Mayford Hodge, Jr.

 

Mayford K. Hodge Jr. left this world Tuesday, May 1st, 2012 at the age of 51.
Mayford graduated from Mountain Home High School and was a long time employee of Special Moments. He was a kind and spiritual man with great compassion and knowledge.
He is survived by his parents Mayford and Carolyn Hodge, brothers Bobby Hodge and Kenneth Hodge all of Marmaduke, niece, Jennifer Hodge of Little Rock, niece, Monica Hodge of Marmaduke, nephew, Anthony Hodge and wife Jerika of Paragould, nephew, Jake Hodge of Marmaduke, Five grandnieces: Emily, Katelyn, Abbygail, Natalie, Madison, as well as, treasured friends: Cynthia Noblin, Lisa Cothren and David Goins.
 

Visitation will be Friday afternoon from 12:15 until 1:15 p.m. Graveside services will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Harvey's Chapel Cemetery with Reverend Kenny Johnson officiating.

Imogene Lamb



Imogene Johnson Lamb, 85, of Paragould, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. Imogene was born April 10, 1927 in Paragould, Arkansas, the daughter of the late Louis and Ida Kibler Johnson. She was retired from Monroe in Paragould.

Survivors include her daughters: Rita (Wayne) Stallcup, Joy (John) Folkes, and Anita Lamb Privett; grandchildren: Cliff (Leslie) Stallcup, Amy (Darryl) Ingram, and Amanda Edison; sisters: Pacola Herren of Fresno, CA and Pauline Bristow of Cordova, TN; eight great grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents and an infant daughter Christy Lamb.

The visitation will be Thursday evening, May 3rd, 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, May 4th, 11:00 a.m. at Heath Colonial Chapel with burial following at Linwood.

Joyce Bernice Vest
 



Joyce Bernice Vest, 71, of Blytheville, passed away Tuesday, May 1st, 2012 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. She was born February 19, 1941 in Hardy, AR, the daughter of Walter David and Goldie Irene Alls.

Bernice worked at First National Bank for thirteen years before graduating from nursing school. She then worked as an R.N. at Baptist Hospital in Blytheville until her retirement. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Paragould.

Her hobbies included painting - she was a very talented artist; gardening - she loved working with her flowers; and cooking. Her family said that she would always cook the favorite food of the person for whom she was cooking. Her daughter says that she always took care of them. Her husband said that, ”She was a great lady!”

She and her husband always took their family with them on vacations. They made many trips to Disney World, visited Florida beaches, and enjoyed shows in Branson. She was all about family. Bernice put everybody before herself.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jarrel (Jerry) Vest of Blytheville; one daughter, Kathy Campbell (and Steve) of Olive Branch, MS; one sister: Shirley Ann Myrick (and Robert) of Paragould, AR; two grandchildren: William Thompson (and Tiffany) of Blytheville and Kristy Wallace (and Chris) of Southaven MS; and one great-grandson: Josiah Wallace of Southaven, MS.

Funeral services will be Friday, May 4th, at 1:00 p.m. at Carney Funeral Home in Blytheville, with Rev. Chris Wallace officiating. Visitation Friday 11:00 a.m. until time of service.

Burial will be at Greene County Memorial Gardens in Paragould, AR.

Dalton C. Bess

 

Dalton C. Bess, 80, of Jonesboro died Tuesday May 1, 2012 at N.E.A. Baptist Hospital. He was born April 18, 1932 in Chaffee, Missouri and had lived in Jonesboro for 2 and one half years, moving here from St. Louis and Light, Arkansas area. He was a retired truck driver for Davis Trucking. Was a member of the teamsters # 688 for over 60 years, member of the Masonic Lodge #460 for 50 years and the Scottish Rite Valley of Missouri. He was an Army Korean Veteran and of the Pentecostal faith. He loved to work in the garden, loved cats and birds.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Cora Duke Bess, brothers, Raymond and Delton Duke and Tilmond Baker, sister, Modina Myers.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Lavern Bess of the home, sister, Alma V. Gehlert of Florissant, Missouri.

Several nieces and nephews that were the love of his life, especially, David Baker. He also loved the neighbor boys.

Funeral service will be Friday May 4th, 2:00 p.m. at Emerson Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Russell Shewmaker officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge.

Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at Emerson Memorial Chapel.

Active pallbearers will be Glenn Newberry, Buford Newberry, Conrad Newberry and Terry Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Williams and Mark Creel.

