Jeffery Scott Montgomery



Simi Valley, California


Jeffery Scott Montgomery, 33, passed from this life on Tuesday, May 2, 2006. His tragic untimely death was the result of injuries sustained while riding his motorcycle.

Jeff was born on Aug. 25, 1972, in Paragould. He accepted Christ into his heart while attending Back Yard Bible School, First Baptist Church in Springdale, when he was 12. He graduated from North Little Rock High in 1992 and went on to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a chef. He graduated with honors from The Art Institute of California in Los Angeles in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in Culinary Arts.

While attending school, he worked part-time with Bacara Resorts in Santa Barbara, Calif., as assistant sous-chef. After graduation he accepted a full-time position as sous-chef with Ventura Beach Marriott where he received employee of the year for outstanding service. In 2005, he was offered an executive chef position with Sunset Hills Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., where he was employed until his death.

In addition to his exemplary academic talents and his love for cooking, he enjoyed fishing and hiking in the great redwoods of California. He was an extremely multitalented individual who had a generous heart, sparkling wit and never settled for second best. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, co-workers, employees and members of Sunset Hills Country Club.

Jeff was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, the Rev. John H. Cole, and his paternal grandparents, Willie and Emma Montgomery.

He leaves behind his loving parents, Stephen and Mary Strickland of Arkadelphia, and Garry and Sandy Montgomery of Helena; grandparents, Verna Stevens Cole, Minnie Jean Apkarian, and Alvin and Jewell Strickland, all of California; a brother, Christopher Strickland of Chesapeake, Va.; a sister, Toni Groark of Bryant; stepsister, Laura Anckner of Oxford, Mass.; stepbrother, Edward Wester of Lawton, Okla., and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 12, at Gregg Funeral Home Chapel in Monette with burial in Monette Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Joe F. Moore



Joe F. Moore, 75, Kansas City, MO, passed away May 3, 2006 at his home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 8, at McGilley Antioch Chapel, Kansas City, MO.
Burial with full military honors in Mt. Moriah Terrace Park Cemetery.

Joseph Franklin Moore was born March 24, 1931 in Paragould, AR. He joined the Army at 15, served in the Occupational Forces of Japan, honorably discharged in 1950 and later enlisted in the Air Force and Army National Guard. He served as a mechanic with the 21st Ordinance Medium Maintenance Co. in Kyoto, Japan, being honorably discharged from the US Military in July 1977.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda Faye Hester, whom he married August 6, 1950. They have two daughters, Alice Faye and Patricia Francine, and one son, Donald Franklin Moore.
Other survivors include his two sisters, Betty Palmer and Martha Adams of Paragould; a brother Danny Cup of Paragould; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, John R. Moore and Effie Mae Hamil; his brother John R. Moore, Jr., and a grandson, Jeremy Franklin Moore.

Earline Pruett




Earline Pruett, 88 died Thursday, May 4, 2006 at the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Mrs. Pruett was born on February 10, 1918 in Marmaduke, she was a retired cook at the Marmaduke School and a member of the Providence Missionary Baptist Church. She was married to the late Ode Pruett on November 11, 1941.  
Survivors include: three daughters and son-in-laws: Ava Sue and Mickey Payne, Linda and Tony Gibson all of Marmaduke, Regena Kitchen of Hot Springs, Arkansas, five grandchildren: James Payne, Shawn Gibson both of Marmaduke, Danny Kitchen, Judy Kitchen and Carol Robbins all of Hot Springs, six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, a special nephew: David Levoid Fultz of Marmaduke, a great niece: Melinda Hill of Savannah, Georgia and a great nephew: David Fultz of Kennett, Missouri.

 
She was preceded in death by: her husband Ode Pruett, her parents: Billie and Ollie Brewer, one sister: Alcie Fultz, twin brothers: Clois and Lois Brewer, one son-in-law: Clyde Kitchen and a grandson: Brent Kitchen.      
Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with Carl Cate and Gary Morris officiating, burial will follow in the Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M to 9:00 P.M. Saturday at the Mitchell Funeral Home in Paragould.

John Bristol



John Bristol, 74, of Pocahontas passed away Thursday, May 4, 2006 at Randolph County Medical Center.

Mr. Bristol is survived by his wife, Evelyn Bristol of the home; two daughters, Denise Bennett of Reedsburg, Wis., and Tammy Burch of Indianapolis; a son, William Charles Bristol of Rockford, Ill.; a brother, William Bristol of Leadwood, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today. Interment will be in Jones Ridge Cemetery near Delaplaine, under the direction of Bryan Funeral Home of Hoxie

William Rowlett



William "Bill" Rowlett, 78, of Lafe died Friday, May 5, 2006 at his residence.

He was born April 16, 1928, Caraway, the son of the late Cornelius and Ruth Pearson Rowlett and was raised in the Manila Community and attended Manila High School. He served as a military policeman in the Army. He was a retired meat cutter from Kelly's Super Market and a farmer.

