Debbie Reed

 


Ms. Deborah Ann Reed, 59, of Corning, AR., passed away Monday, August 1, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould, AR. Ms. Reed was born January 7, 1952 in Rockford, IL. She was an L.P.N., she spent most of her nursing career working in Nursing Homes. She enjoyed playing Bingo, she was a member of the Knobel Church of Christ.

She is survived by her mother Erma (Childress) Hill of Knobel, AR.; two sons Les Tate and wife Valerie of Jonesboro, AR., Andy Tate and wife Holly of Batesville, AR.; daughter Royanna Reed of Corning, AR.; sister Colleen Tate of Knobel, AR.; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father Coldman Luttrell; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel with L.R. Smith officiating. Burial will follow the services in the Hosea Cemetery near Knobel, AR. Public visitation will be held Wednesday, August 3rd, 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Paula Jean Easton



Mrs. Paula Jean Easton, age 60 of Paragould passed away Friday, August 5, 2011, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro after an extended illness. Born June 24, 1951, in Paragould, she was the daughter of Rayburn and Betty Hahn Johnson and was a longtime Paragould area resident. She attended Greene County Tech School and was a homemaker. Mrs. Easton was an avid bowler and was very active in the ladies auxiliary and the VFW Post No. 2242, where she served as District 3 president.

She is survived by her mother, Betty Johnson of Paragould; three sons, Tim Easton and wife, Lena, of Marmaduke, Brian Easton and wife, Lisa, of Paragould and Jessie Easton and wife, Donna, of Portland, Ore.; two brothers, Gary Johnson of Paragould and Danny Johnson of Pine Bluff; six sisters, Rita Johnson, Rose Rogers, Debbie Mangrum, Sandy Brothers, Ruth Johnson and Donna Eaton, all of Paragould; five grandchildren, Dustin, Andrew and Emmy Lou Easton and Jade and Zackary Moore. Mrs. Easton also leaves a host of other family and friends.

Mrs. Easton was preceded in death by her father and her husband, Harold Easton.

Graveside services will be Sunday, August 7th, 11:00 a.m. at Greene County Memorial Gardens with Rev. Rudy Ring officiating.

Randy Joe Price
 


Randy Joe Price, 47, of Paragould, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. Born January 8, 1964 in Paragould, he was a Navy veteran and employed at Anchor Packaging. Mr. Price was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by one son, Brandon Price; one daughter; Bridgett Price; and one stepson, Bjorn Nielson, all of North Carolina. He is also survived by one brother, Todd Price; and his grandmother, Faye Thomas, both of Paragould.

He was preceded in death by his father, Colin Price; his mother and step-father, Anna Mae and Boyd Pickler.

Funeral services will be Thursday, August 11th, 1:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, Paragould, with John Bradshaw officiating. Burial will be private.

Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 noon until service time at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Edgar Verlin Russom



Edgar Verlin “E. V.” Russom, 85, of Paragould, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

Mr. Russom was born June 19, 1926 in Beech Grove and was a retired farmer. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Walcott Church of Christ.

Survivors include his loving wife, Aletta Russom of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Diane Russom of Beech Grove; and three brothers, M. A. Russom, Jerry Russom, and Ray Gene “Bub” Russom, all of Beech Grove. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Chris Russom and Elizabeth McClelland; and by two great grandchildren, Olivia and Isaac McClelland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Edgar and Cora Russom; and three sisters, Audrey Austin, Marie Gramling, and Geneva Koenig.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, 6:00 until 9:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 10th, 10:00 a.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel with Raymond Lasley and Darrell Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Greene County Memorial Gardens.

Rick Gramling, Billy Russom, Christopher Russom, Brandon Russom, Cody Russom, and Randy Russom will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Saffell, Bill and Nelda Mungle, and Ed and Kathy Monette.

Patsy Ann Straub



Patsy Ann Straub, 68, of Paragould passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was born February 7, 1943 in Kennett, Missouri.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Louie and Tommie Lee (Sloan) Edwards.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Straub; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie Liddell and Rodney Gramling of Paragould; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Lyn and Melanie Straub of Harrison, Ark. and Tim and Mandy Straub of Paragould; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joe and Kay Straub and Sandra Straub; eleven grandchildren, Krystal Wortham, Blake Gramling, Marissa Straub, Micah Straub, Melvin Straub, Tessa Gramling, Hailey Straub, Mallory Straub, Abbey Straub, Whitney Williams and Trystan Boone; five great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Maddison, Maci and Marcedes Dunlap and Lynli Lancaster along with many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, August 11th, 6:00 until 7:30 at Phillips Funeral Home.