Wendell James Davis

 


Wendell James Davis, 46, of Paragould died Tuesday May 1, 2012 at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center. Born November 6, 1965, he had lived most of his life in Lawrence County and was a truck driver for CB trucking in Paragould. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Paragould.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Davis; step-father, Royce Riley Sr.; grandparents and his wife, Gina Davis.

He is survived by his mother, Glenda Riley of Jonesboro; fiance', Wanda Lee Partee Davis of the home; daughters, Nikki Davis and Amber Blalock both of Jonesboro; step-daughter, Morgan Davis of the home; step-sons, Macoe Davis also of the home, Zach Williams and Terri Williams both of Missouri; brothers, Royce Riley Jr of Black Rock, Kenny Riley of Walnut Ridge; sisters, Rhonda Hibbard of Jonesboro, Terri Monfort of Walnut Ridge and Shawna Riley of California; three grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Sunday, May 6th, 2:00 p.m. at the Balch-Johnston Cemetery near Amagon, AR with Bro. Stacey Prater officiating.

Visitation will be Saturday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 in the House Gregg Funeral Home Chapel of Walnut Ridge.

Mrs. Rose Estelle Downing
 


Mrs. Rose Estelle Downing, age 90, of Manila, passed from this life Wednesday May 2, 2012 at the Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould. Born at Malvern, Arkansas she was the daughter of the late John and Stella Wilson Redding and was raised in Bono. She had lived most of her life in Manila and was retired from the Arkansas Missouri Power Company. Rose was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Manila.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Sue Simpson of Paragould , six grandsons;
Todd Simpson, Tim Simpson, Paul Simpson, Phillip Simpson all of Paragould, Ted Simpson of Jonesboro and Chad Kingsbury of Columbus, Mississippi, two brothers; Felix Redding of Festus, Missouri and Henry Redding of Nashville, Tennessee. She also leaves 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Sunday, May 6th, 3:00 pm at the Manila Cemetery with burial under the direction of Howard Funeral Service of Manila. The family will receive visitors Sunday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Karen Annette Thompson
 


Karen Annette Thompson, 58, of Paragould, born December 14, 1953 in Blytheville, AR to Herbert and Evelyn Batey, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Karen is survived by her son, Kevan Leake (Jennifer); and daughter, Candice Brinkley (Joe). She is also survived by a brother, Jerry Batey; eight grandchildren, Jayden, Kason, Logan, and Madison Leake, and Nathan, Cecilee, Madeline, and Derrick Brinkley; and two great-grandchildren, Mason Castleberry and Becca Campbell Brinkley.

A family-planned service will be held at Gravesville Cemetery in Pocahontas, AR at a later date.

Edward Paul Wheeler
 


Edward Paul Wheeler, 54, of Paragould, went home to be with the Lord, May 2, 2012 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was born January 2, 1958 in Lexington, TN and moved to Paragould in 1970. He worked for the Lawrence County Assessor’s Office.
Paul was a devoted husband, father, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. He was a member of Pine Knot Church of Christ and a devout servant of the Lord. Paul loves God, his community and his family. He has volunteered several things throughout his life in Greene and Lawrence County. He was a 1976 graduate of Paragould High School. He played left defensive tackle in football on the undefeated conference champions of 1975 and 1976 coached by Bill Keedy and Butch Duncan. Paul never lost his love of playing sports. He helped coach his nephew, Tommy Ricker, T-Ball in 1986 at Bland Park and continued by coaching his sons and niece, Michael Wheeler, Jon Wheeler and Ashley Ricker, until 2006. His teams won 4 league championships. Paul also helped coach Paragould All-Star team with George Taylor and Barry Davis that won the State Championship in 2001 and state runner-up in 2002. The team picture is hanging on the press box on the 11-12 fields at Bland Park. Paul coached football for the Boys and Girls Club from 1994 to 2002. His teams had 2 undefeated seasons. The team was the Green Bay Packers and Raiders. Paul also umpired several league games at Bland Park and Rotary Park. His love was umpiring the 9 and 10 year league.

Paul was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Wheeler, sisters, Mildred "Pug" Olive and Betty Ann Wheeler, grandmother, Alice Wilkins, father-in-law, Thomas Sims, Aunt Ann Smith and Uncle George Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Wheeler of the home, sons and daughter-in-law: Michael and Jade Wheeler, John Wheeler, all of Paragould; sister and brother-in-law: Paula and Michael Taylor of Tyronza; mother-in-law: Berta Sims of Paragould; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Danny and Gail Sims of Paragould, Jamie and Rita Sims of Leesburg, VA, Rocky and Lorene Ricker of Paragould and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated Friday, May 4th, 3:00 p.m. at Heath Colonial Chapel with Bill Drake officiating.
Burial will follow at Pine Knot Cemetery.

