Alma Ryan


Alma Ryan, 84, of St. Louis, formerly of Paragould, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at the St. Louis University Medical Center. Born June 4, 1922, in Paragould, she was a homemaker and a member of the Tower Grove Baptist Church.


Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Salvatore Licavoli of St. Johns Missouri, Sharon and Roger Hicks of Wentzville, Missouri, Deborah and Charles Davis of Arnold, Missouri, and Mary Ruth Ryan of St. Louis. She is also survived by her brother, Jimmy McNiel of St. Louis; three sisters, Ruth Wooldridge and Billie Ann McNiel, both of St. Louis, Judi McNiel-Wagner of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Angie, Michael, Ronnie, Jason, Tony, and Joshua; one great grandson, Ronnie Wayne; a nephew, Buddy King of Texarkana, Arkansas; and a niece, Angela Scott of Gray Summit, Missouri.
Mrs. Ryan was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Ryan; one son, William Haley Ryan; and by her parents, Howell and Callie Hester McNiel.


Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M., Sunday, at the Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.
Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 7th, at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Jimmy McNiel officiating. Burial will follow in the Finch Cemetery.

Jewel Dean Andrews



Jewel Dean Andrews, 77, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at her residence in Paragould.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vester Humphrey; and also by her son, Lynn Humphrey, who had five children.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Andrews; two sons, Randy Humphrey and his wife Kathy of Rector who have seven children, and Kenny Humphrey and his wife Sissy of Little Rock who have seven children; one daughter, Kathie Benson and her husband Mike of Rector who have four children; two sisters, Martha Cabot and Bertha Scribner; and numerous stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-8 at Phillips Funeral Home, 4904 West Kingshighway in Paragould.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Old Bethel Cemetery near Finch, with Ardell Polk officiating.

Esther Williams Cupp



Esther Williams Cupp, 76, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at her home in Light.

Mrs. Cupp is survived by her husband of 54 years, Claridy C. "Pete" Cupp; three daughters and sons-in-law, Becky and Jimmy Miller of Light, Jackie and Breck Freeman and Jill and Tony Evans, all of Paragould; two brothers and a sister, Basil Williams, Carl Williams and Jean Graham, all of Jonesboro; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and friends.

She was a loving Granny to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Matthew and Jenn Miller of Cooper City, Fla., Allison and Sammy Poe, Kristen and Don Wallace, Seth, Jonathan, Sarah and Adam Freeman, Stephen and Allison Evans, Landon Miller, Camden Wallace and Mattie Poe, all of Paragould.

She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. J.M. and Bertha (Manning) Williams; and a sister, Ruth Davis.

Mrs. Cupp was a devoted wife and mother, a homemaker, and for many years was active in her church. She was a Christian and a member of Walcott Baptist Church. She was known for her sense of humor, being a great cook, and her exuberance for life.

She was a member of the last graduating class of Light High School in 1949 and years later helped establish the Light-Fontaine Scholarship Fund. The family requests donations be made to the Light-Fontaine Scholarship Fund, c/o Evangeline Cothren, P.O. Box 1345, Paragould 72450 in her memory.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Heath Colonial Chapel with Melvin Poe, Glen Hoselton and Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 tonight in Heath Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, Steve, Tim, Stacey and Todd Williams, Larry, Mike and Barry Dairs. Honorary pallbearers will be Brandt and Greg Smith, Daird Pratt, Ronnie Faulkner, Vance Cupp III and Jack Cothren.

Anna Belle Collier



Anna Collier, 87, passed from this life on Thursday, May 3, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was living in Paragould and was formerly of Marmaduke.

She was born April 20, 1920, to the late William and Isabelle Adkison in Obion County, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Isabelle Adkison; her husband, Shelby Collier; and three sisters, Elsie Easley, Elizabeth Hoover and Carrie Boling.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Charles and Leda Collier of Paragould and Allan and Vergena Collier of Grand Prairie, Texas; two daughters, Dortha Collier and Linda Collier of Paragould; three grandchildren, Cynthia and Steve Lovell, Amanda and Brian Mansdoerfer and Jason and Traci Collier; and four great-grandchildren, Wenona Lovell, Emma Lovell, Margaret Mansdoerfer and Logan Collier.

Funeral services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Irby Funeral Home at Maramaduke with Arvil Hill and Larry McFadden officiating. Interment, Harvey’s Chapel.

Visitation will be Saturday evening from 6-9 at the chapel also.

Jacey Kyra Fletcher



Jacey Kyra Fletcher of Paragould was born and passed away Thursday, May 3, 2007 at Arkansas Methodist Hospital.

Survivors include her father, Brian Fletcher, her mother, Alicia Robinson, both of Paragould; paternal grandparents, Don and Mary Fletcher; maternal grandparents, Daniel and Raelynn Dodson, all of Paragould; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Yates of Marmaduke; maternal great-grandparents, Helen Jones and Shirley Keeling, both of Paragould; and three sisters, Kylie Greene, Kayten Thompson and Madison Snow of Jonesboro.

Jacey was preceded in death by her brother, Jagger Kole Fletcher, her maternal great-grandfather, Raymond Robinson, and one great-uncle, Duane Keeling.

Graveside services will be Monday, May 7 at 1:30 at Greene County Memorial Gardens in Paragould, under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home.

Vernon Lee (Duke) Stepp, Sr.


Vernon Lee (Duke) Stepp, Sr., 69, formerly of Paragould, died at his residence in Fulton, Ky., Thursday, May 3, 2007. He was a retired service representative for the International United Auto Workers in Lansing, Mich.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Howard Stepp of Fulton; a daughter, Loretta Rankin of Lansing, Mich.; three sons, Vernon Lee Stepp, Jr. and Timothy Stepp, Sr. of Lansing, and Michael Stepp, Sr. of Coldwater, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Hershel Stepp of Paragould; two sisters, Melba Treadway of Carlisle and Joyce Hammon of Jonesboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bluford and Alberta (Ayers) Stepp; and a sister, Frances (Stepp) Trayler of Paragould.
A memorial service was held at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel in Fulton.

Lydia "Rene" Luereine Wood



Lydia “Rene” Luereine Wood, 89, of Paragould died Friday, May 4, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was born March 28, 1918, the daughter of Alford Grover and Gertrude Sophia (Fritts) McFeeters. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Wayne Wood. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist belief.

Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Shirley and Kenneth Cude, Sr. of Kennett, Mo., and Jannette Carroll Smith of Pensacola, Fla.; brothers, Jack McFeeters of Atoka, Okla. and Eugene McFeeters of Versailles, Mo.; sisters, Zena Watson of Eugene, Ore. and Jill Jones of Stockton, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 8 at 11 a.m. at the Heath Colonial Chapel with the Reverend Kevin Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow at Cardwell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Heath Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be: Truitt Dowdy, Cory Allen, Michael Wood, Jared Cude, Kenneth Cude, Jr. and Ryan C. Wood.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Billie Randle Finley



Billie Randle Finley (Big Jim), 84, went to be with his beloved wife, Rosetta, on May 4, 2007. He has lived in Paragould, Arkansas for the last 27 years, since retiring from the Chevrolet Truck Division of General Motors in Flint, Michigan. Dad leaves four children behind to mourn and rejoice in his life: Helen Tarro, Billie Randle, Jr., and wife Laura Finley, Yvonna and husband Joe Lunkas, and Rosemary and husband Chuck Evans. He and Rosetta also leave sixteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. He and Mom left a legacy of love, respect, and caring for each other.

 
Dad was born September 18, 1922 at Monett, Arkansas to Buffalo Bill Finley and his wife, Mary Ethel Forrester Finley, a woman of the Cherokee Nation. He was preceded in death by a much loved sister, Uneeda Finley and a much loved older brother, Riley Finley, as well as two step-brothers who he loved very much, Clevern and Bill Rogers. His much loved wife and soul mate of fifty-nine years left him on December 3, 2006.
After raising their four children, and dad started his retirement, they loved spending time at their home on Campground Road, Mom working her flower beds and Dad in his “office” under the big tree in their back yard.
The Finley’s had terrific friends on Campground Road. Special friends who looked after them were Richard, Liz, and Courtney Martin, Waymon, Joy, and Elaine Huckabee, and Shannon and Steve, their next door neighbors.


Special thanks to Dr. Noel and Erin. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to St. Bernard’s Hospice. The family gives a special thanks to Debbie and Crystal of the Hospice.


Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 8, 10:30 A. M. at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Chief Walking Bear of the Western Cherokee Nation officiating. Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, 6:00 P. M. until 9:00 P. M. at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Keith Juan Brashears



Keith Juan Brashears, 71, of Paragould died Sunday, May 6, 2007, at Greene Acres Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 7, 1935, he was retired from Paragould Industrial Bearings, had served in the U.S. Army and was a member of West View Baptist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Beth Cupp of Paragould; his mother, Naomi Pratt of Paragould; one brother, Gary Brashears of St. Charles, Mo.; one sister, Joan Wessels of Memphis; and two grandchildren, Lindsey and Josh Birmingham.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bennie Brashears; his stepfather, Homer Pratt; and his wife, Jeanette Brashears.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Brown's Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Royce Boling officiating. Burial will follow in Brown's Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements by Mitchell Funeral Home.

LeRoy R. DeLuryea


LeRoy R. DeLuryea, Born February 9, 1920, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., died at Arkansas Methodist Hospital on Sunday, May 6, 2007.

He is survived by his wife, Anna “Bea” DeLuryea of the home; his son and wife, Johnny and Nancy Deluryea of Rector; his daughter and husband, Laveda and Danny Barnhart; his daughter and husband, Anna and Ricky Lynch of Marmaduke; his sister Opal Charles of Dallas, Texas; his granddaughter and husband, Jamie and Edward Bennett of Marmaduke and Iraq; his granddaughter, Kia Stacy of Branson, Mo.; his and grandsons, Eric Lynch of Malden, Mo., and Christopher and Zackery Lynch of Siskeston, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harley and Cora DeLuryea; two sisters, Hermina Collier and Martha DeLuryea; and two grandsons, Robert and John DeLuryea.

He was a member of New Life Family Church. He was also a past master Mason and an Eastern Star. He also enjoyed being a square dance caller and instructor with the Hooker Switch Square Dance Club. He was a retired machinist from Martin Sprocket and Gear, and a retired real estate broker.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the Heath Colonial Chapel with the Revs. Gary Holcomb and Jerry Loyd officiating. Burial will follow at Harvey’s Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., today for visitation.

Pallbearers will be Ed Rounds, Mike Prince, Jeremy Wyatt, Lavohn Lewallen, Winston Hollis, and Tom Wellman, and alternate, Tony Gargus.

Sandra Joyce Newsome



Sandra Joyce Newsome, 61, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2007 in Paragould.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Raymond and Olivia Retherford, one brother, Calvin Spears, and one granddaughter, Leah Renae Pullen.

Survivors include two sons, Chet Newsome of Paragould and Leroy Newsome, Jr. of flint, Michigan; three daughters, Virginia and husband Frank Williams, Sandy and husband Allen Woods, and Stacey Norman, all of Paragould; four sisters, Marie Medcalf and Linda Ritter, both of Paragould, Lois Paine of Mayfield, Kentucky, and Eva Lancaster of Heber Springs; two brothers, Harold Spears of Mountain Home, and Bill Retherford of Paragould; fourteen grandchildren, Misty Newsome, Matthew and Mindy Williams, Kenny and Ashly Pullen, Christie and James Harris, Olivia and Dan Bulkley, Nikki and Jake Dachs, Michael and Lindsay Norman and Shauna Norman; and thirteen great-grandchildren, David, Andrew, Issac, Xander, Landen, Kylee, Leah, Erika, Hunter, Emma, Abby Jo, Callie and Christian.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6-9 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home in Paragould. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Phillips Center Hill Chapel, with Wayne Faulkner officiating. Burial will be at Brown’s Chapel Cemetery in Paragould.

Lou Ann Hamblen Tripod



Lou Ann Hamblen Tripod, 72, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at her home in Paragould.

She was born March 20, 1935, in Woods Chapel Community in Greene County, as were her mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Forrest Ray Tripod of the home; one daughter, Robin Patten and her husband Mike; two sons, Jeff Tripod and his wife Connie and Jon Tripod and his wife Holly, all of Paragould; seven grandchildren, Laura Brantley and her husband Chris of Marion, Ky., Emily Patten and her companion Marvin Jones, Sarah Tripod, Matt Tripod, Ryan Tripod, Morgan Tripod and Alex Tripod, all of Paragould; two great-grandchildren, Nathan Brantley and Davin Jones; two brothers, Mack Hamblen and his wife Betty of Germantown, Tenn., and Karl Hamblen and his wife Phyllis of Paragould; her cousins; and her extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Flora Ann McDaniel Hamblen; and two grandchildren, Jeremi Patten and Katherine Patten.

She was a homemaker and graduate of Paragould High School, class of 1953. She was a faithful and active member of First United Methodist Church for 60 years. She retired in 2000 from Security Bank-Union Planters Bank after 20 years of service as a customer service representative.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 11, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Zach Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Woods Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Heath Funeral Home from 6-8 this evening.

Bill Phillips, Bruce Dickey, Bob Thompson, Bob Branch, Bill Fisher and W.T. Shewmaker will serve as active pallbearers.