Bill was a member of the Indian Relic Society, Greater St. Louis Archeology, Arkansas Trappers Association and the American Legion. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper. He was of the Church of Christ belief.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Snyder Rowlett of the home; one son, Don Rowlett of Jonesboro; a brother, James Rowlett of Russellville; sisters Jewell Rowlett of Waynesboro, Tenn., and Christine Rothe of Letona; grandchildren, Jacob Wayne Rowlett, Ragen Boling and Tammy Reeder; and one great-granddaughter, Jacklyn Reeder.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Heath Colonial Chapel with Larry McFadden officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today in Heath Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Matt McMechen, Jake Rowlett, Paul Scott Poag, Steve Johnson, Roy Morlen and Mike Grogan.

Honorary pallbearers are J. D. Dowdy, Al Cunningham and Bob Main.

The family has requested that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Lisa Hogan Tate


Lisa Hogan Tate, 38, of Paragould, died Friday, May 5, 2006, at her residence. Born July 27, 1966, in Memphis, Tennessee, she was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.


Survivors include her mother, Jo Ann Hogan and; three daughters, Brandy Nichole Harvey, LaNatalie Norman, and Shana Lee Ann Davis, all of Paragould. She is also survived by four brothers, Dennis Hogan of Texas, Joey Hogan, David Hogan, and Michael Hogan all of Paragould; one sister, Lana Lee Hogan of Paragould; and by two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joel David Hogan.

 
Visitation will be from 6:00-9:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.
Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Thursday, May 11th, at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, with Rick Ethridge officiating. Burial will follow in Wood’s Chapel Cemetery.
Curtis Holland, Eric Hogan, Jarrod Hogan, Donnie Thacker, Frankie Hammon, and Kirk Easley will serve as pallbearers.

James R. Cole



James R. Cole, 87, of Burton, Mich., went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 5, 2006 at Genesys Hospital. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 8, at the Swartz Funeral Home in Flint.

Born in Paragould on March 20, 1919,  James was retired from Chevrolet Flint Manufacturing. He was a member of Fenton Road Baptist Church. James leaves his wife, Sena; one daughter and son-in-law, Dian and Bill Tate; two grandson, Mike and Sabrina Cox and Mark Cox, all of Flint.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Henry Cole; two sisters, Clydie Dowler and Mildred Stallcup; and two brothers, Pat and Marcus Cole.

Lois A. Timms



Lois A. Timms, 83, of Jonesboro died Saturday, May 6, 2006 at St. Elizabeth's Place.

Born in Lorado, AR., on Sept. 10, 1922, she spent the majority of her life in the Jonesboro area. She was a loving mother and homemaker. She was a member of the Nettleton Baptist Church and was a former Sunday school teacher there.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Talmadge Timms; her parents, Claud and Sally Cooper Barrow; three brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Cathy Timms of Porter, Texas; two daughters and their husbands, Kay and Gene Barnett of Jonesboro, and Shelia and Don McDonald of Beebe; five grandsons, Scott Powell and Chad Powell of Jonesboro, Kelly Timms and Casey Timms of Porter, and Jeremy Kirkland of Des Arc; four granddaughters, Lori Culpepper and Carla Carmical of Porter, Julie Allison of Bryant, and Jamie Jenkins of Romance; and one sister, Pearl Newton of Jonesboro.

A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, at Nettleton Baptist Church with Bro. Stan Ballard officiating. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery in Jonesboro.

Honored to serve as active pallbearers will be her grandsons.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 tonight in the Orchid Room at Gregg Funeral Home in Jonesboro.

Valna Elizabeth “Jackie” Patterson



Valna Elizabeth “Jackie” Patterson, 90, of Pine Bluff, formerly of Marmaduke, died Monday, May 8, 2006 in Pine Bluff. She was born Aug. 30, 1915, in Marmaduke to the late William Albert and Lillie Belle White Weatherly.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hershel “Pat” Patterson; son, Darold Wayne Staires; sisters, Valah Winkler, Bessie Wright and Esther Jane Wright and a brother, Herman Earl Weatherly. She was of Baptist belief and was a retired sales representative for the Salvation Army.

She is survived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren and her many nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be today at the Heath Colonial Chapel at 2 p.m., with Eddie Gene Wright officiating

Visitation will be from noon until time of service. Interment will follow at Harvey's Chapel Cemetery.

Childers C.C. Segraves



Childers C.C. Segraves age 92 of Guin, Ala., died Monday, May 8, 2006 at his residence.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Phil and Kay Segraves, Mike and Charlotte Segraves, all of Guin, Ala.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a step-granddaughter, three step-great-grandchildren, and three sisters.
Services were Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Guin First Baptist Church. Military graveside services will be May 11, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Wood's Chapel Cemetery in Paragould.

Viola Faye Niswonger



Viola Faye Niswonger, 70, of Schugtown died Tuesday, May 9, 2006 in Arkansas Methodist Medical Center at Paragould.