"Paulbearers" are: Mike Mitchell, George Taylor, Rocky Ricker, Dennis RIsinger, Ronnie Hopper and Karry Davis. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the 1975 and 1976 Paragould Bulldog Football Teams.

Flora T. Greenway Brosky
 


Flora T. Greenway Broskey, 92, of Kingsport, Tennessee, died Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Graystone Health Care Center in Blountville. Born January 18th 1920, she was a native of Paragould, Arkansas, daughter of the late Thomas E. and Clara Adams Greenway. Flora was a homemaker, mother and grandmother and had served as a foster grandmother in her later years. She was a member of the Central Church of Christ in Johnson City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Austin Broskey, two sisters, Vesta Roedel and Zepha Newcom; three brothers, Thomas, Mack and Jack Greenway.

Flora is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Dr. L. A. Hamilton of Kingsport; three sisters, Francis Kendall of Bruceton, TN, Frankie Bramer of California and Louie Tackett of Bee Branch, AR; two grandsons, Paul Hamilton of Jonesborough and James Hamilton of Hiltons, VA; two granddaughters, Karen Stephens of Jonesborough and Deborah Vantine of Kingsport; nine great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 8th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the North Chapel of the Morris – Baker Funeral Home under the direction of her grandson, Mr. James Hamilton.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until time of service at 7:00 pm. Mrs. Broskey will have a visitation on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the Roller Farmers Union Funeral Home, 1900 W. Washington Ave., Jonesboro, AR 72401, from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. There will be a procession to the Nettleton Cemetery for a committal service at 2:00pm.

Mabel Pauline Barrett, 96, of Paragould, died Saturday, at Greene Acres Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Major Elmer Barrett, parents John Henry and Mattie Craig Woods and several brothers and sisters. She was a homemaker and member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Randy Oliver Clayton, 56, of Marmaduke, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at his home.

Born May 27, 1955, in Rector, Randy did lawn service and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his mother, Rachel Marie Clayton of Marmaduke; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Bonnie Clayton of Lafe; George and Paula Clayton of Marmaduke, and David and Jewell Clayton of Rector. He is also survived by five sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Marston Carpenter of Rector, Linda and Stanton Travis of Paragould, Mary and Larry Rasberry of Ft. Worth, Texas, Peggy and Danny Sutherland of Marmaduke, and Lesa and Jeff Taylor of Cordova, Tennessee; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Noah Oliver Clayton; two brothers, Jerry Clayton, and Bill Clayton; and a sister, Cathy Wheat.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening, 6:00 until 9:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Rector.

Graveside services will be Thursday, May 10th, 10:00 a.m. at Woodland Heights Cemetery with Josh Carpenter and Nathan Gramling officiating.

Mrs. Juanita Diggs

 


Mrs. Juanita Diggs, age 92, passed from this mortal sphere to her heavenly home to be with her Lord May 8, 2012. She was born on July 6, 1919 in Bernie, Missouri. Her life was spent supporting her husband, Eugene Diggs, on their cotton and soybean farm in southeast Missouri. For the last four years she has lived at Sterling House in Maryville, Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Diggs, parents Ollie Kitrel Floyd and Joseph Kitrel, stepfather Amos Floyd, sisters Marcell Floyd, Wilma Snow, and brothers Dawsy, D.L., Doyle, and Tom. She is survived by her sister Eunice Bost of Dunklin County, Missouri, daughter and son-in-law Pat and Dr. Charles Raper of Maryville, TN, granddaughters and grand-sons-in-law Hope and Todd Huston of Gastonia, NC, Amy and Angelo Bufalino of Memphis, TN, Jennifer and Marc Funk of Signal Mountain, TN, and Cheryl and Chris Triko of Knoxville, TN. She was also great-grandmother and beloved “Tanmama” to eight, Morgan and Sam Stout, Alex and Zachary McWhirter, Elizabeth and Liam Funk, and William and Michael Triko.
Mrs. Diggs was a life-long member of Forest Grove Baptist Church in Cardwell, Missouri.

Her life will be celebrated Friday, May 11th, at Heath Colonial Chapel in Paragould. The family will receive friends Friday, 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Gardens.

Viola Mae Cook-Jones
 


Viola Mae Cook Jones, 85 of Poplar Bluff, formerly of Walnut Ridge, entered her heavenly home May 11, 2012 at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. Born November 26, 1926, she came from Paragould then moved to Walnut Ridge in 1978 where she remained until she married in 2008 and moved to Poplar Bluff. She was a secretary for the Frit Industries in Walnut Ridge and a member of the Main Street Church of Christ in Walnut Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Rebecca Cook; sister, Mona Howard; brothers, Tommy and Willard Sonny Smith.