Randall Jenkins, Johnny Stage, C.B. Smith, Tom Brocksmith and Mike Rutherford will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Erma Viola McLaughlin



Erma Viola McLaughlin, 90, of Paragould, died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at St. Bernard's Medical Center. Born January 26, 1917, in Delaplaine, she retired as a seamstress from Janetta’s Draperies. Mrs. McLaughlin also formerly worked at the Brookland School lunchroom and was a member of Bethel Church of Christ.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Glenda June Rushing of Jonesboro, Janetta Kay and James N. Butler, Judy Ann and Jim Clayton, all of Goobertown; one brother, Leon Varvil of Galveston, Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred McLaughlin; three brothers, Paul Varvil, Eual Varvil, Ferman Varvil; and by four sisters, Thelma Brown, Rachel Ward, Blanche Barth, and Pauline Fowler.
Visitation will be Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.


Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 12th, at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Lonnie Pyle officiating. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Cemetery.

Chlistia Len 'Kate' Rawls



Chlistia Len "Kate" Rawls, 73, of Paragould died Thursday, May 10, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

Mrs. Rawls was a homemaker and a member of Commissary Church of Christ.

Kate was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Thomas and Lois Morrow.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Rawls of the home; sons, Eddie Gale, Billy Don and Jeffery Thomas Rawls; and daughter, Euna Marie Dunlap, all of Paragould; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is today at Heath Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Commissary Church of Christ with L.R. Smith and Phil Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow in Morrow Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Craig Rawls, David Rawls, Scotty Rogers, Kenneth White, Gary Rawls and J.W. Rawls.

Roy Vernon Whitten



Roy Vernon Whitten, 95, of Paragould died Friday, May 11, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.
He was born May 20, 1911, in Wayne County, Tenn.

 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eli Keasley Whitten and Johnnie Essie Boyd Whitten; a brother, Bufford Randolph Whitten; four sisters, Elsie Evelyn Whitten, Betty Joyce Whitten Baker, Jessie Lee Whitten Mizell and Sarah Mabel Whitten Guy Morgan; and by his wife, Sarah Maud Lady Whitten, who he married in San Francisco on November 27, 1952.


He is survived by nieces, Johnnie Vinson of Houston, Texas, Sue Muller of Avalon, Calif., Sarah Franks of Paragould and Jo Anna Miller of Jonesboro; nephews, Joe Baker of New York City and Jeffrey Baker of Memphis; three great-nieces; and three great-nephews.
He moved from Wayne County to Craighead County in 1919 and graduated from Jonesboro College Academy in 1931. He graduated from the University of California at Berkley.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.


Mr. Whitten spent his working years in public education in California and moved back to Paragould in 1974. He served on the board of directors of Crowley’s Ridge Development Council, Northeast Arkansas Regional Recovery Center, Greene Acres Nursing Home, Greene County Community Fund Inc., Boy Scouts Regional Council, American Cancer Society, Mission Outreach, School of the 21st Century, Greene County Scholarship Fund and the Greene County Tax Equalization Board.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Paragould Masonic Lodge No. 368, the Scottish Rite, Paragould Lions Club, Greene County Retired Teachers Association, the American Legion, the Greene County Historical Society, the Paragould-Greene County Chamber of Commerce, the National Education Association, the Eugene O’Neile Foundation, the Paragould Booster Club, the California Teachers Association, the Arkansas Education Association, the Nature Conservancy and the Sierra Club.


His life will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. in the Heath Colonial Chapel with interment following in Woodlawn Cemetery at Jonesboro.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. tonight at Heath Funeral Home.

Mary Lou Williams



Mary Lou Williams, 86, died Friday, May 11, 2007, at her residence in Paragould.
Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Paragould.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Lydia Alvina Poppe and Herbert Francis Bland; her husband, Dr. Jacob Mahlon Williams Jr.; son, Mahlon Williams; brothers, Francis and Bob Bland; and sister-in-law, Ann Bland.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Susie and George Cook and Nan and Harold Diggs, all of Paragould, and Janet and Tom Tate of Benton; one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Noreen Williams of Paragould; one daughter-in-law, Leslie Cange of Forrest City; one sister-in-law, Winnie Bland of Paragould; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.


Visitation will be Monday in Heath Funeral Home from 9 a.m. until service time.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Linwood Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Dubar officiating.

Larry Dewayne Nelson



Larry Dewayne Nelson, 57, of Paragould died Friday, May 11, 2007.

He was employed as a mechanic with Sunrise Auto Sales in Paragould.

Larry was born in Paragould on May 5, 1950, to the late Hiram and Arlene Nelson. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Gayla Gean Nelson.

Survivors include his daughter, Tina Nelson; one granddaughter, Taylor Anthony; one grandson, Hunter Riggins of Niles, Mich.; three brothers, Gary "Sonny" Nelson of Searcy, Terry Nelson of St. Louis and Barry Nelson of Paragould; and five sisters, Sharon Gist, Sherry McDaniel, Sheila Brogdon, Shannon West and Shawn Nelson, all of Paragould.

Lou Edna Henson



Lou Edna Henson, 84, of Jonesboro died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

Born in Beech Grove, Mrs. Henson had worked for many years in the child-care industry, most notably at Head Start in Paragould. She was of the Baptist belief.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loy Henson; one daughter, Mary Ida Midgett; two sisters, Novella Reeves and Frances Goff; and two brothers, Charles Copeland and James Henry Copeland.

Survivors include one son, Edward Henson of Hickory Ridge; two sisters, Drelline Ezell of Paragould and Joella Harris of Cardwell, Mo.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-9 at Phillips Funeral Home, 4904 West Kingshighway in Paragould.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Phillips Center Hill Chapel. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Paragould.

Athern Gray



Athern Albert Gray, 81, of Paragould died at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center on Sunday, May 13, 2007

He was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Greene County, the son of the late C.W. and Frances Gray. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Austin Gray; sister, Ellen Gray; brothers, Bernice "Bill" Gray and Elzworth Gray; and his stepson, Kenny Kibler.

He was a retired farmer and bus driver for the Stanford schools, and he was a member of and deacon at Vines Chapel Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Kibler Gray of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon Kaye and Steve Grimes and Shirley Patricia Ann and C.R. Baine; stepson and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Carol Kibler; sister, Thalia Lee; brothers and sisters-in-law, Chester and Mary Lou Gray, Curtis and Mary Gray, Bobby and Olga Gray and Homer and Deonna Gray; sisters-in-law, Carol Gray and Rosetta Gray, all of Paragould; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 this evening at Heath Funeral Home.

His life will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Royce Schanda officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Patrick Baine, Brad Baine, Danny Gray, Gary Gray, Brian Gray and Michael Gray.

Kenneth Wayne Thompson



Kenneth "Ken" Thompson, 64, of Wynne died Sunday, May 13, 2007 in Wynne.

He was born July 29, 1942, to Telford Lee and Juanita Mae Anderson Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Sue; son, Kenneth Brian of Greenville, S.C.; daughter, Christina Renee Thompson of Conway; one brother; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home Wynne Chapel. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Gardens, Paragould.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-8 at the funeral home.

