ion. I wanted it to be quiet. I did
not want my sis or any one else to know that I had accepted my
Salvation. In the old barn, I sat down on a cultivator tongue and
began to pray, all the time asking the Lord not to give me this
shouting salvation. After awhile, I decided I would have to let the
Lord have His way. I told the Lord how wretched I was, that I knew I
was not fit to ever be called His own, that I would be happy if He
would take me as a lankey boy just to run errands. That was all the
Lord wanted to hear! I came out of that little old barn shouting. I
did not care who saw me shouting! My sis was shouting! My niece,
Willie Land, she is now, was just a small girl. She told her mother
that old George, the horse, had kicked Fratus Dacus. My sis knew I had
the pure and devine religion. I did not have to tell her this time.
The proof was out in the open. I was shouting to the world what a
great salvation I had found.
THE BOY HAS BECOME A MAN The day came to go for our marriage licenses. I didn't have a dime to my name, so I went to my Brother Morris, and told him that I had to have five dollars, that I was going to get married and had to pay the preacher a little. Morris turned and looked at me and wanted to know if there was something wrong with me. If I was sick or something. He gave me the five dollars. My license cost two dollars and I gave the Preacher one dollar. That left two dollars for a honeymoon. I never felt for a minute that I couldn't make a living for my wife and myself. I had made a cotton crop in Missouri. My wife and I went up and picked the cotton. While in Missouri I had a letter from my brother-in-law down in Arkansas, saying he would love to have us come and make a crop with him; that he would furnish me work through the winter until time to make a crop. Just before we got ready to move into this farm, the tenant house burned down and we had to wait for him to build a new one, although it didn't take long to throw up a two room shack for us to move into.