She is survived by husband, Earl Jones of the home; daughters, Joan Stratton and husband Paul of Walnut Ridge, Connie Tolbert and husband Kenny of Jonesboro, Vickie Hidalgo of Michigan, Theresa Justus and husband David of Light, Linda Wineland of Jonesboro; Sons, Johnny Cook and wife Diana of Jonesboro, Lloyd Cook and wife Stephanie of Paragould; step- daughter, Joyce Papadakis and husband Emanual; step-sons, Lloyd Jones and wife Romana and Larry Jones and wife Michelle all of St. Louis, Missouri; sisters, Geneva Rowe of Michigan, Wanda Slatton of Light; ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and six great-great- grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 in House-Gregg Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Janet Louise Stanfill

 

Janet Louise Stanfill, 67, Edinburg, Texas, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at peace surrounded by her family and friends. Janet was born January 6, 1945 in Paragould, Arkansas and had lived in Edinburg since 1980. She is remembered as being a very giving person who cared for every one, she was a wonderful wife, mother and friend to many.

She was preceded in death by her parents Lonzo and Oneida Ward; brother Rhonny Ward; and sister Sharon Jones.

Janet is survived by her husband of 41 years Larry Gene Stanfill; one daughter Kathryn L. Stanfill of Edinburg; one stepson, Rickey Gene Stanfill; two grandsons, Cody and Kyle Stanfill; nine siblings, Wanda (Frank) Ward, Kenneth (Elaine) Ward, Vicky (Frosty) Thompson, Keitha Caples, Becky (Jeff) Tyner, Gaylon (Tia) Ward, Elaine Glover, Roger (Charlotte) Ward of Arkansas, and Bruce (Beverly) Ward of Florida.

Visitation will be held Monday evening, May 14th, 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 East Canton in Edinburg.
Funeral procession will depart at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 15th, for 10:00 am graveside services at Fike Cemetery in Edinburg, with Pastor Denise M. Grant officiating. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.

Patricia Renea Slater, 50, Paragould, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 12, 2012, at her home. She was the born July 25, 1961 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a caregiver and a member of Commissary Church of Christ. Patricia loved church, cars, her family, flying, painting, helping others and loved life. She was preceded in death by her father, Teddie Hueston Banks.
She is survived by her husband: Allen Slater, of the home; mother, Louise Banks; son, Brandon Shane Collins; brothers and sisters-in-law: Keith Hueston and Cathy Banks, Kevin Dewayne and Missy Banks; sister and brother-in-law: Beverly Sharon and Dennis Hammon; grandson: Ryder Shane Collins, all of Paragould.

Loren Vore
 


Mr. Loren Wilson Vore, age 87, of Leachville passed from this life Saturday, May 12, 2012, at St. Bernard’s Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born at Dunkirk, IN., he was the son of the late Homer and Minnie Blankenbaker Vore and was raised in Red Key, IN.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and had been a Leachville-area resident since 1947. Mr. Vore was a retired farmer and a member of the First Baptist Church in Leachville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Irda Mae Robinson Vore, in 2008; six brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Jerrell Wayne Vore and wife Ruth Ann of Jonesboro, James Wilson Vore and wife Mary of Cardwell, Mo., and Gary Gene Vore of Paragould; eight grandchildren, Michael Wayne Vore and wife Donna, Michelle Renee Bowman and husband Greg, Nicholas James Vore, Chad Edward Vore, Christopher Vore, Jonathan Vore, Gary Gene Vore Jr. and Connie Vore; nine great-grandchildren, Makayla Richardson, Emily Vore, Jared Vore, Joey Vore, Jacob Bowman, Katie Bowman, Colt Vore, Cody Vore and Mylissa Vore; and two sisters, Lucy Myers of Dunkirk and Leavera Stockton of Hartford City, Ind.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 15th, 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Leachville with the Rev. David Price officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens at Paragould.