Peter Don Sparks


Peter Don Sparks, 46, Paragould, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro. He was born July 26, 1965, in West Memphis, Arkansas the son of Martha McElroy Sparks and the late Woodrow “Woody” Sparks. Don worked at Post Cereal, formerly worked for AMMC Ambulance Service, was an Army Veteran and a member of Reynolds Baptist Church. He adored his family and loved animal rescue.

Survivors include his wife: Sonya Sparks; daughter: Gracie Danielle Sparks, both of the home, mother: Martha Sparks of Paragould, brothers: John Sparks of Ozark, MO and Frank Sparks of Memphis, TN.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated Friday, August 12th, 10:30 a.m. at the Heath Colonial Chapel, with Reverend David White officiating. Interment will follow at Linwood Cemetery.

Linda Lou McCormick



Linda Lou McCormick, 51, of Kennett, MO. passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born January 5, 1960, in Paragould, AR., daughter of Freda Killian McCormick and the late Woodrow McCormick, she worked in cleaning at a motel, and was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Kennett.

Survivors include three sons, Ronnie Nelson, Larry Lance and Robbie Lance, all of Kennett; one daughter, Lisa Estes and husband, Terry, of Kennett; her mother, Freda McCormick, of Kennett; four sisters, Wanda Lawless, Sandra Nelson, Brenda Cunningham and Donna Bogle, all of Kennett; 24 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jimmy, Ricky and Jeff McCormick and one grandchild, Jordan Martin.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00at Bradshaw Funeral Home in Kennett.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 12th, 1:00 p.m., at Bradshaw Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Johnny Bogle officiating.

Pallbearers are Ronnie Dale Smith, Terry Smith, Jeff Estes, Jeremy Wyrick, Richard McCaig and Chris Young.

Elmer Oran Grooms



Elmer Oran "Catfish" Grooms, 86, Oak Grove Heights, passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2011at Lakeshore Heartland Nursing Home in Nashville, TN with his family by his side. He was born April 28, 1925 the son of the late William Monroe "Mon" and Minnie Russom Grooms. He was also preceded in death by his wife, MaryBell Kappelman Grooms, son, Douglas Grooms, sisters, Bessie Wren, Mable Smith, Elva Hays, Mayo Garner, twin Zelma Crossno, Edith Friar, brothers, Lester and Jessie Grooms. He was the mayor of Oak Grove Heights from 1996-2002, a retired farmer and landowner and worked as a millwright on coal fire and nuclear power houses. He loved fishing and hunting. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law: Clarice Grooms of Nashville, TN; Kimberly and Donald Sinz of Hermitage, TN; Judy Grooms of Memphis, TN; grandchildren: Christopher Pierce, Marissa and Noah Sinz, Dusty and Tina Grooms, Jami and Sandy Grooms, Jeremy and Melissa Grooms; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated Saturday, August 13th, 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Brother Troy Mackey officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Phyllis Elenora Wilkinson



Phyllis Elenora Wilkinson, 69, Paragould passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2011at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was born June 21, 1942 in Delaplaine the daughter of the late Chacy Rudolph, Sr. and Mary Edith Rice Eveland. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Claire Vivian Wyatt. She was an Elementary School Principal at Delaplaine for 31 years and a member of Delaplaine Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband: William Edward Wilkinson of the home; daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Christina and James Edward Lewis of Dalton, Lacey Shayann and John Robert Wyatt, Jr. of Memphis, TN; son and daughter-in-law: Steven Joseph and Mary Lee Wilkinson of Paragould; sisters: Christina Marie French of Pocahontas, Darlyne Evelyn Paulsen of North Little Rock; brothers: Chacy Rudolph Eveland, Jr. of Burlington, CT, Solomon Lee Rex Eveland and Randall Wayne Eveland both of Pocahontas; Roger Ray Eveland of Imboden; step-brothers: Howard Rice of Phoenix, AZ, Ralph Rice of St Louis, MO, Bill Rice of Pocahontas; special nieces: Gay Carter of Pocahontas, Sherry Staber of Texas; grandchildren: Stacy Rae Lewis and Autumn Rachelle Lewis both of Conway, Casey Edward Lewis of Dalton.