Born Sept. 5, 1935, at Leachville, she was a retired custodian from Arkansas State University and a member of Mt. Olive Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Leslie Crow of Schugtown, and Kimberly and Jay Hicks of Beech Grove; grandchildren, Barry Crow of Walcott, Christy Crow of Brookland, and K.J. and Levi Hicks of Beech Grove; sister, Betty Davis of Lake City; nine great-grandchildren; an aunt, Ozella Burns of Rockford, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Faye is preceded in death by her husband, Albert Niswonger; a son, Ronnie Albert Niswonger; and parents, Charlie Lee and Pearl Mae Archer Dixon.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Heath Colonial Chapel with the Revs. Jay Hicks and David Mote officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Heath Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Barry Crow, Ricky Johnson, Don Sharp, Marty Needham, Randy Joiner and Wendell Kersey. Honorary pallbearers are Larry Davis, Nathan Davis and Stan Hunt.

Charles Elbert "Charlie" Evans



Mr. Charles Elbert “Charlie” Evans was born on Wednesday, October 1, 1919, the son of the late John Franklin and Quixie Swindle Evans. Mr. Evans died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at the family residence in Trumann, Ark., at the age of 86.

Born in Light, Ark., Mr. Evans was a retired farmer and bus driver for the Trumann Public School system for 25 years and a member of the Viva Drive Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Faith Bruner; two brothers, Henry & Elmer Evans and his parents.

 
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Swindle Evans of the home; two sons, Danny and Patricia Evans of Trumann and Teddy and Debbie Evans of Batesville; one sister, Mary Lou Bryan of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren, DeAnna Ballard, Amanda Walters, Andrea Bruner, Sara Bobbitt, Wesley Evans, Dustin St. John and Misty Sturges; and seven great-great-grandchildren.


Funeral service will be Friday, May12th at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Thompson Funeral Home in Trumann, with Joe Spangler officiating. Burial will follow in the Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery in Jonesboro, Ark.

Tommy Clubb



Tommy Clubb, 63, of Marmaduke died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Brooksville Regional Hospital at Brooksville, Fla.

Born May 16, 1942, in Walcott, Mr. Clubb was a retired contractor and a member of Marmaduke First Baptist Church. His greatest joy was helping other people.

Survivors include one son, Kevin Clubb of Brooksville, Fla.; and two daughters, Renee Curtwright of Jonesboro and Julie Ann Baker of Marmaduke. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Henrietta Penney of Marmaduke; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Max and Ernestine Clubb of Asheville, N.C., Bill and Betty Clubb of Piedmont, Mo., Curt and Mary Ann Clubb of Imperial, Mo., and Carl and Dianna Clubb of Silva, Mo.; six grandchildren, Justin, Jessica, and Janae Beggs of Jonesboro, Keelie and Kasey Baker of Rector and Peyton Clubb of Jasper, Tenn.; and by numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Penney Clubb; his parents, Joe and Serene Clubb; and by his father-in-law, the Rev. Chester Penney.

Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Marmaduke First Baptist Church with Kim Bridges and Dave White officiating. Burial will follow in Harvey's Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Saturday until service time at the Marmaduke First Baptist Church.

His brothers will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Harold Hollis




Arlie Harold Hollis, 47, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 in Paragould. He was born June 27, 1958, in Lafe the son of Juanita May Hollis of Paragould and the late Arlie Melvin Hollis.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie, of the home; sons, Kyle Brandon Hollis of Cardwell, Mo., Anthony Hollis of Paragould and Curtis Austin of Marmaduke; daughters, Brandy Hollis of San Antonio, Texas and Andrea Parker of Paragould; brothers, Ricky Hollis of Paragould and Jerry Casteel of Arnold, Mo; sisters, Connie Baxley of Farmington, Mo., Debbie Sims, Liddie Moore, Mary Breckenridge and Shirley McIlvoy of Paragould and nine grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Heath Colonial Chapel with Lonnie Pyle officiating with visitation from noon-2p.m. Saturday. Burial will follow at New Bethel Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Ronnie Spillman, Stanley McDaniel, Walter Myrick, Johnny Brown, Ronnie Hendricks, and Steve Clayton with Butch Sims and Gary Reeks as honorary pallbearers.

Fred Kenneth Herring



Fred Kenneth Herring, 93, died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. He was a painter, of Baptist belief and a World War II veteran.

He was born June 15, 1912 in rural Paragould to the late Fred W. and Zula Pearl Barnett Herring. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Cleavie Alma Penney and his brothers, Russell, Hubert and Ralph Herring.

He is survived by one sister, Thelma M. Willis of Bristow, Okla.; three special nieces and their husbands, Loretta and Wayne Dowler, Lanell and John Goodman both of Paragould and Gail and Charles Peterson of Stroud, Okla. and a host of other nieces and nephews and many friends.
A graveside service will be held today, Saturday, May 13, 2006, at 3:30 p.m. at Linwood Cemetery with Reverend Eddie Gene Wright officiating.

Visitation will be at Heath Funeral Home from 1:30 until the procession leaves the funeral home at 3:20 p.m., Saturday.

Berenice Lucinda Hester


Berenice Lucinda Hester, 91 from the Alexander Community died Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born April 8, 1915, Mrs. Hester was a member of the Alexander Baptist Church, retired from Belks and a housewife.