Warren Spence


Warren Spence, 86, of Evansville, Ind., passed away Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center in Newburgh, Ind. Born Oct. 30, 1920, in Paragould, Warren was owner and operator of Frayser Fabric Center. After moving to Evansville, they owned and operated Hancock Fabrics and later retired from Bernina Sewing Center in 2005. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and a former Deacon and Sunday school teacher. Warren was a veteran of World War II serving in North Africa. Warren’s passion was fishing.

He is survived by a daughter, Martha Spence-Davis of Evansville; two sons, Jerry Lee Spence and his wife, Cathy of Newburgh, and James Warren Spence and his wife, Sharon of Evansville; eight grandchildren, Bethany Mathews of Chicago, Ill., Nathaniel Davis of Crane, Mo., Jeremy, Wendy, Zachery, Christopher and Amanda Spence, and Jamie Kinsler and Emily Lee, all of Evansville; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Warren was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Spence, in 2003. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 17, at Linwood Cemetery in Paragould with William Bitter delivering the eulogy. There will be no visitation at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel.

Ima Jean Absher



Ima Jean Absher, 81, of Paragould died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, in Paragould.

She was born June 12, 1925, in Jonesboro, the daughter of the late Roy and Millie McGowan Selman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank, a sister and brother.

She was a deputy tax collector and of Baptist faith.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Pat Case of Paragould; grandsons and their wives, Scott and Tina Case and Kevin and Angela Case, all of Little Rock; and great-grandchildren, Carson, Ryker and Kendall Case.

Family and friends will meet in Herman Cemetery at Jonesboro for a graveside service Thursday morning at 11.

Memorials may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church or Herman Cemetery.

Hattie Louise Noel, 57, of Lake City died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Jonesboro.

Survivors include her husband, Stephen Noel; mother, Pansy Louise Owens; and daughter, Danielle Louise Noel, all of Lake City; son, Mark Edward Adams of Jonesboro; brother, Charles Robert Owens of Manila; sister, Bertha Ellen Mink of Brookland; and two grandchildren, Christa Dawn Adams of Paragould and Alyvia Ellie Adams of Brookland.

Evelyn Tennison



Evelyn Tennison, 90, of Paragould died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, in Paragould Nursing Center.

She was born May 24, 1916, at Dixie, the daughter of the late Clarence Butler and Dora C. Butler Stuart. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.R. Tennison; and her son, Wayne Tennison.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Deanna Tennison of Lancaster, Ohio; grandchildren, Dean and Linda Tennison of Canal Winchester, Ohio, David and Carla Tennison of Rushville, Ohio, and Leigh Tennison of Lancaster; sisters, Kathleen Hester of Paragould and Reba Chamberlain of Fresno, Calif.; brothers, A.P. Stuart of Conway and Louis Stuart of Pine Bluff; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 in Heath Funeral Home.

Her life will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 in Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Zach Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Woods Chapel Cemetery.

Ruby Jewell Brandon



Ruby Jewell Brandon, 81, of Paragould died Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith.

She was born in Delaplaine on Feb. 26, 1926, to the late Terry and Myrtle Ivey. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist belief.

Survivors include her husband, Sylvester Brandon of the home; a son and his wife, Danny and Brenda Brandon of Paragould; a daughter and her husband, Linda and Denny Alden of Tyler, Texas; eight sisters; one brother; seven grandchildren, Julie Aldredge and Tom Alden, both of Tyler, Melissa Weaver of Bono, John Alden of Sweetwater, Texas, Terry Brandon of Jonesboro, Kimberly Esposito of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Danielle Thomas of Villa Park, Ill.; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She is also preceded in death by her son, Ken Brandon; and nine brothers and sisters.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Brown's Chapel Baptist Church at Paragould with the Rev. Royce Boling officiating. Burial will follow in Monette Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Gregg Funeral Home in Monette.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Jeff Esposito, Evan Thomas, Tom Alden, John Alden, Philip Aldredge and Terry Brandon, and as honorary pallbearer, Tony Weaver.

Mildred Jernigan Gray



Mildred Jernigan Gray, 84, of Rector, formerly of Paragould, was born May 29, 1922, she passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

She was retired from Ely and Walker Shirt Factory and was a member of East Side Baptist Church in Paragould.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Gray; and a baby daughter, Janie Carolyn Gray.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, James G. Jernigan Sr. and Minnie Blackburn Jernigan Rogers; stepfather, Walter Rogers; three brothers, Berryman Humphrey, David Jernigan and Murrel Jernigan; five sisters, Flora McCoy, Ola Willey, Vestal Graves, Lydia Graves and Imodell Greene; and one stepsister, Mamie Rogers.

Mrs. Gray is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rheba and Kelly Scobey of Rector; a son and daughter-in-law, Dewayne "Mousie" and Brenda Gray of Scott City, Mo.; one brother, Junior Jernigan of Paragould; and one stepbrother, Harvey Rogers of Knobelville, Ind. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Scott Gray, Ron Gray, Bill Gray, Kristy Lashbrook, Kirk Scobey and Jill Hartsfield; and by 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in East Side Baptist Church with Dennis Scudder and Jason Noel officiating. Burial will be in New Liberty Cemetery.

Rodney Rapert



Rodney Rapert, 37, of Corning, died May 18, 2007 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born April 24, 1970 in Paragould. On August 27, 2004 was married to Erica (Tyler) Rapert. He worked at Gerdau Amersteel in Paragould. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, four-wheeler riding, mowing lawns and Nascar.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Corning.

Survivors are; wife, Erica Rapert of Corning, three sons; Rodney Lee Rapert of the home, David Ray Rapert of the home, Derric Blaine Rapert of Corning; step-mother, Thelma Rapert of Peach Orchard, three brothers; Steve Rapert of Peach Orchard, James Hinkle of Delaplaine, Wesley Sollis of Pocahontas, Three sisters; Dixie Conway of Peach Orchard, Juanita Hinkle of Peach Orchard, Sandra Decker of Pocahontas, in-laws; Gary and Betty Turner of Corning, Bill and Dawn Tyler of Poplar Bluff, Mo.

He is preceded in death by his partents, Richard and Martha Rapert, son, Joshia Rapert, brothers, Rickey Rapert and Frankie Ray Rapert and sister, Sharon Denning.

Josephine Louise Morgan



Josephine Louise Morgan, 60, of Jonesboro died Friday, May 18, 2007, in St. Luke's Hospital at Jacksonville, Fla.

She was born August 27, 1946, in Paragould and had lived in Jonesboro most of her life. She was a telephone operator for Wal-Mart Supercenter, was a member of Highland Drive Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Harold Rust and Ella Hoelscher Rust.