She was born on December 30, 1955, in Rector, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Albertine Smith Gunn; grandson, Tyler Ray Saylors, brother, Darvin Riggs; and sister, Norma Jean Morgan.

She is survived by her sons, David Allen Wyatt and wife Julie and Richard James Wyatt all of Paragould, Arkansas; daughter, Tammie Jean Fletcher and husband Jason Akes of Marmaduke, Arkansas; her parents, Oscar and Carol Gunn of Piggott, Arkansas; four grandchildren: Kaley Ann Russell, David Allen Wyatt, Jr., Savanah Drew Fletcher, and Jaxsen Cane Akes; three brothers: Dallas Gunn and wife Vickie of Rector, Arkansas, Mike Gunn and wife Trish of Paragould, Arkansas, and Chris Gunn of Rector, Arkansas; sister, Billie Sue Baldwin and husband Cletus of Piggott, Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Wilma Joyce Newberry Stovall


Wilma Joyce Newberry Stovall passed away Saturday August 13, 2011, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ruth Cato, her husband of 40 years, Wilborn Newberry and her husband of 15 years, Robert Stovall all of Paragould.

She is survived by her five children: Phyllis Liversiedge of Southaven, MS, James L. Newberry and wife Becky of Little Rock, AR, Wilborn Newberry, Jr. of Paragould, Janet Taylor and husband Steve of Ann Arbor, MI and Carol Phillips and husband Stan of Paragould.
Wilma Joyce had seven grandchildren: Michelle Phillips of Paragould, Robert E. Elam of Hoover, AL, Will Newberry of Little Rock, Rachel, Becca, and Molly Taylor of Ann Arbor, MI and Cameron Phillips of Paragould; four great grandchildren, Anna and Claire Phillips of Paragould and Alex and Zach Elam of Hoover, AL. She also leaves her sister, Pat Gregory of Paragould, now living in Owensboro, KY.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 16th, 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Heath Funeral Home, followed by graveside services at 12:00 p.m. in Center Hill Cemetery.

Flora Mae DeMent
 



Flora Mae DeMent, 93, of Paragould passed away peacefully Saturday, August 13, 2011 in Keosauqua, IA., with family at her bedside. She was born February 23, 1918 in Bertig, AR the daughter of the late Clarence Jackson "Bud" and Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzy" Cupp. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Patric Shaw DeMent, step-children, Fred DeMent, Raymond DeMent, Juanita Stewart, Charles Leadow DeMent, Joseph DeMent, Donald DeMent, brother, James Cupp, sisters, Wava Campbell, Lucy Prince.
She married Patric Shaw DeMent on December 11, 1948 in Powhatan, AR. She lived most of her life in Paragould, AR, Buena Park, CA and Fair Oaks, CA. She moved to Douds, Iowa in 2009.

She is survived by her children: Patrick Dale (Katie) DeMent of Mountain Home, AR; Loretta (David) Bresler of Malibu, CA; Glenn (Helga) DeMent of Riverside, CA; Faye Williams of Iowa City, CA; Regina (David) Southard of Pioneer, CA; Zelda Ingle of Sacramento, CA; Reba (Christopher) Best of Kauai, HI; Iris DeMent (Greg Brown) of Douds, IA; 39 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Verne Wesley Ellis
 


Verne Wesley Ellis, 92, of Paducah, KY, formerly of Paragould, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY. He was born March 8, 1919 in Greenleaf, WI. to the late Bertha Russell Dishneau and Walter Eldridge Ellis. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, Allen Boren and siblings, Natalie, Russell and Muriel.
He was a retired welder, retired security guard, involved in DAV and VFW, enjoyed woodworking and his family. He was a member of Twelve Oaks Baptist Church in Paducah and was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church when he lived in Paragould. Mr. Ellis served his country during World War II in the Army as a member of the 32nd Red Arrow Division, serving in both the Papuan Campaign and the New Guinea Campaign. He was injured in Buna, New Guinea and earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with two bronze stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Distinguished Unit Badge, a Purple Heart, and Bronze Star.