Sharon Kay Ashcraft, 65, of Paragould, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 14, 2012, at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro. She was born November 4, 1946 in Fayetteville, North Carolina the daughter of the late Reverend Dewey and Virginia Clifton Burke. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Audell "Red" Ashcraft, step daughter, Patricia Lynn Ashcraft, brothers, Terry Lynn and Dewey Clifton Burke, parents-in-law: Odie and Mattie Ashcraft. Sharon worked for over 20 years at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in housekeeping and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Jonesboro. She loved sewing, quilting and embroidering.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law: Jennifer and Tim Miller, Sherry Bowden and her fiance, Steve Hanley; son and daughter-in-law: Rickey, Sr. and Judi Bowden, all of Paragould; grandchildren: Destiny Bowden, Rickey Bowden, Jr. and Daniel Miller; sisters and brothers-in-law: Karon Sue and Jerry Smith of Lake Wales, Florida, Kathrine Elizabeth and Rodney Slaughter of Orlando, Florida; Donna Jean and Donnie Brooks, Patricia Darlene and Tom Clapp, all of Lake Wales, Florida; numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 17th, 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Heath Funeral Home. William "Bill" Franklin Allen, Sr., 83, of Paragould, formerly of Minturn, passed from this life Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at his home. He was born October 8, 1928 in Minturn to Frank and Lillie Sims Allen but had lived in Paragould the last 19 years. He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Paragould.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Laura Jean Clark; brothers, Jerry Allen, Carlos Allen, Thaddeus Allen and an infant sister and brother.

He is survived by his wife of the home, Eileen Allen, to whom he married May 9, 1953; daughters, Janet Smith of Wynn; Donna Joyce of Jonesboro; one son, William Allen Jr. of Paragould; sisters, Georgial Freet of Hot Springs, Frances Whaley of Clover Bend, Glendola Wilson and Shelby Bates both of Hot Springs; brothers, Ernest Allen of Minturn and Tommy Allen of BeeBranch, Arkansas; 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Minnie Elizabeth Clark, 100, Paragould, died Thursday, May 17, 2012, at Belle Meade Healthcare in Paragould. She was born April 24, 1912 in Sedgewick, Arkansas the daughter of the late Thomas Edward and Jeanetta Bobo McClain. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie Troy "Bill" Clark, infant son, daughter, Carol Sue Payne,infant granddaughter, granddaughter, Robin Payne, brothers and sister-in-law, Virgil and Rachel McClain and Estel McClain. She was a homemaker.

Frank Salvador Rondone, 58, of Paragould, died May 18, 2012 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born November 25, 1953 in San Jose, California, he was a carpenter and teacher, and a member of Campground United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his mother, Ina Cook of Paragould; his wife, Sharon Rondone of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Gary Henry, and Katherine and Tim Johnson of Paragould; three sisters, Rindy Whitenberg of California, Lucy Bobbitt of Paragould, and Mary Gonzalez of California; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Willis and Jude Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Anthony Rondone; one sister, Harriett Turner, and his step father, Ray Cook.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, 6:00 until 9:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 23rd, 11:00 a.m. at Campground United Methodist Church with Rev. Eddie Harris officiating.

Janey J. McCrady, 72, of Rock Falls, Illinois, died Saturday, May 19, 2012, at CGH Medical Center, Sterling, Illinois.

Janey was born February 13, 1940, in Paragould, the daughter of John and Ethel (Morrow) Gill.

She married Rudy O. McCrady on January 6, 1961, in Paragould. Janey was a homemaker and a member of the 16th Avenue Church of Christ in Sterling.

She is survived by her husband, Rudy McCrady, of Rock Falls; her children David McCrady of Pontoon Beach, Illinois and Major Carol (Laura) Kaim USAF (ret.) of Salt Lake City, Utah; her mother Ethel of White Hall, Illinois and a brother John Gill of Grand Prairie, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother.

Visitation will be Friday morning, 9:00 until 10:15 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Graveside services are scheduled for Friday, May 25th, 10:30 a.m. at Greene County Memorial Gardens with Art Smith officiating. The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 10:15 a.m.

Charles Woodrow Stevens, 81, Paragould, departed this life Saturday, May 19, 2012, at his home. He was born February 10, 1931 in Delaplaine, Arkansas the son of the late Charles Edward and Victoria Clark Stevens. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Rosie Hollaway Stevens, brothers, Bob and Paul Stevens, sisters, Irene Stevens, Lenora Hill, Lilly Jordan and daughter, Debbie Stormes. Woody was a loving husband and devoted father. He was a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Clara Pitcher Stevens, of the home; daughter and son-in-law: Vera and Larry Bounds of Delaplaine; son: Charles Edward Stevens of Paragould; son-in-law: Ed Stormes of Paragould. He was the proud grandpa of Chris Bounds of Delaplaine, Brent and Debbie Bounds of Dublin, California, Kelly and Jody Bounds of Delaplaine, Jon and Candace Bounds of Paragould, Brian and Andrea Bounds of Jonesboro and Crystal and Rob Lee of Marion. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren, Michael, Chloe, Irissa, Emilie, Abbie, Hailey, Jade and Harper. James Mitchell Rushing, went to be with the Lord on May 20, 2012. He was born on January 31, 1955. He honorably served 26 years as a radioman in the US Navy and upon retirement had achieved numerous Medals of Honor and Valor as well as the rank of Command Master Chief (E9). In his time in the Navy, he served during Vietnam and first Gulf War. He served on such ships as USS; Towers, Bunker Hill and Cimarron. He will be deeply missed by all. James Mitchell Rushing went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 20, 2012. He was born on January 31, 1955 in Arbyrd, MO to John R. Rushing and LaVerne (Rushing) Greathouse.