She is survived by one daughter, Kim Bowen of Jonesboro; one brother, Harolddean Rust of Paragould; one sister, Pauline Hendrix of Jonesboro; and one great-granddaughter, Rhonda Bowen of Jonesboro.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Dr. Johnny Hutchison officiating. Burial will be in Nettleton Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro in charge of arrangements.

Modena Alisdair



Modena Alisdair, 85, of Jonesboro died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Skillcare Nursing Center.

She was born in Greene County on April 8, 1922. She lived in Bono and Jonesboro her entire life. She was a homemaker, retired from General Electric and a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Charles Swindle of The Villages, Fla., Gerald Swindle of Port Charlotte, Fla., Jimmie Swindle and Glen Swindle, both of Jonesboro; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Swindle, in 1950; and a brother, Richard Tucker.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Roller-Farmers Union Chapel with John Soward officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Lorado.

Mildred Lowe Duncan, 78, of St. Louis, formerly of Paragould, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, in St. Louis.

Russell Carmickle



Russell Carmickle, 88, of Imboden, passed from this life on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Randolph County Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1919, in Shirley, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Eve Anna Carmickle; and a daughter, Bertha Anderson.

Mr. Carmickle is survived by his wife, Mary Carmickle; five daughters, Mamie Brielmaier of Edwardsburg, Mich., Ruthie Rogers of Leachville, Velma Wyatt of Memphis, Tenn., Rosie Hill of Wilburn, Ark., and Marge Stephens of Arkansas; 19 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and his dog, Fido, that he always said was his little son.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Irby Funeral Home in Rector with Perry Vandergriff officiating. Visitation will begin at noon in the chapel. Burial will follow in Finch Cemetery.

Jerry Gramling




Jerry Gramling, 74, of Jacksonville, Arkansas passed away Sunday, May 20, 2007. He was born May 14, 1933 in Stanford, Arkansas to the late Robert Earl and Mabel Gregory Gramling. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Norma Owens Gramling and a brother, Glenn Gramling. Jerry retired after working more than 20 years for the State of Arkansas as a Tax Auditor. He was a member of Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his children; Pam Thompson and her husband Charles of Sherwood, Nan Black of North Little Rock, Mike Gramling of Jacksonville, Marty Gramling and his wife Andrea of Ozark, Missouri and Becky Hobby and her husband Brian of Sherwood, sisters; Joy Powers and Judy Rowland and her husband Donnie all of Stanford, grandchildren; Amanda Thompson, Heather Carroll, Kent Hobby, Meghan Hobby, Brandi Gramling, Christopher Gramling, Madison Gramling and Joshua Gramling, great-grandchildren; Hayden Carroll and Peyton Hobby and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Marion Gerdes, 83, of Jonesboro died Monday, May 21, 2007, at NEA Medical Center.

He was born October 5, 1923, in Paragould and had lived in Jonesboro for 44 years. He was a member of Prospect Baptist Church and owner-operator of an auto body shop in Jonesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Verla Gerdes of the home; one daughter, Sanda Greene of Jonesboro; two sons, Dr. Kenneth Gerdes and wife Betty of St. Louis and Terry Gerdes of Holland, Texas; one sister, Melva Dean O'Neal of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren, Keith Gerdes, Terri Cook, Kristin Reed, Ashley Keller, Casey Greene and Jodi Greene; and great-grandchildren, Mari Kathryn Cook, Brayden Cook, Sydney Gerdes and Gabrielle Gerdes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Ollie Brown Gerdes; and two brothers, Ed "Gray" Gerdes and Cloyce "Buddy" Gerdes.

Gladys Laverne Songer, 74, of Paragould, died Monday, May 21, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born September 22, 1932, in Bono, Mrs. Songer was a homemaker and a member of Paragould Soul’s Harbor Full Gospel Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Maudie Hancock; and by three brothers, Cleveland, Carl, and Kenny.

Agnes Annabelle Williams, 81, of Rector, passed from this life on May 21, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital.

She was born on November 30, 1925, at Wynne.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Lessie Evans; her husband, Carl Williams; two brothers, Calvin and Simmie Evans; and three sisters, Mildred Harris, Katherine Murray and Molly McElroy.

She is survived by a son, Jerry Harris of Paragould; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Mindy Harris of Beaumont, Texas; three brothers, Don Evans of Tallahassee, Fla., James Evans of Peoria, Ill., and Kenneth Evans of Nebraska; five sisters, Nora Ann Pelber of Ash Flat, Jewell Swink of Illinois, Emma Williams of Phoenix, Ariz., Fannie Lewis of California and Joan Wagster of Piggott; six grandchildren, Michael Harris, Tonya Hansen, Jennifer Harris, Tony Harris, Felicia Harris, Dylan Harris; three great-grandchildren, Aaron Burcham, Alex Richardson and Holly Richardson; and a host of family and friends.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 24, at 10 a.m. in Irby Funeral Home at Marmaduke. Burial will be in Ramer's Chapel.

Gerald W. 'Dub' Adams



Gerald W. "Dub" Adams, 82, of Arbyrd, Mo., died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at Greene Acres Nursing Home in Paragould after a long illness.

He was born Feb. 2, 1925, in Greene County to the late James Oliver and Golda Grooms Adams. Dub was a retired educator and businessman.

He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a staff sergeant in the CBI Theater, Burma, the Pacific in 1944-45.

After the war he graduated from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and became a high school coach and math teacher. He coached and taught in Arbyrd, Parma and Hornersville, Mo., and was a baseball scout for the Kansas City Royals for several years.

He later went into business and farmed.

He was the owner of Adams Gin Co. in Senath, Mo., and ran Adams Tax Service in Senath for many years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Arbyrd.

After retiring from the gin, he was elected Salem Township tax collector and served several terms. He was also a former city councilman and mayor of Arbyrd, member and president of both the Arbyrd School Board and Southland School Board.

He was a member of several civic organizations, but the ones closest to his heart were the Arbyrd Alumni Association, various youth baseball organizations and the CBI Roundup Group, a group of his buddies from the war.

For many years he was the organizer of their annual reunions, which were held all over the United States.

After retirement he designed and built a golf course on the grounds of his home and called it Podunk Station.

For many years the annual Podunk Station Golf Tournament drew amateur players from all over the area.

On June 8, 1946, he was married to Jonnie Maerene Grissom in Flint, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Maerene Adams; his son, David B. Adams; brothers, Amos Adams and Stanley Adams; sisters, Wava Hunter and Vivian Fletcher; and beloved niece, Crissie McNeil Jumper.

He is survived by his son, Gerald Adams Jr. of Arbyrd, Mo.; his daughter, Angela Adams of Cardwell, Mo.; two sisters, Wanda Zolman of Arbyrd, Mo., and Faustina McNeil of Paragould; brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard and Imogene Eldridge of Paragould, Jim and Jerri Grissom of Gulfport, Miss.; nieces, Jeanne Burnside and Cathy Lambert of Paragould, Linda Haws, Brenda Gray and Glenda Turner of California, Marcia O'Neil and Janice Beckrow of Michigan and Kelly Moses of Gulfport, Miss.