He is survived by the mother of their children: Verna Merle Sanders of Paragould; his children and their spouses: Mary Boren of Paragould, Walter Frank and Sudjai Ellis of Jonesboro, Robert and Allison Ellis of Long Beach, MS., Gary Ellis of Paragould and Cheryl and Mark Fields of Paducah, KY; sister: Shirley Fuller of Sussex, WI., 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren; and eleven great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated Wednesday, August 17th, 10:00 a.m. at Heath Funeral Home at Rev. Paul Bean officiating.

Arthur Kersey
 



Mr. Arthur “Cleatus” Kersey, 88, of Paragould, AR., passed away Monday, August 15, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, Paragould, AR. Mr. Kersey was born September 19, 1922 in Clay County, AR. He was a farmer and of the Christian faith.

He married his wife Loetta (Hill) Kersey on September 11, 1945. She preceded him in death in 1985.

He is survived by one son Jerry Kersey of Paragould, AR.; four daughters Faye Warner of Paragould, AR., Diane Holt of Marmaduke, AR., Peggy Walker of Paragould, AR., Elva Lynxwiler of Jonesboro, AR.; one sister Christine Small of Corning, AR.; 15 grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Loetta Kersey; his parents Walter and Altia (Kessler) Kersey; six sons Norman, Freddie, Rickey, Darrell, and Steven Kersey; two daughters Margie and Barbara Kersey; three brothers Roy, Frank, and Harvey Kersey; and one sister Maxine Small.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, August 18th, 1:00 p.m. in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel with Marlin Ray officiating. Burial will follow at Providence Cemetery near Lafe, AR.
Public visitation will be Wednesday evening, August 17th, 6:00 until 9:00.

Dr. Gerald B. Dickinson



Dr. Gerald B. Dickinson, 67, of Paragould, passed away Monday, August 15, 2011, at his residence. He was born March 4, 1944 in Harrisburg.

Dr. Dickinson received his B.A. from Arkansas Tech University where he was a four year letterman in football and two year letterman in track and field; and his advanced degrees from Arkansas State University and the University of Arkansas.

Dr. Dickinson served the educational profession for thirty-nine years as a teacher, coach, and an administrator in Arkansas public schools and as a professor in higher education in the Department of Educational Leadership, Curriculum, and Special Education at Arkansas State University. In addition, he was the Director of the Office of Educational Research and Services at ASU and was instrumental in planning and implementing ASU’s first doctoral program, the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership..

Prior to his career at ASU, Dr. Dickinson taught at DeWitt, Lee County, and Westside; served as principal at Parkin, and Mountain Home; assistant superintendent at Mountain Home and superintendent at Greene County Tech.

He was a charter member of the Arkansas Professors of Educational Administration, member of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration, a lifetime member of the Arkansas Activities Association and a ten year trustee of the Greene County Library. He was a member of the 7th and Mueller Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Dickinson of Paragould; one son and daughter-in-law, Bart and Leslie Dickinson of Little Rock; and one daughter, LeAnn Dickinson of Jonesboro. Survivors also include two brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles and Sharon Dickinson of Benton, and Byron Dickinson of Lead Hill; one sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Danny Goodwin of DeWitt; and three grandchildren, Blake, Parker and Graham Dickinson of Little Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jewel Dickinson.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening 6:00 until 8:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 18th, 1:30 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, with Larry McFadden officiating. Burial will follow in Gracelawn Cemetery.at Tuckerman.

Michael Ray Fox



Michael Ray Fox, 27, of Paragould passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2011. He was born May 26, 1984 in Blytheville, AR. to Mitchell and Christina Atchley. Michael loved music, singing and dancing with his daughter.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Daisy Martin; one niece, Desire Boucher and grandfather, Clifton Atchley.

Survivors include his parents; daughter, Alivia Michelle Fox, step daughter, Mckenzie Worsham, step-mother, Tosha Atchley; grandmother, Shirley Riley and William fox; four brothers, Mitchell Troy Atchley Jr., Justin Ross Atchley, Shannon Lynn Atchley all of Paragould and Troy Allan Atchley of Leachville; four sisters, Michelle Renee Atchley of Paragould, Janet Nicole Atchley of Manila, Savannah Leann Torrens and Stephanie Marie Atchley both of Leachville, one aunt, Rhonda Tomblin and uncles, aunts and cousins. All his cousins, nieces and nephews will miss him terribly.

