The remains of "Aunt" Martha Carden were laid to rest in the Cadron Valley Cemetery the past week. Mrs. Cardin was 85 years old on June 5, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. We extend our sympathy.
EAST SHADY GROVE
Our community was made sad last Thursday when "Aunt" Martha Cardin of Needs Creek died. She had three nieces here, Mrs. P.H. Glover, Mrs. Tilda Cato, and Mrs. Sarah Williams, besides a host of grand and great-grand nieces and other relatives and friends. We know our loss is heaven's gain.

Several of this place attended the funeral of "Aunt" Martha Cardin at Cadron Valley Cemetery on last Thursday morning. Mrs. Cardin's death occurred at the home of her son, Jerry Cardin of Needs Creek, June 16. She was 84 years old on June 5. She professed a hope in Christ at the age of 17 years, uniting with the Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the old Star Gap Church at the time of her death. She was the widow of "Uncle" Billy Cardin whose death occurred some twenty years ago. Four children survive her, Mrs. Manda Ingram of Holland, Mrs. Tilda Blythe of Greenbrier, Mrs. Nellie Williams of England, Ark., and Jerry Cardin of Greenbrier.

MRS. CARMICHAEL, VILONIA RESIDENT, SUCCUMBS AT 78
Mrs. Maggie Carmichael, 78, of Rt. 1, Vilonia, died Sunday (March 24, 1968) at Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of G.W. Carmichael.
Mrs. Carmichael, the former Maggie Bennett, was born October 14, 1889, at Bee Branch and was a lifelong resident of Arkansas. She was a methodist.
Survivors include three sons, Floyd Carmichael of Idaho, H.P. Carmichael of Vilonia, and G.W. Carmichael of Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. Claud Ballard and Mrs. B.G. Cogdell, both of Conway, Mrs. Mabel Albert of Idaho, and Mrs. Bill Tittle of Ala.; two brothers, W.G. Bennett of Mich., and C.R. Bennett of Vilonia; a sister, Mrs. J.B. Ballard of Conway; 29 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Services will be ehld at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sharon Baptist Church by the Rev. King Hall and the Rev. Dean Clements. Burail will be in Sharon Cemetery by Doolin Funeral Home.
Pallbearers named are Jess Ballard, Jimmie Bartley, Kenneth Roberts, Francis Bryant, Sam Henderson, and Forrest Jobe.

Almighty God in His wisdom and power has seen fit to pluck another beautiful flower. He took from the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Carroll their darling baby, little Opal Lucile. Little Opal Lucile was born July 20, 1918, and died November 09, 1918. She was only a flower budded on earth to bloom in heaven. She was loved and admired by all who knew her. Weep not, dear father and mother, your darling has gone to never return, but to be prepared to meet her on the golden shore, where you will part from her no more.

MRS. LOUIS CARROLL, WIFE OF REVENUE INSPECTOR, SUCCUMBS
Mrs. Vera Carroll, 35, wife of Louis Carroll, Faulkner County revenue inspector, died at her home int he Beryl community, about 12 miles east of Conway, yesterday. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas K. Hazel, she was a native of Faulkner County and lived here all her life. She was a member of the Beryl Baptist Church.
Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by three daughters, Aileen, Bobbie, and Ellon Carroll; seven sisters, Mrs. Wendell Bryant and Mrs. Clara Stephens of Conway, Mrs. Fred Avra of Beryl community, Mrs. J.T. Venable and Mrs. Thomas Graham of Vilonia, Mrs. Jess McHenry of Little Rock, and Mrs. Clarence White of Houston, Tex.; and eight brothers, Euell of Utah, Billy of Bee Branch, Ornie of Little Rock, Eldon of Texas, Claud, Leon Enos, and Bennie Hazel of Conway. Funeral services were held at Beryl Baptist Church at 2 p.m. today by Rev. T.W. Hayes. Burial was in New Liberty Cemetery in charge of Doolin's Funeral Home.