He is also survived by a nephew, Amos Wayne Adams of Michigan; grand-nieces, Nikki Beggs Smith, Jennifer Beggs and Natalie Beggs, all of Paragould, McNeil Burnside of Houston and Heather Lambert Styer of Jackson, Mo.; grand-nephew, Adam Lambert of Jackson, Mo.; and many cousins and friends.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the McDaniel Funeral Home Chapel in Arbyrd. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Arbyrd.

Services will be conducted by Kelly Wright, and burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Pallbearers will be Neal Smith, Ken Sikes, Larry Petty, Vernon Haddock, Randy Smith and Randy Jumper.

Wenona Ethel Lovell



Wenona Ethel Lovell, 66, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2007, in St. Bernards Regional Medical Center at Jonesboro.

She was born on Aug. 3, 1940, in Greene County and lived in Paragould most of her life. She was retired from Monroe Auto Equipment Company and a veteran of the United States Army.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Lovell; two brothers, Clifford and Hershel Whiteside; and one sister, Alveda Whiteside.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Cindy Lovell of Paragould; one daughter and son-in-law, Trish and Fred Miller of Elberton, Ga.; three brothers, Terrell Whiteside of Paragould, Beryl Whiteside of Rector and Jim Whiteside of North Dakota; five grandchildren, Shelli Norton, Emily Kate Miller, Haley Miller, Winnie Lovell and Emma Grace Lovell; and one great-grandchild, Seth Norton.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Phillips Funeral Home Center Hill Chapel, 4904 West Kingshighway, Paragould, with the Rev. Bobby Humphries officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Gardens at Paragould.

The family will receive visitors tonight from 7-9 in Phillips Funeral Home.

Arbon Wayne Carrell



Arbon Wayne Carrell, 63, of Grove, Okla., died Thursday, May 24, 2007, at his home. He was born May 28, 1943, in New Madrid County, Mo. the son of the late George and Jennie Davis Carrell. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Scoles, William Nail and George Carrell and his sisters, Bethel Bennett, Ethel Collins and Ruth Crider and his grandson, Patrick Sims. Wayne was retired from Emerson Electric Company and was of the Baptist belief.

He is survived by his wife Bertra Ann (Archibald) Carrell; daughter and son-in-law: Pam and Zane Massey of Grove, Okla.; sons and daughters-in-law: Mike and Theresa Carrell of Paragould and Bobby and Dana Carrell of Little Rock; sisters: Bessie Gosa of Gray Summit, Mo., JoAnn Smith of Grove, Okla., Sadie Scoles of Sikeston, Mo.; brothers: Howard Carrell of Labadie, Mo. and Sam Crider of Grove, Okla.; grandchildren: Joseph Sims, Whitney Massey, Tony Massey, Heather Carrell, Janae Carrell, Amanda Carrell, Carley Carrell, Lane Carrell and Lacey Rose; one great grandchild, Shae Lynn Sims and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday night at Heath Funeral Home. Wayne’s life will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Heath Colonial Chapel with Reverend Wayne Faulkner officiating. Interment will be at Linwood Cemetery.

Marshall Lee Horton



Marshall Lee Horton, 18, of Paragould died May 24, 2007.

Survivors include his parents, Marshall William of Lulu, Miss., and Katherine Coleman of Lambert, Miss.; guardian, Mary Buchanan of Gilmore; daughter, Tywanna "NuNu" Horton of Gilmore; sister, Gwendolyn Horton of Lambert; brothers, Lewis Lee Horton and Keith Dewayne Coleman, both of Lambert; and grandmother, Barbara J. Horton of Marked Tree.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Tyronza with burial in Union Grove Missionary Baptist Cemetery at Gilmore.

Visitation will be Saturday from 9-11 before the services.

Irene Janes



Irene Janes, 86, died May 24, 2007, at Columbia Manor Care Center in Columbia, Mo.

Irene was born September 3, 1920, in Lafe, Ark., to James M. and Cleora Hill Arnold. She married Ernest Janes on April 27, 1941. For a good part of their married life, they lived and farmed near Pollard.

At the time of her death, she was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Piggott. Some of the families’ fondest memories are when Irene sang for several years in a quartet at Walnut Hill General Baptist Church. Until her death, she could still remember and sing most verses of the old hymns.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest; four children: Phyllis Irene, Phillip Ernest, Eric Darwin, and Melba Jean Cummins; one grandson, Jonson Lee Janes; one brother, Elihu Arnold; and a sister, Lura Mabrey.

Irene is survived by three daughters: Karen and husband Charley Blackmore of Columbia, Mo., Willie Jo and husband Jim Metz of Madison, Miss., and Marie Wong of Campbell, Calif.; and two daughters-in-law: Michelle Janes of Belleville, Ill., and Linda Thompson of Paducah, Ky. Also surviving is her brother, Lavern Arnold; three sisters: Lorrell Patterson, Areva Elliott, and Ludeen Baker; fourteen grandchildren; Marla Wong, Richard Wong, Jeffrey Wong, Tamara Wong, Michael Cummins, Patrick Cummins, Scarlett Daugherty, Jason Janes, Robert Stalker, Candy Williams, Sam Williams, Jr., Travis Williams, Melissa Janes, and Sarah Griffin; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 28, following visitation in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Rev. Gary Hancock officiating. Burial is in New Hope Cemetery in Pollard. Pallbearers will be Sam Williams Jr., Travis Williams, Jason Janes, Robert Stalker, McCaine Daugherty and Dalton Daugherty. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott will be in charge of the arrangements.

Rebecca Jill Gramling Wells



Rebecca Jill Gramling Wells, 49, died on Saturday, May 26, 2007 at her residence. Mrs. Wells was born on July 11, 1957 in Paragould, Arkansas, she was a member of Stanford Baptist Church and a disabled R.N.
Survivors include her husband: Jim Wells of the home, three daughters: Selena Horton of Paragould, Sarah Runyan of Cabot, Arkansas, Haley Wells of Nashville, Tennessee, her parents: Lindy and Veraunda Gramling of Paragould, one brother: Steve Gramling of Paragould and two grandchildren.


Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Union Grove Cemetery with Marion Gramling officiating, there will be no visitation. Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould will be in charge of the arrangements.