Alta Fern Johnson



Alta Fern Johnson, 78, formerly of Paragould, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2011, in Middletown, MO. She was born January 5, 1933.

She is survived by her husband, Roy C. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Eli and Lena Gertrude Smith; stepfather, Roy Haney; sister, Charlotte Bredensteiner; stepsister, Viola Wadley; and brothers, James Paul Smith, Rufus LeeDell Smith and Carter Montel Smith.

Arrangements have been made with Baue Funeral and Memorial Center, 3950 W. Clay St., St. Charles, Mo. Visitation will be Saturday, Aug. 27th, 12:00 noon until 4:00 p.m. funeral services will follow at 4:00. Burial will be at a later date in New Friendship cemetery in Paragould, AR.

Douglas Wade Leggett, Sr



Douglas Wade Leggett, Sr., 63, of Gosnell, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould, AR. Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama to James and Evelyn Smelley Leggett, he was a truck driver, retiring from FedEx and was of the Baptist faith. Doug loved to spend time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing and going out to shoot his pistols and shotguns. He was a devoted husband, father and "Paw Paw".

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Sidney Leggett and William Lawrence Leggett.

His wife, Shirley Diane Leggett of Gosnell; children, Doug Leggett, Jr. and his wife Tina of Damascus, AR, Kenneth Leggett and his wife Tanya of Greenbriar, AR, David Leggett and his wife April of Jonesboro, AR; sisters, Shirley Laster and her husband Jay of Jonesboro, AR and Peggy Copeland and her husband, Hershel of Cooter, MO; grandchildren, Colby Leggett, Brenna Leggett, Grace Leggett, Samantha Burnett, Taylor Burnett, Gary Hall, Erica Hall and Austin Hitchcock and one great grand child, Nevaeh Burnett, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends, all survive him.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, August 21st, 3:30 p.m. at Number 8 Cemetery near Cooter, MO, with Rev. Gary Hyde officiating. The family will receive friends, Sunday afternoon, 2:00 until 2:30 at Cobb Funeral Home.

Iona “Louise” Strope Dennington, 76, went to be her Lord and Savior August 19, 2011. She was born in the Finch Community of Greene County, March 29, 1935. She was a homemaker and a member of Finch Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mid Ola Strope; one son, Darrell Myrick; one grandson, Jamie Myrick; brothers, Mack and Curtis Strope, and by a special niece, Joan Stevens.

She is survived by two sons, Walter and Jim Myrick, both of Paragould; two daughters, Carolyn Shands, and Marilyn and her husband, Muriel White all of Paragould; three brothers, Junior, Donald, and Jerry Strope, all of Paragould, and by twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and several special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Monday, August 22nd, 2:00 p.m. at Finch Baptist Church with nephews, Dennis and Larry Strope officiating. Burial will be in Finch Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home.

Dixie Arline Blankenship, 74, of West Memphis, AR, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011 at her residence. Mrs. Blankenship was born October 22, 1936. She was a retired bookkeeper for the West Memphis School District.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in West Memphis, formerly Ingram Blvd. Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lidell Elmer Blankenship and her parents, Sanford & Arline Rose.

She was born April 9, 1965 in Osceola, AR. the daughter of the late William Hardy and Geneva Mae Goforth Floyd, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William H. Floyd.
She was a homemaker and of Baptist belief.

Paulett Stafford, 54, of Bono, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2011, at St Bernard’s Medical Center in Jonesboro. She was born April 8, 1957 in San Bernadino, California the daughter of the late Paul Nathaniel and Ruby Thornton Chappel. She was also preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Dewayne Stafford. Paulett was of Baptist belief and employed as a cashier at Wal Mart.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Stafford, of the home; daughter, April Crow of Paragould; brothers: Bobby Joe and Thomas Chappel; grandchildren: Landen Crow, Brent Crow, Daniel Cross, Stacey Onsttot, and Jeff Ward.

Ray Joe Distretti



Ray Joe Distretti, 89, of Paragould, passed away Monday, August 22, 2011, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center. He was born September 19, 1921, in Memphis, TN the son of the late Giovanni Battista and Maria Beltrami Distretti. Ray was a truck patch farmer before moving his family from Memphis in 1956. He made his first crop of grain in Greene County in 1957 starting with 240 acres.

