Donald Gene Spillman, 75, of Paragould, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Greene Acres Nursing Home in Paragould. He was born Nov. 2, 1928, in Greene County. He was the retired owner of Spillman Construction. He attended the Church of Christ, was a former Deacon of 7th and Mueller Church of Christ and drove a church bus for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Nora Spillman; his wife, Ernestine Spillman; two brothers, David and Alton Spillman; and one nephew, Kenneth Eugene Spillman. Survivors include one step-daughter and stepson-in-law, Lora and Phillip Swindle of Paragould; two nieces; two grandchildren, Devin Swindle of Pocahontas and Matthew Swindle of Paragould; and two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Elijah Swindle of Pocahontas. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel of Paragould with Bro. Phillip Swindle and Bro. Devin Swindle officiating. Burial will be at Pine Knott Cemetery of Paragould. Von K. Starnes, 88, of Blytheville, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his home. He was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Marmaduke and was a Blytheville resident for 54 years. He worked in the trucking industry as a terminal manager and was a member and former elder of the 13th and Main Church of Christ. He was also a founder of the Blytheville Little League and served as a Little League coach. He enjoyed woodworking and trains. He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude C. and Clara May Starnes; one daughter, Dorothy Jacqueline Starnes; and one half-sister, Alyene Foster. Survivors include his wife, Vestle Taylor Starnes of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Pat Allen of Tupelo, Miss., and Becky and Bruce Daniels of Blytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Leah Starnes of Clinton, Miss.; three half-sisters, Mozelle Benson of Blytheville and Nancy Higginbotham and Jean Beatty, both of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandsons, Scott Allen of Bakersfield, Calif., Ronny Allen of Tupelo, Danny Daniels of Atlanta, Ga., Bryce Daniels of Auburn, Ala., and Reed Starnes of Clinton.; and four great-grandchildren, Tia Allen of Tupelo, Caleb Daniels and Leighton Daniels, both of Auburn, and Cody Allen of Bakersfield. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Helen L. Smith, 80, of Garden City, Kan., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Haviland, Kan., the daughter of Glen and Erna Mae Plunkett Hecox. A resident of Garden City since 1994, moving from Liberal, Kan., she had been the owner and operator of both the Spudnut Shop and the Liberal Taxi Company for several years. She was a member of the First Church of God, where she served as youth director and was a past Brownie and Scout Leader, all of Liberal. She was married to Alvin R. Smith in Meade, Kan., on April 18, 1942. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Raymond Hecox; and one sister, Vera Cargill. She is survived by one son, Alvin Ross "Butch" Smith of Durango, Colo; two daughters, Glenda May Gramling of Paragould and Linda Lorraine Crain of Garden City; one brother, Vern Hecox of Tyrone, Okla.; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Price and Sons Funeral Home in Garden City with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Liberal Cemetery in Liberal. Martha Oneda "Sweet" Hampton, 84, of Rector, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. She was born July 26, 1919, in Rector. She was a beautician and a Sunday school secretary at First Baptist Church of Rector for several years, where she was a member. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Adelia Hampton; three brothers, Gaylon, Lewis and Doyle Hampton; and one sister, Pauline Smart. She is survived by three nieces, Cathy Williams of Fort Smith, Chris Sullivan of West Memphis and Karen Campbell of Memphis, Tenn.; three grand-nephews and four grand-nieces; and two special caretakers, Judy Leach and Gloria Brown of Rector. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Rector with the Rev. Ardell Polk and the Rev. Kenny Burns officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Heights Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home in Rector. Bishop Moler, 97, of Corning, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at his home. He was born July 8, 1906 in Peach Orchard. He was a farmer and a member of the Pentecostal church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Pence Moler; his parents, Luther and Lucinda Clayton Moler; one brother, Edgar Moler; and three sisters, Gladys Moler, Velva Moler, and Edith Reeves. Survivors include two sisters, Mary Moore and Ruth Adams, both of Pocahontas; and one brother, John Webster Moler of Qulin, Mo. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ermert Funeral Home Chapel in Corning with the Rev. Billy Snow officiating. Burial will be at Pirtle Cemetery in Peach Orchard under the direction of Ermert Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mary Richards, 72, of Corning, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. She was born Jan. 7, 1932, in Success. She was a CNA at Corning Nursing Home in Corning and attended the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Allen Richards; her parents, Edna Edwards and Elmer Foster; one sister, Lenora Vinson; and four brothers, Hulen Foster, Basil Foster, Cloyce Foster, and Utah Foster. Bea Cobb, 94, of Corning, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. She was born Jan. 8, 1910, in Corning. She was a homemaker and store clerk for Ben Franklin Store and Graber's Department Store. She attended the Grassylead Church of Christ in Corning. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Cobb; her parents, Albert and Lula Thomas Goodman; three brothers, Don Goodman, Charlie Goodman, and Herman Goodman; and three sisters, Iva Leonard, Myrtle Smith and Daisy Galemore. Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Campbell of Doniphan, Mo.; one brother, Carlos Goodman of Corning; two sisters, Pearlie Lincoln of Corning and Pauline Loyd of Rockford, Ill.; one granddaughter, Lesia Payne; and two great-grandsons, Trey Payne and Clay Payne. Donald Ralph DeMent, 60, of Lynchburg, Va., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, in San Bernardino, Calif. He was born Oct. 12, 1943, in Greene County. He was a truck driver with Englander Transport Co. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick Shaw and Lola Rhee DeVaul DeMent; three brothers, Charles DeMent, Fred DeMent and Joseph DeMent; and one sister, Junita D. Stewart. Harold Rhodes, 86, of Paragould, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. He was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Wayne County, Missouri. He was the retired owner of Rhodes Lumber Company and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Paragould and a former member of both the Paragould and Jackson, Tenn., Kiwanis Clubs. He was a former member of the draft board, the city planning commission and the community fund, and served as past president of the Arkansas Lumber Dealers Association. He was also one of the original organizers of the Paragould Little League baseball program and helped organize the Chamber of Commerce. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Rhodes; his parents, Charles Franklin and Alma Bennett Rhodes; and his brother, Paul Rhodes. Survivors include his wife, Mary Rhodes; two sons, Charles Rhodes of Paragould and Bob Manis of Mena; two daughters, Ann Mullis of Memphis, Tenn., and Kay Manis of Mena; two brothers, Clyde Rhodes of Jackson, Tenn., and Johnny Rhodes of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Frances Eloise Mangrum, 62, of Paragould, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, in Harrison. She was born March 14, 1941 in Craighead County. She was the office manager for Dr. Samuel Burchfield and attended the Commissary Church of Christ. She enjoyed fishing, camping and coon hunting. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Addie Mabry; and one sister, Daisy Hamilton. Survivors include her husband, Billy M. Mangrum of Paragould; one daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Doug Jackson of Harrison; one sister, Betty Ward of Mansfield, La.; and two grandchildren, Devon Jackson of Fayetteville and Carly Jackson of Harrison. Donald Allen "Sam" Pearce, 89, of Jonesboro, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was born Nov. 7, 1914, in Randolph County. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans and the First Free Will Baptist Church. He had lived in Jonesboro for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ada Merideth Pearce; three brothers, Clifford Pearce, Harold Pearce and Johnny Pearce; and two sister, Mildred Tyler and Hazel Masterson. Survivors include one brother, Hite Pearce of Paragould; five nieces and nephews residing in the Jonesboro area, Betty Watkins, Ernest Tyler, Judy Masterson, Gary Masterson and Charolett Seats; and eight nieces and nephews residing in other states. Christine Cates, 96, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Mineral Area Regional Medical Center in Farmington, Mo. She was born Feb. 3, 1908, in Pocahontas. She was a homemaker and loved to garden, paint and cook. She was an avid reader of the Bible and western novels and loved her grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Eva Beard; her husband, James Frank Cates; two sons, Roy Cates and John Cates; one granddaughter, Tammy Jean Cates; and one daughter-in-law, Mazie Cates. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Steward Kimball of Farmington, Mo.; four grandsons and their wives, Danny and Brenda Cates, Mark and Cathy Kimball, Keith and Carol Kimball and Kyle and Ellen Kimball; three granddaughters, Hassie, Vicky and Joyce; and several great-granddaughters. Betty Lucille Holland, 71, of McDonough, Ga., died Feb. 8, 2004, at Christian Ministries Hospice in Union City, Ga. She was born Jan. 10, 1933, in Greene County, the daughter of Racheal Smith and Emmitt Brandon. She is survived by her husband, Richard Dwight Holland of McDonough; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Kevin and Regina Holland of McDonough, and Richard and Margie Holland of Atlanta; and four grandchildren, Jordan, Allyson, James and John Holland. He was retired from City Light and Water in Piggott. He is a veteran and belonged to the Army National Guard. He was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudy Eugene and Sadie (Cochran) Romine; and one brother, Gaylon Romine. Survivors include his wife, Donna (Jones) Romine of the home; two sons, Steven Tomine and Bryan Romine, both of Piggott; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Jack Holifield and Hope and Danny Calhoun, all of Piggott; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Linda Romine of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Terry Romine; three grandchildren, Brad Holifield, Laura Holifield and Kindred McDaniel; one great-grandchild, Layton Holifield; and several nieces, nephews, family members and friends. He had retired from Commonwealth Edison Power Plant in Joliet, Ill., and was a member of Liberty Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his father, Artie Jefferson Cole. Dorris Edward Cox, 85, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at the Piggott Community Hospital. He was born May 1, 1918, near Greenway. He had been a resident of General Baptist Nursing Home for the past six years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Piggott since 1948. He was elected a deacon in 1952 and served in many capacities, including teacher in the television ministry and training union director. He was active in civic affairs, serving as city alderman for two terms, on the Piggott Park and Playground committee when "Face in the Crowd" was filmed, as a Lion's Club member 33 years, as a member of the Chamber of Commerce and as president of the Band Boosters Club in 1965 when the Piggott band marched in the Cotton Bowl Parade. He was a past president of the Piggott chapter of Gideons International and a member of the library board when the new library was built. He was instrumental in organizing the Jackson Street Mission Church, which became the current Emmanuel Baptist Church. He and three of his brothers formed a partnership to begin Cox Planing Mill and Lumber Co. in 1948 in Piggott. After the death of his brother, Doyle Cox, he became company president until he retired. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served on the U.S. President Johnson Liberty ship in the Pacific when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He participated in the initial invasion in the Philippines at Layte and at Okinawa. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Orley and Alda Henager Cox; and three brothers, Doyle Cox, Delbert Cox and Randall Cox. Survivors include his wife, Camilla Bricker Cox; one son and daughter-in-law, Alan D. and Bonnie Cox of Benton, La.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Judy Catherine and Michael Phillips of Dardanelle, and Carol Ann Cox of Piggott; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Neva Bradford of Campbell, Mo., and Genevieve and Hardin Hill of Greenway; one sister-in-law, Rilla Cox of Campbell, Mo.; two grandchildren, Larissa Cox and Kevin Cox, both of Fayetteville; and many nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be Thursday at the Piggott Mortuary with the Rev. Charles Carrens officiating. Burial will be in Piggott Cemetery under the direction of Irby Funeral Home of Piggott. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday.
Irene Fletcher, 71, of Senath, Mo., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Ed and Flora Rollins Reinhart; six brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include her husband, Henry Fletcher of Senath, Mo.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas and Mary Reinhart of Senath, Mo., Lonnie and Elaine Reinhart and Lloyd Nelson, all of Paragould; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Gene Nettles of Paragould, and Debbie and Charles Stark of Senath, Mo.; and one sister, Rachel Lebach of Paragould. Nova Edna Miller, 71, of Paragould, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould. She was born Nov. 23, 1932, in Piedmont, Mont. She was a homemaker and a member of Lake Street Baptist Church.
