wading down to the river. I
could see it was rising and did not look safe for us to ford, so I
returned to camp and begged my Ma and Pa not to cross it, to wait till
someone came along to help us.
I could see the danger of driving into this strange river. I begged and pleaded with both Ma and Pa for us to stay over till the next day. Nothing would stop Pa from driving on our way. As soon as everything was reloaded that Ma had cooked with we started out once more on our adventure. When we reached mid-stream, our horses got scared and started down the stream. I began to beg Pa to try and make them circle back to the bank where we started. We both pulled on one line till we finally got them going back to the bank where we entered. We missed the road alright, and the horses held the wagon till I could run up on a hill and try to find some one to come and help us out. I found a man and he came with a big team and pulled us out onto dry land. By this time my Ma and Pa were willing to stay on till the next day. This man that helped us out told my Pa if we had gone thirty feet farther down we would have gone over a waterfall. The waterfall was so deep we would have been drowned and no one would have known what had become of us. We had to unload our wagon and dry out all our clothing. The wagon bed ran full of water. Next day after the river went down, Pa got a man to guide us across just as I had begged him to do before we drove into this strange river. We made it fine for about a week or so. We camped in the wagon yard and there was a full blooded Indian who camped in the same yard with us. He had a small team of mules he tried to swap Pa for our horses. My Pa told this Indian his team was to small to pull our heavy wagon. We hooked up our team and we were on our way not knowing just where we were going. We were just traveling. We traveled all day. Just about sundown we struck camp. Ma was cooking our supper when we saw a man come riding close by. I will never forget what my Pa said, "Children, this man is the same Indian that tried to swap us out of our good team back where we stayed last night. He has followed us all day and he is going to try and take our team tonight. I had just as well let him have them this morning." Sure enough, just as soon as it got dark, 12 |