Ray was a founding member of the Italian Market at age 19 in Memphis. He was a member of the Greene County Tech School Board 1969-74, Craighead Electric Coop Director 1975-84, Director and Vice Chairman Federal Land Bank Association for 22 years from 1967-89, He and his family were farm family of the year in 1966, President of Greene County Farm Bureau Board, member of the Stanford Coop Board. He was also preceded in death by his wife Florence Mozella Gatlin Distretti, 6 sisters and 5 brothers. He was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

He is survived by his son: Johnny (Jannie) Distretti of Paragould; daughter: Sandy "Ikey" Distretti and husband, Gordon Meyer of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; grand daughters: Ashley and Casey Distretti and great-grandson: Jaren Ray Wooley, all of Paragould, as well as several nieces and nephews and a multitude of family and friends.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Heath Funeral Home. His life will be celebrated Thursday, August 25th, 10:30 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, with Revs. Raymond Atwood and Kenneth Overton officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Traeson Daniel Moon, 17 months, went to be with our Lord Monday, August 22, 2011 at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. He was born March 4, 2010 in Poplar Bluff, MO. to Ashley Box and Wesley Moon.

Marilee Taylor Pruit

Marilee Taylor Pruitt, 89, of Jonesboro, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at her home. She was born August 18, 1922 in Paragould and lived there until moving to Jonesboro in 1936 and was a member of the Greensboro Road Church of Christ. Marilee was a devout teacher, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was an avid JHS sports fan and a member of the JHS Class of 1940. As a sports fan, Marilee, never missed a JHS home basketball game in 28 years and was present for the State Championships won in 1962, 1994, and 2007. Marilee graduated from Arkansas State with her BSE in 1957 and also worked on her post graduate studies. She retired as a public school teacher and enjoyed her time teaching at Oak Grove Schools from 1942 until 1943; Valley View Schools for ten years and at North School in Jonesboro for 24 years until her retirement in 1989. After retirement she enjoyed her time spent with the North School Classics (Retired teachers).

She was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Cecil Taylor and one daughter, Rhonda Renee Pruitt.

Survivors are her husband of 68 years, Lloyd Pruitt; son, Barry Lee Pruitt and wife Billie; daughter, Barbara Elaine Hall and husband Dr. Ray all of Jonesboro; one brother, Dr. Trice Taylor of Charlottesville, Virginia; grandchildren, Michael Pruitt, Casey Higgins, Matt Pruitt, Taylor Pruitt, Dr. Heather Coleman, Holly Hall and Colin Hall; great grandchildren, Morgan Pruitt, Shelby Pruitt, Landon Higgins, Laney Higgins, Amelia Coleman and Ethan Byars.

Graveside services will be Thursday, August 25th, 11:00 a.m. at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with Terry Jo Kee officiating and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Omer E. Bradsher



Dr. Omer E. Bradsher, formerly of Paragould, 81, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at his home in Senath, MO. He was born October 7, 1929 in Little Rock, AR the son of the late Omer Ethridge, Sr. and Ida Carpenter Bradsher. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Howerton Bradsher, brother, Robert Bradsher, sisters, Martha Joffe and Betty Montgomery. He practiced family medicine in the Paragould area for over 40 years. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Arkansas Medical School in Little Rock in 1958. His undergraduate education was completed at Hendrix College. Dr. Bradsher served his community at the local, state, and national levels. In the 1960's, he was heavily involved in both gubernatorial and presidental elections. He served as a delegate to the 1968 Republican National Convention. In the 80's and 90's, he served on the Greene County Quorum Court. Dr. Bradsher's wisdom and compassion reached many lives. His patients, co-workers and friends were all touched by his guidance and care. In his later years, his most cherished moments in his career were caring for homebound patients in their homes. He was a dedicated family man, a devout Christian, and was extremely proud of his birthplace and heritage. He was a U.S. Marine veteran and a member of First United Methodist Church in Senath.

