Melvin Bateman

Melvin “Junior” Bateman died peacefully in his sleep and went to his heavenly home on March 2. He was born Feb. 17, 1925, in Paragould. He married the love of his life, Winnie Daniels, in 1943, and the two celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary last October. In addition to Winnie, he is survived by his daughter, Sandra (Tom) Clark of Silex, Mo. , Dan (Barbara) Bateman of Atlanta, Ga.; and several grandchildren, Rodney (Dawn) Crosno of Valley Park, Mo., Steven Crosno of DeSoto, Mo., Jeffrey (Judy) Crosno of O’Fallon, Mo., Shawn, Jessica and Zach Bateman, all of Atlanta. He was a beloved and respected great-grandfather of Katelynn, Maegan and Jonathon Crosno, Courtney and Corbin Crosno, Danielle Crosno and Jacob and Samuel Bateman.

During his life, he worked in many fields. In 1953, he and Winnie moved to St. Louis where he was employed by General Motors and had a hand in making the first Chevrolet Corvettes. They moved back to Paragould in the mid-1950s to open the Bateman Circle Inn, a family dinner complete with carhops and rock-n-roll jukebox. When business flourished, he helped construct a new building to better accommodate all of the customers. He and Winnie also ran a roller skating rink across from the diner and even opened a second Circle Inn in Walnut Ridge because of the restaurant’s popularity. He also served as an ordained preacher at Tipperary Baptist Church in Tipperary during this time.

In 1961, he sold the businesses and he and the family moved back to St. Louis. He joined Carpenter’s Union Local 1596 and started working for Huttig Sash and Door, where he served as a shop steward for many years. He retired from Huttig Sash and Door in the mid-80s to help his son Dan with a new deck and landscaping businesses. He later returned to carpentry work at St. Louis Millworks until he retired one last time in 1999, after 47 years as a union carpenter.

He was laid to rest March 4 at Forever Bellerive Cemetry in Creve Coeur, Mo., during a private graveside service.

Though hearts are heavy, only joyful memories abound for this wonderful, loving man who knew the value of family, lead by example, and always made you smile.
