Katherine Carner
Virginia Katherine Carner, 80, of Paragould died Thursday, April 12, 2001,
at Greene Acres Nursing Home in Paragould.
She was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Dell. She was a longtime resident of the
Blytheville area. She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Baptist
Church at Half Moon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Porter and Willie Eva
French Smith; her husband, H.M. Carner; and one brother.
Survivors include two sons, Phill Carner and Eddie Carner, both of
Paragould; two daughters, Jean Underwood of Marmaduke and Ellen Self of
Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Marie Travis of Lewisburg, Tenn.; 11
grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Tuesday at Cobb Funeral Home in Blytheville with the
Rev. Kim Bridges officiating. Burial was at the Elmwood Cemetery. Elvis
Franklin Campbell
Elvis Franklin Campbell, 87, of Paragould died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at
Paragould Nursing Center.
He was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Greene County. He was retired from Missouri
Pacific Railroad and was a World War II Army veteran. He was also a member
of the First Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Franklin and Jane Bell
Lacewell Campbell; his first wife, Gladys Ann Campbell; and his second wife,
Ola Mae Cook Campbell.
Survivors include a son, Gary Campbell of Corona, Calif.; four stepsons,
Howard Cook Jr., Russell Cook, and David Cook, all of Jonesboro and Robert
J. Cook of California; a stepdaughter, Kay Gibson of Jonesboro; a
granddaughter, Tammy K. Higgins of Westminster, Calif.; and three
great-grandchildren, Brittney, Kendel and Madelyn.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wood's Chapel Cemetery
with Kenny Crafton officiating.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 this evening at Mitchell Funeral Home in
Paragould.
The funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 12:40 p.m. Thursday.
Patricia
Lynn Spencer
Patricia Lynn Spencer, 46, of Paragould died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at
Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould.
She was born Feb. 11, 1955, in Rosiclare, Ill. She was a homemaker and
member of Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rufus Garvin; her mother, Martha
Warren Garvin Newsom; a sister, Judy Lee Garvin; and two infant brothers.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry L. Spencer of Paragould; a son, Jerry
Wayne Smith of Paragould; two daughters, Tammy Lynn Smith of Trumann and
Christina Dawn Smith of Jonesboro; two stepsons, Kerry Spencer and Robbie
Spencer, both of Paragould; two stepdaughters, Tes Loften and Nina Spencer,
both of Paragould; a brother, Joseph Allen Newsom of Bryant; two sisters,
Janet Elaine Arant of Paragould and Corrine Ann Belt of Sheridan; two
grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mitchell Funeral Home in
Paragould with Richard Tinsley officiating. Burial will be at Wood's Chapel
Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kerry Spencer, Robbie Spencer, Chad Hall, Lonnie Arant,
John Newsom and Richard Poe.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
John "Hamp"
Thurman
John "Hamp" Thurman, 85, of Paragould died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at John
J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
He was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Gainesville. He was the author of his own
biography, "Walking With Jesus." He was a retired farmer and World War II
Army veteran serving in the South Pacific. He was also a member of First
Assembly of God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie J. and Alice Elizabeth Cole
Thurman; a sister, Lila Belle Nunally; and a brother, Robert W. Thurman.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Thurman of Paragould; a son, Dr. David
Thurman, O.D of Hanover, Penn.; a daughter, Pam Thurman of Paragould; a
granddaughter, Heather Thurman of Hanover; a grandson, Michael Thurman of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; four nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Heath Funeral Home in Paragould
with the Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial will be at Greene County
Memorial Gardens in Paragould.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
