Eckhardt & Lennon Company

At the head of the elements constituting the general prosperity and the hope of the city's future greatness must be placed in the manufacturing interests, for surely the greatest benefit and uplift that can be given to the permanent prosperity and happiness of the people of any community is given by the enterprise furnishing remunerative employment to the greatest number of people. Standing at the head of the list among Paragould's manufacturing enterprises and one whose pay-roll adds materially to the sum total of the city's already large pay-roll, is the Eckhardt & Lennon Company, Incorporated, manufacturers of all kinds of Tight Barrel Circled Heading and Kiln Dried and Jointed Tight Barrel Staves.

This concern began business January 1, 1911 and was incorporated on July 1, 1917. In January last this company purchased the two large plants formerly owned by the Pekin Cooperage Company of this city. Prior to that time they had been operating at Wilmont, Ark., and Winnsboro, La., where they still maintain branch plants. The products are produced in the rough at the branch plants and shipped to the Paragould plants, where they are refinished and made ready for shipment. The two large plants of the company in this city, which are situated just South of the Union Passenger Station, on the tracks of the Cotton Belt and Missouri Pacific Railways, cover an area approximately seventeen acres including the storage yards and sheds. When operating at full capacity, they employee an all departments of the business approximately 500 workmen. The company has built a business connection that extends throughout nearly every state in the union, shipments being made in car-lots exclusively to all the leading market centers.

The officers of the Eckhardt & Lennon Company are, H.C. Eckhardt, President; G.L. Prigmore, Vice-President, and Stephen Lennon, Secretary-Treasurer, the last named gentleman being the active manager. L. H. Martin, who was for 20 years with the Kennedy Heading Co., at Memphis, came with the company when they bought the Paragould plants and has charge of the main office here. The above named gentlemen are citizens of unquestionable standing in al circles, are largely public spirited and take an active interest in advancing the best interests of the community in which they are operating.

Paragould Marble Works

One of the oldest customs in the history of mankind is that of placing over the remains of departed loved ones some sort of memorial to mark their last resting place. Away back in scriptural times, clean through to present age, this custom has been in vogue, the plain wooden or stone slab of centuries ago gradually giving away to more artistic work until today our cemeteries contain many costly and elaborate specimens of the stone-cutter's art. Among the concerns engaged in this line in this section, none enjoy a better reputation for straightforward dealing than the Paragould Marble Works, owned by B.F. Justice & Son. They are both well known, enterprising and progressive citizens and have always had the best interests of the community at heart.

This concern is devoted to the manufacture of marble and granite monuments, headstones, markers, etc. Drawings and estimates are furnished upon application and contracts are entered into for work of any magnitude. All cutting and lettering is done by pneumatic tools and machinery and this branch of the business is in charge of men of the highest qualifications in this line.

This establishment is located on Second street, near the Post Office. The firm has built up an extensive business during the ten years of its career and now transacts business in many states of the Union.