Mrs. Hester was preceded in death by her parents: Eugene and Lucinda Nettles, her step mother: Elsie Nettles, her husband: Waco Hester, one son: Bill Hester, one grandson: Mike McCarroll, one Daughter: Joyce Hester and four brothers: Earl, Cecil, Nelson and Wyman Nettles and by two sisters: Bea Cole and Eula Cooley.

 
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law: Tommy and Sue Hester, one daughter and son-in-law: Waca Lou and Garry McCarroll all of Paragould, two sisters: Eugenia Thompson and Virginia Walters both of Paragould, five grandchildren: Vicky Yarbrough of Austin, Texas, Kim Hester, Anita Rowe both of Paragould, Scott Hester of Rector, Arkansas and Michele Gramling of Paragould, sixteen great grandchildren: Reece Gramling, Rachel Gramling, Gracie Gramling, Matthew Rowe, Madison Rowe, Jacob Hester, Daniel Hester, Sarah Hester, Mallory Pickney, Aimee Watson, Ashley Heine, and David Yarbrough, and four great great grandchildren: Dalton Pickney, Zoe Watson, Jack Watson and Jason Heine.


Funeral services will be at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould with Bro Jim McNiel and Bro. Philip Bynum officiating, burial will follow in the Finch Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Monday at the Mitchell Funeral Home.

Viva Lucille Gazaway



Viva Lucille Gazaway, 89 of Paragould died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at her residence.

She was born January 24, 1917, in Greene County. Mrs. Gazaway was a charter member of Rosewood Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Mrs. Gazaway was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd C. Gazaway; and a daughter, Lervine Gazaway Hardy.

Survivors include two sons, Moud Gazaway of Paragould and Jerry Gazaway of Jonesboro; one daughter, Pat Phillips of Jonesboro; one sister, Euva Witcher of Paragould; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel in Paragould, with the Rev. Marion Gramling officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Paul Dean Gwinup



Paul Dean Gwinup, 74, died Saturday May 13, 2006 at Senath Nursing Center, Senath, MO.
He was born Oct. 13, 1931 in Shawnee, OK. He graduated from Pocahontas High School in the class of 1950. He received his Doctorate of Chemistry degree from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict and in the Army Reserves. He retired from Arkansas State University as a Professor of Chemistry and Physical Sciences. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Paragould, AR.


Survivors include his wife, Carolyn; one son, David of Atlanta, GA; two daughters, Deanna Gwinup of Birmingham, AL and Donna E. Martin of Paragould; two grandchildren, Michael Regan of Spokane, WA and Rebecca Martin of Paragould. He is also survived by 2 nieces and a nephew.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Charles Franklin Gwinup, Sr. and Nola M. Gwinup; two sisters, Lila M. Ellis and Lola Marie Billue; a brother, Charles Franklin Gwinup, Jr. and two nieces.

 
Graveside services will be held Friday 2 PM at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Heart Association would be appreciated.

Rev. C. E. Moses



Rev. C. E. Moses, 88, of Paragould, died Sunday, May 14, 2006, at St. Bernard's Medical Center. Born January 30, 1918, in Potosi, Missouri, Rev. Moses was a Baptist minister for sixty-three years throughout Missouri and Arkansas, with Clark’s Chapel being his last church to pastor. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Paragould.


Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, J. C. and Cathern Moses of Jonesboro; one brother, Eldon Moses; and one sister, Helen Barr, both of DeSoto, Missouri. He is also survived by two grandsons, Jeffery Scott Moses and wife, Marsha of Cabot, and Anthony Todd Moses of Denver, Colorado; and by two great granddaughters, Katie Lynn Moses and Bailey Elizabeth Moses, both of Cabot.

 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Annie Moses; his wife, Hazel Katherine Moses; and by one brother, Frank Moses.


Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 17th, at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Glen Putman and Bro. Clyde Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Clark’s Chapel Cemetery.

George Powell Dortch



George Powell Dortch, 86, of Arnold, MO., died Sunday, May 14, 2006, at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro.

He was born March 8, 1920, in Clay County, the son of the late John David and Elizabeth Taylor Dortch. George served his country in the Army during World War II and was a POW for 27 months. He was a member of DAV in St. Louis and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. George was retired from General Motors.

His sister, Maco Dortch, also preceded in death.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou (May) Dortch of the home; a daughter, Brenda Dorrell of St. Peters, Mo.; sons, John Edwin Dortch of Bloomsdale, Mo., and Charles Dortch of Arnold; 11 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Winn officiating. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30-9 p.m. today at Heath Funeral Home.

Maxine Harris



Maxine Margaret Gray Harris, 77, of Paragould died Sunday, May 14, 2006 at her residence.

She was born March 4, 1929, in Marmaduke to the late Richard Thomas and Florence Holt Gray. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paragould. Maxine was also preceded in death by a brother, Garland Gray.

