaukie, Ore., Carolyn Imogene Tester of Corvallis,
Ore., and Amie Ophelia Hicks, Mavis Exum, Veda Richardson and Susan Hurt, all of
Paragould; a brother, Edwin Compton; three sisters, Pauline Hilker, Zola Medal and Mina
Compton, all of Columbus, Ga.; 23 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerold Cray; a son, Charles Nelson Cray; her
parents, Robert and Ester Compton; and three brothers.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery,
with Art Smith officiating. The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould
at 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Hicks, Kason Hurt, Kerwin Hurt, Jamie Exum, Matthew Richardson
and Kiley Hurt.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mario Glenn Pankey
Mario Pankey of Marmaduke, Arkansas was born August 27, 1971. He departed this life on
September 2, 2005 at the age of 34 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Tony Pankey, Pat Greenway and stepfather Donnie
Greenway.
Mario is survived by one daughter, Laura Marie Pankey of Paragould, one sister, Maria
Vowell of Marmaduke, three brothers: Michael Dickinson of Mounds, Patrick Dickinson of
Marmaduke and Trent Dorris of Paragould, a half brother, Anthony Pankey of Georgia, a
special friend, Diane Cooper of Paragould, one niece and nephew: Heather Dickinson and
Matthew Vowell.
Funeral services were Monday, September 5, 2005 at 1:00 at the Irby Funeral Home in
Marmaduke, Arkansas with brother Ronnie Stevens officiating. Burial followed in the
Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector, Arkansas. Visitation will be September 4 from 6:00
p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Irby Funeral Home in Marmaduke.
Cloyce Cornelius Grooms
Cloyce Cornelius Grooms, 71, of Paragould died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005 at Arkansas Methodist
Center.
He was a retired material handler for Karr-Spring factory of Holland, Mich.
Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Grooms of the home; two daughters, Sharon Pullen and
Rebecca Breckenridge of Paragould; a son, Cloyce Grooms Jr. of Paragould; a brother,
Robert Grooms of Paragould; a sister, Vonda Stankey of Drummond, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren;
and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Grooms; his parents, James and Edith Beard
Grooms; four brothers; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Heath Funeral Home's Colonial Chapel of
Paragould, with the Rev. Earl Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in New Friendship
Cemetery.

Roy Luther Walker, 86, of Paragould died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 at Arkansas Methodist
Medical Center in Paragould.
Born Dec. 1, 1918, in Leachville, he was a retired route supervisor for Southland Bottling
Co. and a member of Eastside Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee Roy and Mary Maggie Walker; his former wives,
Clara and Jean; a brother, Henry Walker; and a sister, Geraldine Boyd.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Walker of the home; two stepsons, Jim and Bill Smith,
both of Paragould; three stepdaughters, Jan and Barbara, both of Paragould, and Shirley of
Memphis; three sisters, Della Smith of Beloit, Wis., Bobbie Gibson and Pearline Wood, both
of Paragould; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Eastside Baptist Church with the
Rev. Greg Addison and the Rev. Dennis Scudder officiating. Burial will follow at the
Greene County Memorial Gardens under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

Jimmy Neal Cox, age 59.
Born August 24, 1946 in Paragould, Arkansas.
Died September 5, 2005 at his home in Miami Beach, Florida.

Verna Jean Bellomy Cross, 72, of Paragould, died Tuesday, September 6, 2005, at Arkansas
Methodist Medical Center.
Born November 9, 1932, in Greene County, Arkansas, Mrs. Cross was a homemakers and a
member of the Buck Donic Church.
She is survived by one brother, H.L. "Dodle" Bellomy of Paragould.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Cross; her parents, Hubert and Minnie
Bellomy; and by two brothers, L.A. Bellomy and Harold Bellomy.
A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m., Friday at Cardwell Cemetery with Dan Minton
officiating. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Bellomy, Kenny Bellomy, David Bellomy, Gary

Tina Marie Dussold, 46, of Paragould died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005 at her residence. She was
born in St. Louis.

her parents, Moffit and Millie Wyatt of Paragould; two brothers, Alan Wyatt of Elksridge,

John Ervie Jones, 78, of Paragould passed away Sunday, September 4, 2005 at his home.
He was a retired truck driver of Pentecostal faith.

two daughters, Diann Quintana of Paragould and Regina Blancett of Lake City; a brother,

Dale Lynn Miller, 58, of Paragould, died Monday, September 5, 2005, at NEA Medical Center.
Born July 18, 1947, in Paragould, Mr. Miller was a used car dealer.

three brothers, David Keith Miller, Dickie Miller, and Anthony Miller, all of Paragould.
He is also survived by two sisters, Carolyn Foss of Paragould, Kaye Marshall of Pine

He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Miller.