He served for 26 years as a Radioman in the US Navy. Upon retirement he had achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer Command Master Chief, E9. During his career in the US Navy he served in the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars and numerous ports such as: Iceland, Alaska, California, Japan, Hawaii and Virginia. He also served tours on the USS Towers, USS Bunkerhill and USS Cimarron. He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Opal Skelton of Arbyrd, Mr. and Mrs. John Rushing of Senath, Clyde Skelton of Flint, MI, a brother Johnny (Rushing) Clayton of Tuckerman, a great nephew Curt Duke of Paragould.

He is survived by his wife Miyoko, daughter Alissia; parents Mr. and Mrs. John R. Rushing of Bernie, MO, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Greathouse of Paragould; sisters Dollie Hafer of Lake City, Tina Jackson of Paragould, Jacki Atkinson of N. Charleston, SC, Jennifer Harris of Benton, KY, a brother Christopher Greathouse of Olathe, KS; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Violet Marguerite Johnston

 

Violet Marguerite Johnston of Brookland, died Monday, May 21, 2012 at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.

Ms. Johnston was born March 24, 1920, in Brookland, where she lived most of her life. She was a long-time member of New Antioch Baptist Church and a retired employee of General Electric Company of Jonesboro. She also worked in a Small Arms plant in St. Louis during WWII.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Lydia (Winn) Johnston, along with four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include two brothers, James Johnston of Jonesboro and Benny Johnston of St. Louis, Missouri; four sisters, Elmarie Herweck of St. Charles, Missouri, Wilma Cornelia Ogles of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Stella and Clara Johnston of Brookland; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24th, 11:00 a.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, Paragould, with Terry Johnston officiating. Burial will follow at Clark’s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services.

Reverend Junior Vester, age 86, of Paragould, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. He was born September 17, 1925 at Minorca, AR to the late Otis and Quila Vester. He was a dedicated husband, dad, paw-paw and great grandpa. He dedicated 45 years of his life to the ministry. He was a retired Baptist minister and a retired veteran of World War II. He was a member of New Haven Baptist Church where he had continued to teach Sunday School. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Anthony Vester.

Survivors include his wife: Wanda Vester, of the home; son and daughter-in-law: Lonnie and Brenda Vester; daughter and son-in-law: Brenda and Alan Bruce, all of Paragould; grandchildren: Stephanie and Alan Jackson, Missy and Robby Arnold, Kendall and Resi Vester, all of Paragould; great grandchildren: Tyler Arnold of Milan, MO, Tristen Arnold, Cameron Vester, Landen Vester and Callie Vester, all of Paragould. Linda Kay Blanchard Bales, 64, of Lorado, died Thursday, May 24, 2012 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis.

She was born July 2, 1947, in Walnut Ridge to the late Roy and Beatrice Blanchard. Mrs. Bales retired after 38 years with the Arkansas State Parks, and then she worked for Focus Inc. with adults with disabilities. She was a member of Higher Trails Cowboy Church and previously attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James “Butch” Bales of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Christi Bales; and one daughter and son-in-law, Kristie and Joey Huffman, all of Lorado. She is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Earl Highfield of Powhatan; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Byron Blanchard; and a nephew, Jay Highfield.

Betty Ruth Thompson, 74 of Paragould passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Clinic. She was born September 16, 1937 to the late Beulah Altie (Taylor) and Chester Lee Thompson. Mrs. Thompson worked at Emerson for over ten years and enjoyed mentoring as “Grandma” to children at the Paragould Community Center.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Raymond Thompson; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Singleton; one son-in-law, Glenn Howell; and the father of her daughters, Larry Smith; one sister-in-law, Mary Thompson.