James E. McKelvey


James E. McKelvey, 80, of Morton, Ill., formerly of Paragould, died at 3:10 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Morton Terrace Ltd.
He was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Paragould, to Leonard and Belva Whelchel McKelvey. He married Betty J. Stevenson on Nov. 24, 1946, in Paragould.
He was a Merchant Marine serving on the Alcoa Warship from 1945-1946. Jim was a contractor for 45 years in the Morton and Pekin areas. He owned and operated McKelvey and Son Builders in Morton retiring in 2000. Jim also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and gardening and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He was a member of the Zion Evangelical Methodist Church in Pekin where he served on several church boards and also served on the Groveland grade school board for 20 years.
Surviving is his wife Betty of Morton; two daughters, Sherry (and Jerry) Birkey of Mount Zion, Ill; Melody (and Bob) Thomas of Rochester, Ill; one son, Kim (and Joy) McKelvey of Morton; three brothers, Dale (and Onari) McKelvey of Paragould; Ray (and Helen) McKelvey of Morton; John (and Idalia) McKelvey of Santa Fe, N.M.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur McKelvey.
Services were Tuesday, May 29, at the Zion Evangelical Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Curt Keller and Rev. Ralph Bauer officiating.
Visitation was Monday, May 28, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home in Morton prior to the services at his church. Burial was in the Zion Evangelical Church Cemetery.

Wilburn Oliver “Will” Walden


Graveside services for Wilburn Oliver “Will” Walden, 83, of Ada, OK., are 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Rosedale Cemetery in Ada, with the Rev. Dan Rider officiating. The Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
Mr. Walden died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at a Sulphur, Okla. veteran’s center. He was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Paragould, to Harry and Lucy Jane Blalock Walden. He attended Oak Grove schools and graduated from Oak Grove High School. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1950.
He married Bessie Jane Miller on June 4, 1949. Mr. Walden was a Civil Engineer with The Sverdrup Corporation of St. Louis, Mo. designing bridges. Mr. Walden was a member of the First and Calvary Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Mo. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club in Springfield, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the University of Arkansas Alumni Association, and he served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the 8th Army Infantry in the Pacific Theatre. He and his wife moved to the Ada area three years ago from Springfield.
Mr. Walden loved to do carpentry work, he loved to travel, and the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Team.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Walden, of the home; two sons, Dennis Walden and wife Denise, Ada, and Alan Walden and wife Pat, of Nixa, Mo.; a daughter, Anita King and husband Dave of Springfield; one brother, Ralph Walden and wife Edie of Augusta, Ga.; and four grandchildren, Adam Walden, Jacob Walden, Laura King, and Mike King.
He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Edith Mueller, Leslie Walden, Nelson Walden and Mildred Kingston.
Services were provided by Criswell Funeral Home of Ada, Okla.

James Randal Beaton, 57, of Paragould, died May 27, 2007. Born August 12, 1949 at Rector, he was a former employee of L. A. Darling, and was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by his mother, Eloise Beaton of Paragould; his wife, Cordettia Beaton of Paragould; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Laura Thacker of Paragould; one daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Kevin Webb of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; one sister, Peggy Saffel of Paragould; three grandchildren, Jake Ford, Ashley Thacker, and Dylan Webb.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Edward Beaton.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 30, 1:30 P. M. at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. James Swafford and Billy Joe Dowdy officiating. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday, 6:00 P. M. until 8:00 P. M. at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Emma Line Newsom


Emma Line Newsom, 76, of Paragould, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Mrs. Newsom was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Manson Newsom; her daughter, Sandra Hackworth; her parents, Spencer Coleman and Hattie Armstrong Payne; two sisters; and four brothers.
Survivors include a son, Gary Reeks of Paragould; grandchildren, Frankie Hammon, Jr., and Joe and J. R. Reeks; great-grandchildren, Owen and Felicia Hammon all of Paragould.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Heath Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m., at Heath Colonial Chapel with Bro. Bill Newman officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Theresa Marie (Schmuecker) Dickson


Theresa Marie (Schmuecker) Dickson, 84, of Paragould, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was born Oct. 24, 1922, the daughter of the late Leo and Theresa (Peters) Schmuecker.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, A.D. Dickson; her daughter, Linda Smith; and her brother, Leo Schmuecker.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-laws, Shelia Marie and Don Nutt, Carol and Marlin Pillow and Becky and Bobby Clifft, all of Paragould; a son, Dale Dickson of Paragould; a brother, Bud Schmuecker; a special nephew and his wife, Darrel and Mary Dickson; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A public rosary will be held form 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., and visitation from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., today at the Heath Colonial Chapel. The mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Matt Garrison and Father John Marconi officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Pallbearers are her grandsons, Bobby Clifft, Tim Clifft, Evan Hyde, Chris Pillow, Mark Lee Dickson and James D. Dickson, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Smith and the Rev. Charles Stoddard.
Memorials may be sent to St. Mary’s Catholic School.

Edith Mildred Westbrook, 90, of Paragould died Monday, May 28, 2007, at her residence.

Born Oct. 12, 1916, in Greene County, Mrs. Westbrook was a homemaker and member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Dale Westbrook of Paragould; four grandchildren, Scott Westbrook of San Diego, Wendy Smith of St. Louis, David Westbrook of Houston and Michael Westbrook of Paragould; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Westbrook; and by one son, Gale Westbrook.

Damon Ley Hyde


Damon Ley Hyde, 42, of Paragould, died Monday, May 28, 2007, in Paragould. He was born July 8, 1964, in Nuremburg, Germany, the son of Dennis and Pat Carroll Hyde.
He was employed by Allen Engineering and was of Baptist belief.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Farris Carroll; and his paternal grandparents, Johnnie and Bennie F. Hyde.
He is survived by his parents, Dennis and Pat Hyde of Paragould; sons, Camryn Ley Hyde and Jordan Lane Hyde of Paragould; his maternal grandmother, Susie Carroll of Paragould; a sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Paul Campbell; and his nephew, Zachary Campbell, all of Austin, Texas.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday night at Heath Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Friday morning at 10 a.m. at LuLu Cemetery in Hollywood, Mo. with the Rev. Duane Dutka officiating. Memorials may be sent to the Cardwell Cemetery Fund.

Theodore Henry Pappe


Theodore Henry Pappe, 75, passed away Monday, May 28, 2007, in Paragould. He was born in Kansas on April 18, 1932, to the late Henry Pappe and Edith McKee.


Mr. Pappe was a 20 year veteran of the United States Air Force. He served in both the Vietnam and Korean wars, and was stationed in Morocco, Germany, and other locations around the world.
He is survived by two sons, Lawrence Pappe and his wife Rita of Mesa Ariz., and Michael Pappe of Bakersfield, Calif.; one daughter, Diane Olson of Calif.; four brothers, Herbert C. Pappe of Carlton, Ga., and Charles Pappe, James Pappe, and Willard McKee, all of California; and one sister, Antonia Moranha of Ft. Worth, Texas.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Holloway and Hazel Ruth Paulson.


There will be a graveside service with military honors this afternoon at 2 p.m. at Greene County Memorial Gardens in Paragould, with arrangements by Phillips Funeral Home.

Dale James Morgan, Sr.