Thomas Howard Scott, 81, of Bono died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 at Med Center in Memphis.
Born January 3, 1924 in Fontaine, Arkansas to Tom and Mary Simpson Scott he served in the
U.S. Air Force during World War II in Germany. He was a retired farmer and also retired
from General Electric Company. Mr. Scott was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Tommy Scott and Randy Scott of Fontaine, Bob Petty of
Paragould and Michael Petty of Batesville; one daughter, Lorraine Jackson of Paragould;
four brothers, Joe Scott of Branson, Mo., Lloyd Scott, Ray Scott and Larry Scott, all of
Walnut Ridge; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Elizabeth "Peggy" Scott; his
parents, Tom and Mary Simpson Scott; four brothers; and two sisters.

Marie Edna Linam, 78, of Paragould died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005 at her residence.
Born at Campton, Ky., she was a homemaker and of the Baptist belief.

Paragould; two granddaughters, Bryna Conley and Samantha Clark, both of Memphis; and a
great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Linam; a daughter, Linda Clark; and her

Melvin Lackey, son of Dorothy Williams Lackey and the late Carl William Lackey, was born
September 13, 1961, in Paragould, Arkansas and passed away September 8, 2005, at his
residence at Cardwell at the age of 43 years.

John Thomas Nees, 55, of Paragould, died Sept. 9, 2005, at his home.
Born June 26, 1950, in Okemah, Okla., he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the
Vietnam War. Attaining the rank of E5 Marine Sergeant, he was awarded a Bronze Star and
two Purple Hearts.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dee Ann Baker Nees; his parents, William Ludwig and
Rosetta Picket Nees; and a grandson, Michael Hubert Thomas Bibler.
Survivors include two sons, Christopher Nees Baker, Amarillo, Texas, and John Vernon Nees,

of California; and a sister, Mary Ellen Hull of Tucson, Az.

Timothy Keith Russom Sr.
Timothy Keith Russom, Sr., age 44, of Jonesboro, Arkansas died Sunday, September 11, 2005.
Mr. Russom was born May 21, 1961 in Paragould, Arkansas to Ray Gene Russom and Evelyn
Stage (Sullinger) Felkins. He lived in the Beech Grove and Paragould areas most of his
life. He was of the Baptist faith, a truck driver and enjoyed Nascar.
Survivors include a son, Tim Russom, Jr. of Jonesboro; a daughter, LeAnn Russom of Searcy,
AR; his mother and step-father, Evelyn Stage and Keith Felkins of Jonesboro, AR; his
father and step-mother, Ray Gene and Linda Russom of Beech Grove a brother, Doyne Lee

Reva Dowdy, 81, of Paragould, formerly of Rector, died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005.

Adams of Marion, Tersa Dallas of Wynne and Tina Townsend of Fort Worth; an aunt, Geraldine
Beal of Jonesboro; and a cousin, Jerry Beal.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lilly Beal Dowdy; and a sister.

Odean Griggry Varvil
Odean Griggry Varvil, 84, died September 13, 2005. She was the beloved daughter of the
late John and Elsie Griggry; wife of the late Howard Varvil; loving mother of Doris Duff
of Richwoods, Missouri, Karon Drummonds of St. Louis, Missouri, Johnny Varvil of Paragould
and the late Mike Varil; dear sister of Gleda Edwards of Mountain Home, Houston Griggry of
Flint, Michigan, and the late J.Z. Griggry and Imogene Panhorst; cherished grandmother,
great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt and friend to many.
She was born at Beech Grove. Mrs. Varvil had also resided at Oak Grove and Paragould. She
and Howard ran a dairy farm in the Oak Grove Community for several years. She worked at
Emerson Electric until retirement. She was a member of the Church of Christ and was always
ready and willing to help anyone who needed her. She will be truly missed.

