Introduction: (also don't miss the important notes at the bottom of this index)
This project comes in two parts. Part one consists of maps showing the original land grants and the names of their owners. Part two shows the cemeteries on those land grants.
For transcriptions of cemeteries, GOTO transcriptions.
For maps showing cemeteries, GOTO maps.
Land Grants:
Find ancestral land grants located by township, range and section number.
Example:
At the top of the master plat for Franklin County bordering Madison County are two partial townships alphanumerically labeled R27WT13N and R26WT13N.
As an ancillary effort we will later try to identify the original patent owners just across the county lines on all sides of Franklin County and add them later to this index.
Larger farms while enclosed by a section, may occupy parts of two counties, even parts of two or more townships or sections.
Helpful Definitions:
After 1803 all land west of Ohio was surveyed and laid out in squares for settlement. Check out the official designations and sizes. This applies also to the attached master plat of Franklin County which shows all Townships and ranges which touch upon this county.
A township is 36 square miles; A section is one mile scuare and contains 640 acres. A quarter section is 160 acres, 1/4th mile (440 yards) square and about an average size for early farms.
Remember that "township" is a measure of land ONLY. Do not confuse township as a measurement and actual towns, or administrative divisions.