Survivors include her husband, Robert H. Harris of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert Glenn and Roxanne Harris of Houston; one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Lynn and Jim Brake of Bartlett, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Amanda Graham and Kara Kent of Memphis and Reagan Harris of Houston; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Heath Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Paul Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 tonight at Heath Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are Ethan Busby, Alvin Arnold, Jim Burgess, Bill Fisher, Dale Wikowsky and Thomas Hancock.

Leo Jackson Hardin, 90, of Paragould, died Sunday, May 14, 2006, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.


Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Davis of Sacramento, California; one brother, Bill Hardin; and one sister, Helen Bowen, both of California. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kimberly Davis, Steve Davis, Mark Sharrock, and Terri Owinyo; and by six great grandchildren, Miles Davis Henkel, Ellie Davis, Jason Sharrock, Christa, Taryn, and Brandon Gugel. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, S. Ellen (Hopper) Hardin; and by one daughter, Jackie Sharrock.

Charlie James Freeman



Charlie James Freeman, 81, of Paragould died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, at his residence.

Born April 4, 1925, at Paragould, he was a retired farmer and a member of Alexander Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Freeman of the home; one stepson, Anton Passard of Paragould; and three stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jody and Eva Mae Freeman; and by three brothers.

Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in New Liberty Cemetery with Philip Bynum officiating. The procession will leave Mitchell Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Hettie S Williams



Hettie S. Williams, 88, of Paragould, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born August 24, 1917, in Beech Grove, she married Tyler Williams in 1936. Together, they owned and operated Williams Food Center, a general store, Exxon gasoline station, and restaurant, and also the Williams Cotton Gin.

 
Hettie was an active member the Beech Grove United Methodist Church for 55 years, and served a total of 13 years on the District U.M.W. She held various offices in the district including President, Treasurer, Secretary of Christian Social Involvement, and Chairperson for U.M.W. nominations. After moving to Paragould in 1985, she joined the First United Methodist Church and again was active in church functions. Hettie was a member of the Jenny Knox Circle; sang in the choir: served on the Memorial Committee and as President of the General U.M.W.; and taught Sunday School, youth groups and Homemakers Class.
Mrs. Williams was a 50 year member of Eastern Star Lodge # 297; a lifetime member of the Chamber of Commerce; and a lifetime member of the Democratic Party. She worked on the Election Boards in Paragould each year beginning in 1986. She was a Crowley’s Ridge Development Council volunteer and vice-chairman. Since 1986, she was a member of the B&PW where she served on various committees. She was a member of the Arkansas Methodist Medical Center Auxiliary and held many offices.
Hettie enjoyed traveling and was proud to have visited ten foreign countries, and 48 states.


Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Franklin and Sherrie Williams of Beech Grove; one daughter, Jane Davidson of North Little Rock; and four grandchildren, Christie Tinnin of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Shana Renner of Austin, Texas, Derrick Davidson of Rogers, Arkansas, and Darrin Davidson of Memphis. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Marin Tinnin of Fayetteville, Landon Davidson of Rogers, and Warner Davidson of Memphis; and by two step great grandchildren, Tyler and Taryn Thompson of Paragould.

 
She was preceded in death by her parents, J. E. and Lydia Winn; her husband, Tyler Williams; one daughter, Frances Diane Williams; one brother, C. E. Winn; one sister, Reba Stallcup; and by one son-in-law, Walter Davidson.
Funeral service will be Saturday, May 20th, 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, Paragould, with Paul Dubar and Zach Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Virgil Jefferson Graves



Virgil J. Graves , 78 of St. Louis formerly of Rector, Arkansas died on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at DesPeres Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Born on August 23, 1927 in Paragould, Arkansas.

Mr. Graves was a member of Southside Gen Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents,Clyde and Alma Graves, an infant grandson, And a son in law, Eugene Robinson.


Survivors include two sons, Dennis Graves of St. Louis, Missouri; Dickie Graves of Kennett, Missouri. A step son, Gary Bowlin of Danville,Illinois. two daughters, Debbie Robinson of Rector, Arkansas and Dana Graves of Paragould, Arkansas. One brother, Dilmos Graves of Paragould, Arkansas. Nine grandchildren, Shay Robinson, Misty Mangrum, Dustin Graves, Aaron McDaniel, Sean Graves, Taylor Ray, Kaitlyn O’Neil, Ricky Holcomb, and Chance Holcomb. Two step grandchildren, Tyler and Brandy Bowlin .two great grandchildren, Gracyn Robinson, Lexie Mangrum and Trenton McDaniel.


Visitation will be from 700 to 9:00 P.M.Friday at the Mitchell Funeral Home of Rector.

Jerry Don Greer


Jerry Don Greer, 44, of Paragould passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

He is survived by a son, Sebastian J.D. Greer of Paragould; his mother, Melba Lou Studdard of Hoxie; three brothers, Tommy Utley and Ronald Gene Utley, both of Paragould, and Curtis Wayne Griffin of California; and three sisters, Dorothy Ann Greer and Madeline White of Paragould and Tracy Bailey of Hoxie.

Graveside services will be Monday at Brown's Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements are by Phillips Funeral Home of Paragould.