He is survived by his wife: Barbara Bradsher of the home; children: Brad Bradsher of Little Rock, AR; Todd Bradsher of Peach Orchard, AR; Julia Bradsher of Kalamazoo, MI; Jana Bagwell of Vicksburg, MS; Regina Franks of Bastrop, LA; Randal Gibson of Senath, MO; Vickie Moylan of Paragould, AR; sister: Lucie Smith of Naples, Florida; special cousin, Freddie Webb Graham-Eller, fifteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

William Willis
 


William Willis, 82, of Lafe, AR. passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at his home.

Born August 20, 1929, in Flint, MI. Mr. Willis was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He retired after working as a plumber and pipefitter in Little Rock, and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Willis and wife, Virginia, of Lafe, and Terry Willis of Walnut Ridge; one brother, Jim Willis of Lafe; and two sisters, Gay Thomas of Lafe, and Sandra Thiel of Paragould. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Flynn Willis and wife, April, of Paragould, Crystal Willis of Lafe, Heith Willis and wife, Kelli, and Holly Gunn, all of Paragould; two step-grandchildren, Amber Bagwell and Amanda Spinks, both of Conway; and by six great grandchildren, Avery Willis, Matthew and Josh Gunn, Karter, Kooper and Kyler Willis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Bessie Willis; his wife, Martha Louise Willis; and one brother, Jerry Willis.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

George Leon Weaver
 



George Leon Weaver, 85, of Paragould, passed away Thursday, August 25, 2011, at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro. He was born November 30, 1925 in Paragould, to Allen and Minnie Weaver.

He was a retired farmer, grocery store owner and brick mason. He was a lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. Mr. Weaver enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and being with his family.

He served his country in the Army as a member of the occupying forces of Japan, going to Hiroshima shortly following the end of World War II. He also served on the Oak Grove School Board for 10 years, serving as President during part of that time.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Crystal Weaver of the home; two sons, Mike Weaver of the home, and Kent Weaver and his wife, Lorri of Jonesboro; one daughter, Lynne Whitmire and husband, Jesse of Sulphur Rock, Arkansas; and one sister, Dorothy Nutt of Paragould. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Carrie Whitmire, Eric Weaver and Cameron Weaver; one step grandson, Tyler Hooks; and by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hershel Weaver and Melvin Weaver; two sisters, Mira Lockwood and Earlene Napier; and by one granddaughter, Lora Elizabeth Whitmire.

Visitation will be Saturday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Funeral services will be Sunday, August 28th, 2:30 p.m. at Shiloh United Methodist Church with David Swift and Emmett Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.

Emil Harold Smelser

 


Emil “Peaberry” Harold Smelser, 78 passed away Saturday August 27, 2011 in Walnut Ridge. He was born June 17, 1933 in Lafe, AR. to Willard and Minta Cooper Smelser. He had lived in Lawrence County most of his life, was self-employed as a plumber and a member of the Main Street Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by wife, Shirley Smelser of the home; sons, Kevin Smelser and Melissa, Kyle Smelser and wife Michelle all of Walnut Ridge; four grandchildren, Alexa Gann and husband Nathan of Ravenden, Jerimy Smelser and Crystal, Drake Smelser and Maci Smelser all of Walnut Ridge and two great grandchildren, Cooper Smelser and Bailey Mashburn.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, 5:00 until 8:00 at the Main Street Church of Christ in Walnut Ridge.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 31st,10:00 a.m. at the Main Street Church of Christ in Walnut Ridge with Rob Combs and Ed Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Lawrence Memorial Park under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home of Walnut Ridge.

Pallbearers: Rex Hart, Jim Pominville, Button Wallin, Nathan Crafton, Chris Tate and Lester Herring.

Honorary: J.R. Rogers, John Fears, Bob Moody, Richard “ChooChoo” Owens, Jewell Woodson, Don Sluder, A.J. Henry, Ryan Saulsbury, Ben Purdue and Dennis Coggins.

Samuel Eugene Mason

 



Samuel Eugene Mason, 41, of Paragould, passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center.

He was born September 1, 1969 in Paragould, to Jimmie Levi and June Mason. He did home improvement work.

Survivors include his wife, Jodi Mason of the home; his mother, June Mason of Marmaduke; seven sons, Dalton Emery , Dillyn Hughes, Mark King, and Samuel Mason, all of Paragould, and Dustin Mason, Justin Mason, and Austin Mason, all of Poplar Bluff, MO., and four daughters, Natasha Mason, Kayla Mason, and Kristina Mason, all of Poplar Bluff, and Holly Mason of Paragould.