Medical Center in Paragould. He was retired from General Motors in Detroit, Michigan. He
was of Pentecostal belief.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Bowman of the home; three sons, Rudy Coble, Ryan Sims
and Aaron Bowman II, all of Paragould; his mother, Anna Bowman Murray of Washington; a

Vernon Eugene Rinks, 80, Paragould, died Thursday, September 15, 2005, at his home. He was
an Army veteran and a retired truck driver with the Singer Company.
He was born September 9, 1925 the son of the late Luther Rinks and Lily (Hurt) Rinks in
Swiftown, Mississippi. His first wife, Dorothy, second wife, Sherry and two sons, Russell
Rinks and Richard Matthews also preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughters, Debroah Reif of Naperville, Illinois, Phyllis Bishop and
Angie Klemmer, both of Paragould; sons Pete Wilson of Florence, Kentucky, William
Matthews, Steven Matthews, Larry Matthews and Marty Klemmer all of Paragould, Ketih
Klemmer of Russellville, Ark, Michael Matthews of Brookland, Melvin Rinks and Dean Michael

Betty Sue Cooper Kaiser, 70, of Jonesboro died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005 at her residence.
Born at Marmaduke, she lived most of her life in Northeast Arkansas and was a member of
Highland Drive Baptist Church. She graduated from Kennett (Mo.) High School in 1952 and
was retired from the Craighead County Treasurer's Office.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Don Kaiser of Jonesboro; two brothers, Kenneth Cooper of
Jonesboro and Chester Cooper of Florissant, Mo.; a sister, Vera Craft of Kennett; and a
grandson, Carter Don Kaiser of Jonesboro.

Franklin "Bud" Fletcher, 70, of Paragould, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005 at his
home.
A lifetime Paragould resident, he was a self-employed electrician and veteran of the
Korean War.
Survivors include two brothers, James Fletcher of Cherokee Village and David Fletcher of
Harrison; a half-brother, Johnny Fletcher of San Diego; and a sister, Jo Ann Stevens of
Yuma, Ariz.

Gary Franklin Wright, 67, of Paragould died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at Arkansas
Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. He was born March 11, 1938 in Lafe, Arkansas the
son of the late Oda and Opal (Walker) Wright.
He was a retired plumber and of Baptist belief.
Gary is survived by his wife, Frances (Taylor) Wright of the home; son and
daughter-in-law, Steve and Kim Wright of Paragould; daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Ken
Rettig of Temperance, Michigan; brother and sister-in-law, Eddie Gene and Wanda Wright of
Paragould, sister, Myna Camp of Paragould; grandchildren, Kassie and Kristin Wright of

retired teacher, receiving her B.A. and M.A. at Arkansas State University. She was a
member of the League of Women Voters, chairperson of District One of the Republican Party
and a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She was also a member of First Baptist Church
of Walnut Ridge.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula Waldman of Stamford, Conn., and Elizabeth Reardon
of Plymouth, Mass.; a sister, Bonnie Burns of Walnut Ridge; two brothers, Gerald Ferrell
of Walnut Ridge and John Ferrell of Englewood, N.J.; and six grandchildren.

Hubert Walker, 83, died Friday, September 23, 2005 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.
He was born October 29, 1921, in Missouri.

daughter, Debra Bateman; grandsons, Derek and Zarek Bateman, all of Paragould; a grandson,
Eric Bateman of Fort Benning, Ga.; and a sister, Edna Harper of Missouri.

Rylen Shawn Scott of Paragould, died September 28, 2005 at Arkansas Children's Hospital in
Little Rock. He was born August 1, 2005 in Mountain Home, Arkansas, the son of Fred and
Traci Scott.
He is survived by his parents of the home; his paternal grandmother, Rose Scott of
Corning; his maternal grandparents, Peggy and Richard Peyton of Belding, Michigan; his
maternal great-grandparents, Regina and Donald Pethers of Ada, Michigan and Lorane
Reminder of Belding, Michigan; one brother, Hayden Scott of the home; three sisters,
Darian Scott-Crider of Pocahontas, Arkansas, Tasia Alexander and Sayuri Scott of the home;
his uncles, Henry Scott, Jr. of Corning, Arkansas, Todd Alexander of Belding, Michigan and
Donny Alexander of Florida; his aunts, Lynn Masterson of Corning, Arkansas, Carrie Bateman
of Paragould, Arkansas, Jill Granger of Belding, Michigan, Trish Peyton of Belding,
Michigan, and Terri Alexander of Iona, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Henry Scott, Sr.; his maternal
grandfather, Donald Alexander; two uncles, Shawn Alexander and Monty Scott.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 4, 2:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel
with David Richey officiating with burial in Greene County Memorial Gardens. Visitation
will be Monday, 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home.