Survivors include four daughters, Patricia Hartley, Barbara Howell, Kathy Smith, all of Paragould, and Debbie Friedhoff (Jack) of O’Fallen, Mo.; one sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Bill Potter ; one brother, Leon Thompson; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Aaron Clark, Sr., parents, Russell and Lucinda Campbell: one brother, Sonny Campbell and one sister, Betty Pickens.

Nola Mae Thompson Ussery

 

Nola Mae Thompson Ussery, 78, of Paragould, went to be with her Lord, Monday, May 28, 2012, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. Nola was born January 1, 1934, the youngest of three children, to the late Oral and Paola (Stallcup) Yates. Nola attended Draughon's Business College in Memphis, TN after graduating with honors in 1952 from Oak Grove High School located just north of Paragould, AR.

She married Reverend Glen Thompson in 1953 and performed the duties of wife of a pastor-evangelist, overseeing a church office and various church related duties including teaching classes for The Healing Word Tabernacle, Inc. and assisting in making radio broadcasts. Nola was an ordained minister and well versed in the Bible. She has written hundreds of religious songs and poems. Soon after Reverend Thompson passed away in 1975, she acquired her real-estate and insurance license and purchased Southern Insurance and Best Realty of Paragould, which she owned and operated until selling. After the sale of her business, she continued to manage several owned rental properties as well as conduct the business of The Harvest Time Church and Healing Word Tabernacle until March 2007 when she was suddenly stricken with a massive stroke. Nola was married to L.C. Ussery from 1985 until she departed this earth. She has always been a loving and attentive mother and wife as well as a caring daughter and sister. In addition to her many responsibilities throughout her entire life, Nola was always selfless, continually placing the needs of her friends, husband and family above her own desires and wishes. She devoted her life to helping and servicing others.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha "Debbie" and David Kelm of North Little Rock; sister and brother-in-law: Lenora and Bob Bunting of Oaktown, IN; sister-in-law: Cathryn Yates of Paragould; granddaughter and grandson-in-law: Shannon and Matt Ford; great granddaughters: Maggie Ryan Ford and Mollie Deborah Ford, all of Locust Grove, GA.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of 22 years, Glen Thompson, second husband, L.C. Ussery, brother, Jerry "J.W." Yates and her parents, Oral and Paola Yates.

The family wishes to thank all devoted caregivers that gave loving and tender care during Nola’s illness and friends and loved ones that kept her and her family in their prayers.

Don Gene Gatlin, 73 of Jonesboro, formerly of Paragould, died Monday, May 28, 2012 at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. Don was born July 12, 1938, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jonesboro and worked in Appliance Sales at Sears in Jonesboro from 1971-2000. He was a 1956 graduate of Paragould High School.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas”Bill” and Wilma Frances Boone Gatlin and a grandson, Jordan Tyler Gatlin.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Gatlin of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Nan Gatlin of Jonesboro; daughters and son-in-law, Donna Davis of Jonesboro and Christa and Dale Spence of Marion, AR; brothers, Tommy Gatlin of Corpus Christi, TX and Sharon Joe Gatlin of Paragould; sisters, Barbara Sue Gatlin of Upland, CA and Linda Tauberschmidt of Jonesboro, grandchildren, Allison and Parker Davis, Blake, Brianna, Noah and Ava Clair Gatlin and Hayden Spence.
Memorial services will be Friday, June 1st, 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro with Rev. Bruce Tippit officiating. Visitation will be Friday morning 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.
The family has requested that memorials be made to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, 1 Children’s Way, Little Rock, AR 72202.

Vernon Wayne Holcomb

 

Vernon Wayne Holcomb, 85, Paragould, departed this life, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Greene Acres Nursing Home.

He was born December 17, 1926, in Cardwell, Missouri to the late Luther and Ida Toombs. He was also preceded in death by his sisters: Bonnie Miller, Lurlie Todd and Alma Jackson, brothers, Harold Holcomb and Leslie Holcomb, step daughter, Janet Westbrook, grandson, Jeff Holcomb and granddaughter, Julie Kelly Jones.

Vernon was a retired supervisor from L. A. Darling Co. and was a World War II veteran.
He is survived by his wife; Joy Holcomb, of the home; children: Larry and Iretha Holcomb of Paragould, Hershel and Brenda Holcomb of Flowery Branch, Georgia, Karen and Larry Beliew of Paragould, Donna Ruth Sullivan of Kansas and step son, Mike Boyd of Paragould; 17 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and three special sisters-in-laws: Hildred Gilmore, Ollie Winn and Anna Boyd.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 30th, 1:30 p.m. until 3:15 p.m. at Heath Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Wednesday afternoon, 3:30 p.m. at Cardwell Cemetery with Brother Dewayne Smith officiating.