Dale James Morgan, Sr. , 83, of Paragould died Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Mr. Morgan was born on April 18, 1924 in Harlan, Iowa.
Mr. Morgan was a decorated veteran of World War II, and among other awards and commendations was presented a Bronze Star in the field by a general. He was a member of the Lions Club and a life insurance agent for over 61 years, leading his insurance company in sales numerous years and he was a member of the 2nd and Walnut Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include: his wife Anita Jenkins Morgan of the home, one son: Dale James “Jay” Morgan, Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas, one sister: Phyllis Todero of Greenwich, Connecticut, two grandchildren: Dale James “Trent” Morgan III and Mason Blaine Morgan both of Little Rock and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by: his parents: Leroy and Leta Blaine Morgan, one brother: Victor Morgan of Harlan, Iowa.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with James A. Brown officiating burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Thursday at the Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.

Osco Clifford Coleman Jr.



Osco Clifford Coleman Jr., 78, passed from this life on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1929, to Osco Coleman Sr. and Ella Barnett Coleman in Tupelo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by three brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Coleman was retired from Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. He was a licensed Full Gospel minister and member of the Joyful Sound Pentecostal Church of God in Paragould and was a loving husband and father who will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Lowanda Carter Coleman; two sons, William Clifford Coleman of Visalia, Calif., and Sgt. 1st Class Barry Lenderman of Fort Knox, Ky.; four daughters, Nettie Louella Coleman of Martin, Tenn., Janet Coats of Cherry Valley, Betty Fitzgerald of Fulton, Ky., and Pamela Kennedy of Marianna; one sister, Claudell Coleman of White Pigeon, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be this evening from 6-9 at Phillips Funeral Home, 4904 West Kingshighway in Paragould.

Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Phillips Center Hill Chapel, with officiating ministers -- the Rev. Gene Day, the Rev. Michael Kemper and the Rev. Leroy Bozarth.

His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in Greene County Memorial Gardens in Paragould.

Mary Lucille Cox, 94, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

Flora Edna Scott, 76, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at her home in Porter, Texas. She was born on Sept. 17, 1930, to the late Roy Lee Baker and Florence (Chandler) Baker in Mobile, Ala.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loie Lee Scott; a son David Scott; a granddaughter Tanya Dee Williams; seven brothers; and two sisters.
She is survived by three sons, Wendell Scott of Baytown, Texas, Terry Scott of Humble, Texas, and Randy Scott of Porter, Texas; one daughter, Sandra Dee of Humble, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Linda, Kelly, Phillip, Tiffany, Tasha, Kristy, Sherry, Candice, Baba, Dean and Dottie; nine great-grandchildren, Jessica, Justin, Makayla, Cody, Kenzie, Myka, Dixie, Madi, and Landon; and seven sisters. She was dearly loved and will be missed greatly.

Fred M. Myer


Fred M. Myer, 73, of Paragould, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at the Paragould Nursing Center.

Born July 25, 1933, in Louisville, Ill., Mr. Myer was a retired maintenance worker for a cotton mill. He served in the United States Navy from 1951-1954.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Molly; his parents, Luther and Ruby Myer; one brother, Urban E. Myer; and by one sister, Cora B. Simmerman.

Survivors include one son, Ronnie Myer; and one daughter Carole VanGorder, both of Washington State. He is also survived by two sisters, Vivian Barnhill of Little Rock, and Dean Hagen of Gassville, Ark.; three brothers, Bob Myer and Jim Myer of Paragould, and Gene Myer of Indianapolis, Ind.; and by three grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, June 2, at Mitchell Funeral Chapel in Paragould, with Gerald James officiating. Burial will follow at Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the Mitchell Funeral Home.

Flora Edna Scott

Flora Edna Scott, 76, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at her home in Porter, Texas.  She was born on September 17, 1930 to the late Roy Lee Baker and Florence (Chandler) Baker in Mobile, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Loie Lee Scott, son David Scott, granddaughter Tanya Dee Williams, seven brothers, and two sisters.

She is survived by three sons, Wendell Scott of Baytown, Texas, Terry Scott of Humble, Texas, and Randy Scott of Porter, Texas; one daughter, Sandra Dee of Humble, Texas; eleven grandchildren, Linda, Kelly, Phillip, Tiffany, Tasha, Kristy, Sherry, Candice, Baba, Dean, and Dottie; nine great-grandchildren, Jessica, Justin, Makayla, Cody, Kenzie, Myka, Dixie, Madi, and Landon; and seven sisters.  She was dearly loved and will be missed greatly.

Visitation will be Friday evening, June 1 from 6-9 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, 4904 W. Kingshighway in Paragould.  Funeral services will be Saturday, June 2 at 10 a.m. at Phillips Center Hill Chapel with Johnny Flager officiating.  Burial will be in Providence Cemetery in Lafe.

Blake Vannada


  
 Blake Vannada, Corning was born July 31, 1987 in Paragould. He died in an automobile accident Wednesday, May 30, 2007. He was 19.
A 2005 graduate of Corning High School, he was a machine operator at Waterloo, Pocahontas. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his parents, Gerald Ray "Bunky" VANNADA and Pam MULLINS, both of Corning; step sisters Natalie VANNADA and Courtney REED both of Corning; grandparents, Wilburn and Altie MULLINS, Knob; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Sonny and Fern VANNADA.
Graveside services were conducted Friday June 1, 2007 in Cantwell Cemetery under the direction of Ermert Funeral Home.

Nettie Stuart~Ashmore

1920 ~ 2007



Nettie Ashmore, 86 formerly of Paragould entered into heaven Thursday, May 31, 2007 from Panama City Beach, Florida. She was born on August 16, 1920 in Greene County, Arkansas.
Nettie was a graduate of Greene County High School and the Jonesboro School of Cosmetology. She was a beautician in Paragould for sixty years and the owner of Netties Beauty Shop. She was a faithful member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church.


She was known for her contagious laughter and friendly smile. Nettie was always thankful for her God, her family, church and many friends.

Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law: Sam and Landa Ashmore of Jacksonville, Florida, one daughter and son-in-law: Sandra and Dr. Jerry Weaver of Panama City Beach, Florida, three grand-daughters: Cindy Knowlton of Murphreesboro, Tennessee, Sherry Smith of Lakeland, Florida, Deniece Moss of Panama City Beach, Florida, five great grandchildren: Katie and Will Knowlton, Harrison Smith, Madison and Cooper Moss.
Nettie was preceded in death by: her husband of 47 years, Sam Ashmore, her parents Ab and Altha Stuart, five brothers: Charlie, Cap, Jay, Bill and Mott Stuart, two sisters: Betty Fletcher and Esta Anderson.


Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harlen Shelton and Dr. Jerry Weaver officiating, burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Shiloh United Methodist Church.
Nettie’s family wishes to thank every friend for their many calls, visits, prayers and kindnesses shown to her before her moving to Florida.