Violet Eva Hampton



Violet Eva Hampton, 89, of Paragould died Wednesday, May 17, 2006, in Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Aug. 1, 1916, at Kennett, Mo., to the late Shelby and Addie (Dortch) Wilkins. She was a homemaker and a member of River of Life Church.

Violet's husband, Elvis Hampton, also precedes her in death, along with a son, Donald Hampton, and two brothers, Oral and Verlon Wilkins.

Survivors include her daughters, June Hodge of Marshall, Mich., Shirley Riggs of Blytheville and Carolyn Hodge of Paragould; one son, Jack Hampton of Powhatan; one brother, Paul Wilkins of Jonesboro; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild due in August.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday in Heath Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Floyd Ryles officiating. Burial will follow in Harvey's Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Heath Funeral Home.

Terry Lynn Adams



Terry Lynn Adams, 53, of Paragould, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at his residence. He was born February 28, 1953, in Leachville, and was a 1971 graduate of Oak Grove High School. Mr. Adams was a truck driver for Celadon Trucking, and of the Baptist faith.


Survivors include his wife, Genia Adams of the home; his mother, Dorthy Adams; and two sons, Chad Adams and Brad Adams, all of Paragould. He is also survived by two sisters, Donna Brooks of Paragould, Phyllis McFarland of Leachville; two granddaughters, Kaitlyn Adams of Brookland, Breanna Adams; and two grandsons, Chase Adams and Grant Adams, all of Paragould.


He was preceded in death by his father, Leo Adams; two sons, Jeff Adams and Terry Mark Adams; and by a brother-in-law, Glen Brooks.


Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Sunday at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, Paragould, with Kenneth Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M Saturday, at Mitchell Funeral Home in Paragould.

Fred Hershel Bryant



Fred Hershel Bryant, 73, of Paragould, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at his residence. Born February 13, 1933, in Morehouse, Missouri, Mr. Bryant retired from Monroe Auto Equipment and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Bryant of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Everett and Della Bradley, Garry and Donna Bradley, all of Paragould, and Arthur and Flavia Davis of Lafe. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.


Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ora Bryant; one step-brother; and three stepsisters.

Paul Burnace Grogan




Paul Burnace Grogan, owner of the Dairy Queen of Paragould, died Thursday, May 18th, 2006 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.


Born February 27, 1916 in Hawkinsville, Tennessee, he operated a milk processing plant in Ripley, Tennessee and three fast food restaurants in Tennessee. The Grogans moved to Paragould and opened the Dairy Queen in 1953. He was a charter member of the East Main Church of Christ.

 
Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Annie Grogan; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Connie Grogan of Paragould; one grandson, John Paul Grogan of Burlington, Vermont; and one granddaughter, Lee Ann Grogan of Conway, Arkansas.


He was preceded in death by his parents, G. D. and Rachel Grogan; one brother, Weldan Grogan; and by three sisters, Marjorie Via, Helen Kirby, and Virginia Grogan.


Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00-9:00 p.m., at East Main Church of Christ, Paragould.
Graveside funeral services will be Sunday, May 21st, 2:30 P. M. at Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Dwight Harrison and Zane Gray officiating. Mitchell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Those wishing to go in procession should gather at the funeral home at 2:00 p.m.

Velma Gill



Velma Gill, 75, of Jonesboro, formerly of Bay, died at St. Bernard's Medical Center on Thursday, May 18, 2006.

Velma was born December 7, 1930 in Light, Arkansas to Walter and Nancy Lenderman Lands. She married Junior Gill on Dec. 27, 1957. Velma was a retired food service worker for the Bay public schools. She was a lifelong member of Nettleton Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Junior Gill of the home; a son, Tim Gill of Jonesboro; two daughters, Kim Parker of Jonesboro and Sande Rainbolt of Moberly, Mo.; three brothers, Edward Lands of Light, Marshall Lands of Jonesboro and Michael Lands of Little Rock; five sisters, Mary Lou Boozer, Regina Erwin and June Kemp, all of Jonesboro, Ruth Cook of Memphis and Betty Sue Foster of Light; and four grandchildren.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Nancy Lands, and a sister, Carol Lands.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Langford-Bookout Funeral Chapel with ministers Jimmy Young and Mike Dugger officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in Walcott.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The deacons of Nettleton Church of Christ will be serving as pallbearers.

Arthur Franklin Simpson



Arthur Franklin "Art" Simpson, 81, of Paragould died Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born July 11, 1924, in Craighead County, he was the retired owner of Art's Auto Parts. Mr. Simpson also retired from the Paragould School District as a bus driver, had been a van driver for the Senior Bees and a transporter for the Greene County Sheriff's Department. An Army veteran of World War II, he was of Baptist faith and an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include two sons and three daughters-in-law, Don and Peggy Thompson of Pine Bluff, Gary and Opaline Thompson of Jonesboro and Debbie Thompson of Paragould; and one daughter and son-in-law, Danna and Mark Zarlingo of Paragould. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Gibson of Commerce, Calif.; five grandchildren, Lara Thompson of Hot Springs, Jeremy Williams of Maryland, and Blake Williams, Caitlin Cooper and Carson Zarlingo, all of Paragould; and by six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Simpson; his parents, Franklin and Ruth Simpson; one son, Billy Joe Thompson; one brother, Henry Lee Simpson; and by three sisters, Dewell James, Leona Andrews and Frankie Smith. Visitation will be tonight from 6-9 at Mitchell Funeral Home in Paragould.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday graveside at Linwood Cemetery with Mike Gaskill officiating.