Pallbearers are John Dillon, Clint Beliew, Doug Beliew, Steve Jackson, Michael Boyd, and Steve Gray.
Memorials may be made to Beech Grove Methodist Church or Cardwell Cemetery.

Jo Ann Hampton Grant
 


Jo Ann Grant, 77 of Paragould passed away Monday, May 29, 2012 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was born November 7, 1934 in Paragould to the late D.W. “Doc” and Ruth Evelyn (Beadles) Hampton. Mrs. Grant was retired from Emerson Electric Company.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, George Grant; two sons, Michael and Scott Grant.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Georgann and Kerry McDonald of Lafe, AR; two sisters, Betty Cook of Paragould, AR, and Nancy Smart of Southaven, MS; 5 grandchildren, Brigette, Michael, Marcus, Mason, and Megan; two great-grandchildren, Tyeson and Karlee.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 31st, 10:00 a.m. until noon at the Center Hill Chapel of Phillips Funeral Home. Graveside Services will follow at 12:15 p.m. at Linwood Cemetery with Jerry Pentecost officiating.

Donald Ray Bryant

 

Donald Ray Bryant, 70, of Paragould, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at UAMS in Little Rock. He was born August 31, 1941 in Greene County the son of the late G.A. and Dovie Barger Bryant. He was also preceded in death by his siblings. Donald was employed for by General Electric Company as an operator and set up man for over 25 years and was a member of Clark's Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife: Billie June Hafer Bryant, of the home; daughters and sons-in-law: Tammie Denise and Jacob Chamberlain, Jr., Jackie Dawn and Mark Frost, all of the Finch Community; three grandsons; three great grandchildren and six siblings.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated Saturday, June 2nd, 10:30 a.m. at Greene County Memorial Gardens, with Brother Freddy Muse officiating. Interment will follow at Greene County Memorial Gardens.

Braxton James Lovingier
 


Braxton James Lovingier, infant son of Corey and Shana Lovingier of Paragould, was born and passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould.

He is survived by his parents; a sister, Madison Lovingier; maternal grandparents, Lorie Coles and David Coles; paternal grandparents, Billy and Cindy Lovingier; aunts, Jessica Coles and Kara Parris, uncles, Jonathan Coles and Brian Parris; and family friend, Brad Sweaney.

Graveside services will be Saturday, June 2nd, 2:30 p.m. at the Manila Cemetery with Brother Freddy Muse officiating.

No visitation is planned.

Erma Dell Smith

 

Mrs. Erma Dell “Foxy” Croft Smith left this ordinary life and went to be in “High Cotton” with her Savior Wednesday, May 30, 2012. She was born February 6, 1932 to the late James Hiram Croft and Clara Edwards in Greene County AR. Foxy was preceded in death by her husband Bobby Lee Smith and her son Gregory Dean Smith of Trumann, Arkansas.

She is survived by her daughters: Dayna (Bobby) Francis, Devona (Steve) Shelton of Little Rock, five grandsons Colby, Taylor and Parker Francis, David and Jake Shelton. A brother, Dempsey Croft of Jonesboro and a sister Mary Dacus of Hemet, California

“Maw Maw” as she was affectionately known by her grand children was raised on a farm in Walcott, AR with 13 other siblings. She spent her last nine years living with her family and grandchildren. Her nurturing and passion for caring for others and unique laugh made her truly special to family and friends.

Graveside memorial services will be held Saturday June 2nd, 3:00 p.m. at Linwood Mausoleum in Paragould, AR. A reception will follow for family and friends at 4:30 p.m. at the home of Michael and Susie Gairhan.

Memorials in lieu of flowers should be made to the Children’s Home Inc., 55150 Walcott Road, Paragould, AR.

Charles A. Lawhorn

 

Charles A. Lawhorn, 88 of Paragould, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at Belle Meade Nursing Center. He was a retired machinist for General Motors and was of the Church of Christ belief. He was born December, 17 1923in Marked Tree, AR. He enjoyed his garden and building things.
He was preceded in death by parents, Charles A. and Augusta Hoggard Lawhorn, two sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jean Lawhorn of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Jim Downing of Michigan and Renee and Ken Rivera of California; son and daughter-in-law Charles Thomas and Jenette Lawhorn of Michigan, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brother Bob Hoggard of Piggott and a loving niece, Glenda McPherson of Paragould.
Visitation will be Sunday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Monday, June 4th, 1:30 p.m. at Linwood Cemetery with Gary Cremeans officiating.