He is also survived by four brothers, Jessie Mason, and Tony Mason, both of Marmaduke, Joey Mason of Rector, and Johnny Mason of Paragould. Other survivors include seven sisters, Mary Mason of Michigan, Lana Henson, Brenda Johnson, and Glenda Riggs, all of Paragould, Judy Haneline, Deborah Mason, and Maudie Moore, all of Marmaduke; and by one grandchild, Zoey Brinkman of Poplar Bluff.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Levi Mason.

Graveside services will be Friday, September 2nd, 1:30 p.m. at Hartsoe Cemetery, Marmaduke, with Chad Robinson officiating. Visitation will be Friday prior to services, 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Wanda Diane Roley
 


Wanda Diane (Henson) Roley 58, of Stewardson, IL. passed away Monday August 29, 2011 in her home.

She was born May 24, 1953 in Paragould, AR, the daughter of Bob and Marie Crockett Henson.

Diane married Dale Gene Roley June 12, 1971 he passed away April 22, 2008.

Prior to Dale’s passing, she loved to ride “Ole Red”, their Gold Wing. She was a member of the Gold Wing Club.

Most of all, she loved her Family and cherished her grandchildren.

Surviving are her sons Aaron Roley and wife Elaine and Quentin Roley and girl friend Lena both of Stewardson; eight grandchildren: Dylan, Cassie, Michel, Ronnie, Baby Q, Little Dylan, Courtney and Cody; brothers: Bobby Henson and wife Jackie, Archie Henson and wife Lynn, Alfred “Colonel” Henson and wife Debbie and Gary “Giggy” Henson and wife Jina, all living in Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dale, her parents and brothers Dorsey and Alton Henson.

Graveside services will be Friday September 2nd, 11:00 a.m. in Stewardson Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday evening, 6:00 until 8:00 in Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson.
Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Emma Lois Gifford



Emma Lois Gifford, 74, of O'Kean, passed away August 30, 2011, at her home.

Born May 22, 1937, in Tilton, she had lived in Lawrence County most of her life and was a member of O'Kean Free Will Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Isam W. Gifford; her parents, James and Edith Boling Sisco; four brothers, Billy Joe Sisco, Dan Sisco, Elmo Sisco and Coy Sisco; a sister, Minnie Huffman; and a grandchild, Joshua Curtis Gifford.

Survivors include a daughter, Carmen McElhaney and husband Donald, O'Kean; five sons, Paul Gifford and wife Kathryn, Heber Springs, Marvin Gifford and Danny Gifford and wife Donna, all of O'Kean, Billy Gifford and wife Patricia, Byhalia, Miss., and Homer Gifford and wife Sherry, Hardy; two sisters, Edith Ragsdell, Walnut Ridge, and Sletty Haynes, O'Kean; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Friday, September 2nd, 2:00 p.m. at Lorado Cemetery, near Walcott, with Aaron Winfrey officiating. House-Gregg Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be James Gifford, John Paul Allred, Matthew Gifford, Justin Gifford, Ryan Gifford and Wes Gifford. Honorary pallbearers will be Isam Gifford, Noah McElhaney, Daniel Gifford and Jason Gifford.

Dorothy Southerly
 



Dorothy Southerly, 81, of Marmaduke passed away Tuesday August 30, 2011 at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

Born March 5, 1930, Mrs. Southerly was a homemaker who enjoyed crochet, gardening, and fishing. She was of the Baptist faith.

On December 21, 1946 she was united in marriage to William Southerly in Corning. He preceded her in death on April 3, 1997.

Survivors include two sons Albert Southerly of Marmaduke and David Southerly of Piggott; three daughters Willa Dean Champney of Estes Park, CO., Betty Niceschwander of Lamar, CO., and Rose L. Mooneyhan of Lafe; 18 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Southerly; son William H. Southerly; two daughters Barbara Ann Southerly and Elizabeth Bailey; parents Troy and Edna Miller; brothers, Elmer and Roy Miller; sisters Ethel and Sylvie; and a grandson Justin Southerly.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 3rd, 2:00 p.m. at the Ermert Funeral Home in Corning with Rev. Kim Bridges officiating. Burial will follow in Ramer’s Chapel Cemetery near Marmaduke.

Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