Martha Glendean Short


Martha Glendean Short, 71, of Paragould, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born January 27, 1935, in Monette, she was a homemaker and a member of the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary.


Survivors include four sons, Owen Battles of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Dewayne Battles of New Jersey, Leslie Battles of Maine, and William Dean Short of Carthage, Mississippi; and one daughter, Maggie Anderson of St. Louis. She is also survived by two brothers, Raybourn Bazzill of Starkville, Mississippi and Roy Bazzill of St. Louis; and by five grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Maggie Bazzill; and her husband, William Earl Short.

R.V. Cooper



R.V. Cooper, 82, of Paragould, formerly of Knobel, died May 25, 2006 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

He was a veteran of the Navy Air Corp in World War II. He was a member of Paragould Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was retired from Corning Distribution. His hobbies included woodworking.

Services will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Ermert Funeral Home in Corning with visitation Saturday from 6-9 p.m. Burial will be in the Bond Cemetery with the Rev. Kelsey Vallance officiating.

Mary Louise Weitzel



Mary Louise Weitzel, 91, of Paragould died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born April 6, 1915, Mrs. Weitzel had lived in Paragould for 10 years, moving there from Parsons, Kan. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Parsons. She served as a veteran of WW-II serving in the U.S. Army.

She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post #8018 of East Greenwich, R.I.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell H. Weitzel.

Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl S. Locatelli; three grandchildren, Russell Locatelli, Betty Locatelli and Amy Veteto; and two great-grandchildren, Blake Tyler and Amanda Tyler.

Burial with full military honors at Fort Scott National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kan., will be held at a later date.

James Hunter Collins




Hunter Collins, 15 of Lafe, Arkansas died Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Hunter was born on December 3, 1990 in Memphis, Tennessee, he was a 9th grader at Greene County Tech and a member of the West View Baptist Church.


Survivors include: his parents: Joyce and Albert Collins, Jr. of the home, two brothers: Todd Moseley of Enterprise, Mississippi, Josh Collins of Lafe, one sister: Jennifer Lockhart of Cordova, Tennessee, paternal grandparents: Betty and Albert Collins, Sr. of Decatur, Tennessee, and maternal grandmother: Noretta Stark of Meridian, Mississippi.


Hunter was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Cecil Stark.

Junior Gill



Mr. Junior Gill, 75, of Jonesboro died Friday morning, May 26, 2006, at St. Bernard's Medical Center.

Born September 29, 1930 in Jonesboro to Goldie C. and Lucile Willis Gill, he was a retired janitor for the Bay and Jonesboro school systems. He farmed and raised livestock most of his life.

Survivors include a son, Tim Gill of Jonesboro; two daughters, Kim Parker of Jonesboro and Sandie Rainbolt of Moberly, Mo.; a sister, Bertha Overfield of Lansing, Mich., and Mae Piske of Harrison; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Gill, on May 18, 2006; his parents; and a brother, Owen C. Gill.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Langford-Bookout Funeral Home of Jonesboro, with Jimmy Young and Mike Dugger officiating. Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery near Walcott. Langford-Bookout Funeral Home of Jonesboro is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Active pallbearers will be deacons of Nettleton Church of Christ.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at Langford-Bookout Funeral Home, 1900 West Washington Ave., Jonesboro.

Memorials may be made to help with the medical bills for Kassidi Lands, an 18-year-old girl who has lupus and has had a kidney transplant. She is the great-niece of the late Velma Gill.

Denise P. Bowman



Denise P. Bowman, 49, of Marmaduke died at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould on Sunday, May 28, 2006. Born June 19, 1956, in Memphis to Nolan Bowman and Nettie Faye Bowman, she was a longtime area resident and a member of the First Baptist Church in Marmaduke.

Miss Bowman worked as a sporting goods department manager for Wal-Mart in Paragould. She was also very active as a fund-raising volunteer for Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

Survivors include her parents of Marmaduke; five aunts, Pansy Markin Keith of Hemet, Calif., Flora Jean Markin Chandler of Louisville, Ky., Gearldine Markin of Monette, Mazine Markin of Memphis and Shelby Markin Haney of Jonesboro; one uncle, Burl Poe of Marmaduke; and a host of friends and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Opal and Node Bowman and the Rev. John and Gracie Markin.

Services will be at 10 this morning at First Baptist Church of Marmaduke with the Rev. Kim Bridges officiating. A private burial will follow with Faith Funeral Service in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to First Baptist Church of Marmaduke for the youth department or the Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

Active pallbearers include Mike Roberts, Terry Roberts, Jimmie Crooms, Gray Neal Priest, Shawn Gibson, Rick Poe, Larry Markin and Ronnie Bowman. Honorary pallbearers will be Doyle Rippy, Ben Whittaker, Don Hardin and members of the Marmaduke Saddle Club.

