demands that different kinds of goods shall be kept under one roof, thereby effecting a
great saving in time and money and rendering shopping comparatively easy and pleasant.
Nowhere in this section of the country is this idea better exemplified than in the mammoth
establishment of the S.L. Joseph Mercantile Company at Paragould. This is one of the
largest, best equipped, most completely stocked and most liberally patronized department
stores between Memphis and St. Louis, and is equally a credit to its owners as well to the
city. They are dealers in dry goods, clothing, men women and children's furnishings and shoes, hats, caps, millinery, staple and fancy groceries, farm supplies, farm implements, light hardware, wagons, buggies, etc. The main building, which occupies a convenient site right in the heart of the retail section of the city, is 125x100 feet in dimension and two stories in height. They also utilize two large warehouses for the storage of surplus and heavy goods. The fixtures installed in this large establishment are of the most modern type, and each department is in charge of one or more competent and obliging clerks. In all departments they furnish regular employment to about 40 people. This business was originally founded more than 40 years ago by the late S. L. Joseph, who was one of the pioneer merchants of the city, who aided materially toward the early developement of this community. The company was incorporated about ten years aago and has for it's officers and directors, Joseph Wolf, President; A. Samuel, Vice-President; and Henry Mueller, Secretary and Treasurer. All of whom are well and favorably know in this section and stand justly high in business, financial and social realms of the community. SMITH LONG Quick to adopt any plan that has a tendency to improve, and with a sincere desire to please his patrons, this well known establishment, which stands as one of the leading retail grocery and provision stores, has developed a trade of which the management has every reason to feel proud. Occupying a brick structure 50x60 feet in size at the corner of Court and Third Streets, and carrying a stock which for quality and general excellence cannot be excelled anywhere, Mr. Long has gained the fullest confidence of the public, and numbers among his patrons many of the best families in the city. Everything commonly found in the best of establishments of a similar nature is carried here and prompt delivery service and reasonable prices are distinctive features of the store. An auto truck is utilized for making deliveries. Mr. Long has been connected with this line in Paragould for about 20 years and is one of the best known citizens in the county. He owns the two story brick building at the above address, the second story of which is utilized as the local Masonic Temple. Mr. Long is among the most substantial businessmen of the city and has always done his share toward the developement of Paragould and vicinity. He is assisted in the management of the business by his son, C. A. Long, another one of our hustling and progressive citizens. HICKSON-ROGERS MANUFACTURING CO. Many departments of industrial life are well represented in and the activity of the city and many of the lines have been particularly noticeable in the past few years. In looking over a list of the commercial activities that are represented here, one is forcibly reminded of the progressiveness of our men of affairs. A resume of the representative interests of Paragould would be incomplete without liberal mention of Hickson-Rogers Manufacturing Company, extensive manufacturers of Split Hickory Dowel Pins, Club Turned Oak and Hickory Spokes, Wagon Single Trees and Neck Yokes and Short Ash Dimension Stock. This is one of the city's foremost industrial enterprises. The plant is located on a convenient site in the southern section of the city, on the tracks of the Cotton Belt Railway, and together with the yards and shed covers an area of about four acres. Besides the plant here, they also have a large branch plant at Jonesboro, ARK., which covers about three acres and is located on the tracks of the Frisco and J. L. C. & E. Rys. All of their products are made of timber from the native forests, being shipped in from the surrounding country within a radius of about 100 miles. This is one of the pioneer manufacturing industeries of Paragould, having been in operation approximately fifteen years, and during that time has done much toward the upbuilding of the city and vicinity. The officers of the concern are numbered among the most broad gauge, far seeing and progressive businessmen in this section and stand justly high in the commercial marts of the country. They are, J. C. Hickson, president; E. L. Hickson, vice-president; and E. H. Borneman, secretary and treasurer. The first and last named gentleman are local citizens, while E. L. Hickson resides at Jonesboro and has charge of the plant in that city. THE NATIONAL BANK OF COMMERCE There is no factor of equal importance is promoting the general business welfare of a community as first-class banking facilities, and in this respect Paragould is particularly fortunate. Among the sound and progressive banks in this city, officered by men whose business abilitiy, integrity and responsibility are of a high order, special mention is due The National Bank of Commerce, the strongest financial instituation, which offers so many advantages to its patrons. The National Bank of Commerce has had a remarkable record of expansion from the period of its organization seventeen years ago. This instituation transacts a general banking business in all of its branches. It is equipped with ample fire and bugular proof safes and vaults and depositors money is other wise fully protected from loss through any cause whatsoever. It has a capito; stock of $100,000.00; surplus and profits $153,000.00 and carries hundreds of thousands of dollars of deposits year in and year out. The officers are among the most capable, reliable and progressive business men of this section and its directors and stockholders comprise some of the wealthiest and most influential citizens of the county. The officers are: Eli Meiser, president; J.D. Block, vice-president; R.W. Meriwether, vice-president; H.W. Woosley, cashier and O.H. Virgin, assistant cashier. The directorate is composed of Eli Meiser, W.F. Kirsh, J.D. Block, T.B. Kitchens, L.U. Stedman, R.W. Meriwether, R.C. Gizzard, Joe Wolf, H.W. Woosley, W.T. Stedman, A.W. Jackson, and J.G. Meiser. PARAGOULD PAINT & WALLPAPER COMPANY To surround yourself with comfort one must remember when building a home, that a most important feature is the wall decorations, the papering, painting and exterior coats of paint. One should use materials that will stand the wear and tear. A firm here that stands ready at all times to give you the benefit of their wide experience in this line is the Paragould Paint and Wall Paper Company at 108 W. Emerson Street. This is the largest, most completely stocked and most up-to-date store of its kind in Northeast Arkansas, and enjoys a business of large magnitude, which is not only local but extends throughout Greene and several adjoining counties. The building utilized is a modern structure with floor dimensions of 25x110 feet. This company is incorporated with an ample capital and has been in operation approximately 11 years. The officers are: J.W. Trieschmann, president; H.S. Trice, vice-president; Jas. A. Thompson, secretary, and A.R. Ware, treasurer and manager. They are all gentleman of excellent standing, well known as straightforward, energetic business men and give ungrudgingly of their aid in advancing the best interest of Paragould and Greene County. |
