Frank Jones and John Marshall have positions at Tulsa.  Frank Carpenter carried them last Friday.

Eloise Hayes, the charming little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hayes of West Plains, was visiting this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Williamson.

Miss Constance Heath, Jonesboro, has been appointed tax assessor of Craighead county to fill the vacancy made by the death of her father, I. N. Heath.

Mr. and Mrs. John Waldman of Fort Wayne, Ind. visited last week at the rural home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Mayer.  Mrs. Waldman is niece of Mrs. Mayer.

Carl Callahan visited his brother, Earl, at Heber Springs last Sunday.  Earl is employed in Heber as a banker.  He has been there since November.

Wm. Woodsworth of Illinois who recently purchased the 80 acre farm of Sam Swope southwest of town upon which Jess Holloway now resides will arrive here in May to take possession.  Sam Swope has also sold in the Howard Nobit neighborhood to a daughter of Wm. Woodsworth.

E. N. Brawley, brother-in-law to J. H. and Delph Arwood, has rented the L. P. Fraysher blacksmith shop, has recovered the same and will open up for business next week.  Mr. Brawley lives on the Henry Guschke farm in Fairview district.

Wm. Preston Holloway, father of Marshal Holloway, the blacksmith of our town, died April 9 at his home near Camp of pneumonia.  He was born in Tennessee June 11, 1869, coming to Independence County, Ark., with his parents in 1873 and to Fulton County a few years later where he had resided until death.  In 1891 he was wedded to Miss Ruth Cordelia White, a relative of Co. Judge Lee White.  To this union 8 children were born, seven of whom survive him, together with his wife and five grand children, 5 boys and 2 girls.  He was buried at Burke’s Chapel April 10 at 4 p.m., Eld. Norman Cooper conducting the funeral service.

Dave Waits was ruptured early in April while vaccinating hogs and was operated upon Wednesday by Drs. Hull, King, and Norville Dean of Indiana and is doing fine.  He has not yet been permitted to return home.  His wife and Mrs. J. L. Dillard are nursing him.

Rolen’s Brother, Dead

John Rolen, brother of Marion Rolen of our town, died a few days ago at his home in Western Oklahoma, aged 80 years.  Marion Rolen tells us there are only 3 members of his father’s family left, two sisters, Mrs. Marv Eastlick, 81, Western Oklahoma and Mrs. Ellen Taylor, 55, Arcadia, Kansas.

Morris Frazier Weds

Morris Frazier, son of J. C. Frazier of West Helena, was married last Sunday morning in West Helena to Miss Elizabeth Walker of Elaine, Rev. G. E. Patchell of the Methodist church performing the ceremony.  The attendants were Miss Frances Wallbaum, Mr. Hurt Porter, Miss Evelyn Vogel of Wabash, and Mr. Basil Wilson.  Following the ceremony Mrs. J. C. Frazier entertained the bridal party with a sumptuous luncheon.  The bride and groom will make their home with J. C. and Mrs. Frazier.  Morris was born in Mammoth Spring.  The Democrat wishes him and his bridge a happy journey through life.

A Good Woman, Gone!

Mrs. John R. Henley, 63, daughter of the late J. H. Roten, died last Friday at her home at Green Forest, Carroll county.  Beside her husband she is survived by eight children, four sons and four daughters.  The sons are Henry of Helena, Leonard and Fred of Newport and Bryan Henley of Memphis.  The daughters are Mrs. Lee Tims of Tuckerman, Mrs. Odelle Johnson of Newport, Mrs. H. P. Parsons of Memphis, and Mrs. Joy Delozier of Green Forrest.   She was a neighbor of this editor and family for a number of years while they resided in Mammoth Spring and we found her to be a real Christian character.  We are sorry for her departure.  Mrs. Henley is a sister to Mrs. Lee Phillips of Mammoth Spring and Sam Roten of Sage, Ark.

Cooper-Humphrey

Curtis Humphrey, aged 24 and Miss Bessie Cooper, aged 20, were married last Saturday afternoon, Aug. 29 at 3:30 p.m. at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Cooper.  The groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Humphreys and the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard E. Cooper.  The ceremony, a ring ceremony, was performed by Rev. L. V. Brown, pastor of the Christian church.  The young couple left Tuesday morning for their new home in Chicago, Ill., where Mr. Humphreys has employment.  The Democrat wished this young couple a very happy married life.

F. L. Langley of Blytheville enroute to a lodge meeting in Springfield last Sunday stopped off in Thayer and visited in the home of A. A. Arnold and family for a few hours.

Miss Grace Frazier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. C. (Jack) Frazier of this city, entered Springfield Draughon Business University of Springfield, Mo., Nov. 9 for the complete business course.

Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Alexander of Memphis, Tenn. spent the week-end visiting Mrs. Laura Minor.  Before her recent marriage, Mrs. Alexander was Miss Bernice Minor of this city.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Alexander are connected with the Missouri Pacific Railroad company at Memphis, where they are now making their home.

On warrants charging burglary Orvil Kerby and Frank Green were arrested by Sheriff Bowling and his deputies.  Before John W. Carroll, Justice of the Peace, pleaded guilty to entering the store building of M. A. Wood Co. at Many Islands and were bound over to the grand jury.

J. B. Embrey, who for some time has been in charge of the ice plant at this place, has returned to his home in Oklahoma City.

Moten Items

Mrs. John Flannagan and baby have returned to Walnut Ridge.

Robt. Porter of Nettleton visited relatives at Moten this week.

Ira Adkins returned home from St. Louis where he had employment.

Mont Ragsdale and wife visited at the home of Geo. Ragsdale Sunday.

Miss Edith Lunn spent the week end visiting relatives at Ash Flat.

F. A. Cowan and family and Miss Nannie May Hunt visited in Alton Sunday.

Dewell Williams and wife of Paragould visited his mother at Moten this week.

W. H. Spicer and family accompanied Mrs. H. L. Green to point in Iowa visiting relatives and friends.

Ernest Applegate, son of G. Z. Applegate and Miss Zee Cowan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Cowan, both of Moten were united in marriage Sunday Oct. 25 at the home of Esq. John W. Baldwin, he officiating.  They were treated with an old fashioned charivari Oct. 30 at the home of W. H. Spicer.  A large crowd attended.  The happy couple left the next day for Memphis where the groom has employment.

John Buchanan, one of the foremost of Thayer (Missouri) citizens in his days, died in St. Louis last Sunday and was buried in the Thayer cemetery Tuesday.

“Uncle Frank” Joule, 93, a pioneered citizen of Oregon county (Missouri) died Saturday at his farm home, and was buried near Grand Gulf.