Alfred Wayne Morgan




Alfred Wayne Morgan, 53, died at his home in Paragould on Monday, May 29, 2006. He was born in Paragould on May 28, 1953, graduated from Paragould High School and attended Arkansas State University and Brooks Art Institute. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Paragould. He worked at Harold Morgan Furniture Center for many years.

 
Survivors include his son, Chase Reed Morgan of Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas; his parents, Harold and Martha Morgan of Paragould; his brother and sister-in-law, William and Marsha Morgan of Paragould; a niece, Jennifer Morgan Post of Fayetteville; two nephews, Nate Morgan of Paragould and Steve Morgan of Conway; and a great nephew, William Michael Morgan of Conway.

 
Alfred was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Hettie and Frank Wood and by his paternal grandparents, Eula Morgan and B. A. Morgan.


Visitation will be Wednesday, May 31st, from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home, with the service immediately following at 1:30 in the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, with Paul Dubar and Eddie Harris officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery.

Walen Smith




Walen Smith, 73, of Paragould died Monday, May 29, 2006, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born March 7, 1933 in Beech Grove, he was the former owner of Walen Smith Grocery and retired as executive director of the Paragould Housing Authority. Mr. Smith was a member and deacon of East Main Church of Christ: a charter member of the Paragould Civitan Club; and a member of the Board of Directors of Fox Hills Country Club.


Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Wanda Smith of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Jan Smith of Paragould; two brothers, Jimmie Smith of St. Louis, Missouri, and Freddie Smith of Paragould; one sister, Winnie Edwards of Paragould; and by two grandsons, Jeremie and Drew Smith of Paragould.


He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Galen Smith; a sister, Jovene Smith; and by his parents, Joe and Burla Smith. Visitation will be from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. Wednesday, at the Mitchell Funeral Home of Paragould.


Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Dwight Harrison and Michael Cox officiating. Burial will follow in the Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery.


Jeremie Smith, Drew Smith, Holden Smith, Hunter Smith, Jim Ford, Justin Cox, Redgie Jetton, Nippy Mangrum, Lou Citro, and Kyle Smith will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the elders and deacons of East Main Church of Christ and Civitan members.
Memorials to the Village Creek Church of Christ would be appreciated.

Willie Lee Moore

 

Mrs. Willie Lee Moore, 82, of Marmaduke, died Monday, May 29, 2006, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, with her family by her side. She was born May 30, 1923, to the late William and Goldie Heller in Kansas City, Mo.

Her husband, Virgil Harold Moore, whom she married on January 5, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., preceded her in death on August 31, 1985.

She was a Red Cross Volunteer, and an organ donor. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her son, Gary Moore and wife, Jan, of Burton, Mich.; daughters, Barb Lewis, and husband Mal of Paragould; Carla Thompson and husband, Guy, of Bowling Green, Ken.; Marsha Morris and companion, Chuck James, of Paragould; grandchildren, Brad Moore, Lisa Moore, Linda Wallace, Melonie Hagood, Rhonda Jenkins, Jason Thompson, Jason Morris, Jamie Gunn and Nickolas James; great-grandchildren, Drake Wallace, Shalyn Wallace, Landen Hagood, Tory Jenkins, Lacie Jenkins, Laila Thompson and Sebastian Gunn; sister-in-law, Javene Johnson and husband Jack, of Pine Bluff, Ark.

Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2006, at the Heath Funeral Home Colonial Chapel.

Burial will follow at New Friendship Cemetery.

Robert 'Bobby' Edwards



Funeral services for Robert Melvin "Bobby" Edwards, 66, of Forrest City, formerly of Paragould and Rector, who died May 30, 2006, in St. Bernard's Medical Center, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Irby Funeral Home Chapel at Rector with Tim Wooldridge and Adrian Parker officiating.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Grace Ahlf Edwards; a sister, Ernestine McCartney; and an infant grandson, Jordan Robert Davison.

He is survived by his wife, Vonda Freeman Edwards of Paragould; children, Beverly Davison and husband Billy, Sondra Schaffer and Fernando Mora of California and Mark Edwards of California; four grandchildren, Justin, Jacob and Jared Davison and John Ross Schaffer; two brothers, Leslie Ellis Edwards of Memphis and Oral Winston Edwards of Forrest City; and two sisters, Eula Marie Legault of Richardson, Texas, and Cleatis Edwards Bowman of Las Vegas.

Interment will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Ted R. Ring



Ted R. Ring, 70, of Walnut Ridge died Wednesday, May 31, 2006.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Ring; a daughter, Kathy Staton; two stepdaughters, Sheila Baltz and Susan Whitehead; a stepson, Keith White; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Loren Ring and the Rev. Herman Ring; and two sisters, Juanita Smith and Dorothy Scott.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in First Assembly of God Church in at Walnut Ridge. Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery at Walcott under the direction of Cox-Waymon Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at First Assembly of God Church in Walnut Ridge.