Arburn N. Graftenreed
Arburn N. Graftenreed, 71, of Paragould died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005 at NEA Medical
Center in Jonesboro.
Born at Paragould, he lived at St. Louis before returning to Paragould where he lived much
of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired master electrician for Grace
Electric Company in Jonesboro with 40 years of service.
He was a member of the Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church near Jonesboro and a member of
the Nailbenders for Jesus, an all-volunteer Christian church construction organization.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Burrow Graftenreed of the home; a son, Mark Graftenreed
of Paragould; two daughters, Janet Hathcoat and Christal Schalk, both of Paragould; a
brother, Louie Graftenreed of Ironton, Mo.; a sister, Lorraine Miller of House Springs,
Mo; six grandchildren, Brandon Graftenreed, Wesley Hathcoat, Jenise Brady, Laura Beth
Graftenreed, Cindell Graftenreed and Elizabeth Schalk; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Greg Graftenreed; his parents, Claude and Lyda Davis
Graftenreed; a brother; a sister; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with Ray
Broadaway officiating. Burial will follow in Clark's Chapel Cemetery with Emerson Funeral
Home of Jonesboro in charge of arrangements.
Active pallbearers will be Jay Simmons, Rob Wadlow, Terry Davis, Richard Sample, Claude
Miller, Aaron Miller.
Honorary pallbearers will include men of Nailbenders for Jesus, men of Rockhill Baptist
Church, Jason Atkinson, Hank Graftenreed, and Jesse Graftenreed.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

LaRue Stallcup
LaRue Stallcup, 84, of North Little Rock died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005 at Lakewood Nursing
Center in North Little Rock.
Born at Paragould, she was a housewife and lived in Fayetteville for many years. She
graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Memphis and served in the Navy Nurses
Corps during World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice Davidson of Little Rock; two sons, James Stallcup of
Belpre, Ohio, and John Wesley Stallcup of Fayetteville; two brothers, James McDaniel Jr.
of Collinsville, Ill. and Garnet McDaniel of Jonesboro; and three grandchildren, Charles
Darwin Davidson of Little Rock, Alice Elizabeth Stallcup of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Amanda
Elaine Stallcup of Columbus, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odie Talmadge Stallcup; and her parents, James
Arthur and Carlene Jones McDaniel.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Moore's Chapel. Burial will follow in
National Cemetery at Fayetteville.
Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. today at Moore's Chapel.
Lestel Davis
Lestel Davis, 79, of Piggott, AR., passed away September 29,
2005. He was born May 9, 1926. He was a retired farmer and enjoyed hunting
and fishing. He attended the Church of God.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Sauls Adams; three sons,
Paul and Vernon Davis of Piggott and Bobby Davis of Greenville, MO., three
daughters, Donna Roberts of Gideon, Mo., Brenda Huckelberry of Piggott and
Karen Davis of Paragould, sister Berthie Sellers of Jonesboro,
eighteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Interment in Brown's Chapel Cemetery. White-Sanders Funeral

Montine Casey Rowland
Montine Casey Rowland, 80, of Paragould died Friday, September 30, 2005 at Rector Health
Care Center. She was born December 30, 1924 in Enola, Arkansas. She was a retired Medical
Secretary, and a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church in Little Rock. She was a
member of the United Methodist Women.
She was a retired Medical Secretary. She was a Business and Secretarial student at Bryan's
Business College in Hot Springs. She was a charter member of Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority. She
was presented woman of year in 1975, and 1982, by her sorority sisters. She was truly
devoted to her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Thomas Rowland; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis
and Linda Kearbey of Fayetteville, one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Keith Evans of
Paragould; four grandchildren; David Kearbey, Lankster, Kyle and Kayci Evans, five nieces
and five nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Artie Cato Casey; one brother and four
sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 3, at the Heath Colonial Chapel,
with Rev. Terry Songer and Rev. Glenn Burkes officiating. Visitation will be from
6:00-9:00 p.m. - Sunday, October 2, 2005 at Heath Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greene
County Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Greene County Rescue Squad.