MRS. J.L. CARROLL DIES AT VILONIA
Mrs. Eva May Carroll, 87, of the Beryl community died Thursday (March 16, 1961) at the home of her son, Tom Carroll, at Vilonia after an illness of two months. Mrs. Carroll suffered a broken hip two months ago.
She was the widow of J.L. (Jackson) Carroll.
Mrs. Carroll was born February 11, 1874, at Conway, a daughter of the late Newt W. and Nannie Hamlet Shaw, and had spent her lifetime in Faulkner County.
She was a Baptist.
Other survivors are another son, Louis Carroll of Conway; two daughters, Mrs. Eula M. Tollett of Ozan and Mrs. Nellie Lackey of Vilonia; a brother, James Thomas Shaw of North Little Rock, 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Beryl Baptist Church by the Rev. E.F. Simmons and the Rev. Gene Smith. Burial will be at New Liberty Cemetery by McNutt Funeral Home.

MRS. O.J. CARSON
Mrs. Lula Carson, aged 39, wife of O.J. Carson, died at her home on South Oliver Street Sunday night at 10 o'clock, after a long illness of tuberculosis. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the family residence, by Dr. C.J. Greene. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery following the service.
Mrs. Carson's family have made their home here for the past four years and their many friends deeply sympathize with them in their bereavement.

W.N. CARTER
William Nathan Carter, 92, of Rt. 2, Greenbrier, died today (September 15, 1977) at Conway Memorial Hospital. He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Carter, a son of John Lee and Hester Pearson Carter, was born October 19, 1884, at Wooster.
He was married in 1916 to the former Alice Pauline Davis, and she survives.
Mr. Carter was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
Other survivors are two sons, Leroy and Eugene Carter, both of Conway; two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Whitaker of Greenbrier and Mrs. Reta Hoshaw of Conway; four brothers, Marvin Carter of Guymon, Okla., Carl Carter of Stuttgart, Chester Carter of Conway, and Charlie Carter of Green Bay, Wisc.; a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Patton of Greenbrier; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

MRS. PAULINE CARTER
Mrs. Pauline Davis Carter, 82, of Greenbrier, died Thursday (December 29, 1977) at Conway Memorial Hospital. She was a housewife and the widow of William Nathan Carter.
Mrs. Carter was born March 06, 1895, at Rose Bud, a daughter of Thomas Howard and Tommie Holloway Davis. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Leroy and Eugene Carter, both of Conway; two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Whitaker of Greenbrier and Mrs. Reta Hoshaw of Conway; a sister, Mrs. Louise Brannon of Wooster; a brother, Leroy P. Davis of Arcadia, Calif.; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

AGED HOLLAND COMMUNITY RESIDENT DIES
Henry Matthews Chaney, 84, of the Holland Community, a retired farmer, died Saturday (February 12, 1966) at Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Chaney was born August 31, 1881, at Greenbrier, and he spent his lifetime in Arkansas.
He was a member of Oakland Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Earl Chaney of Roland; three daughters, Mrs. Francis Duhaime and Mrs. Gracie Loudermilk of Conway, and Mrs. Ruby Butler of Vilonia; three step-sons, Virgil Clements of Richmond, Calif., George Clements of San Bernardino, Calif., and Arville Clements of North Little Rock; three step-daughters, Mrs. Verna Shoemake of Conway, Mrs. Vera Burks of Little Rock, and Mrs. Mary Vest of Charleston, Ind.; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral was held today at Oakland Methodist Church by the Rev. Pat Warrick. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery by McNutt Funeral Home.

E.H. CHEYNE, FORMER CONWAY RESIDENT, DIES AT DANVILLE
Russellville, Apr 21--Edward H. Cheyne, aged 78, of Danville, former state representative from Yell Co., died in a Danville hospital Saturday. He was a Mason, teacher of the Men's Bible Class at the Methodist Church and former clerk and tax collector. Survivors include his wife; a son, E.H. Cheyne, Jr., of Ft. Smith; two daughters, Mrs. Odell Lewis and Miss Lois Cheyne of Danville; a sister, Mrs. R.F. Rainey of Russellville. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church by Rev. Raymond A. Dorman this afternoon.
The Cheyne family lived in Conway several years in the early 30s.

INZA ONEIDA ELLZEY CLIFTON
Inza Oneida Ellzey Clifton, 91, of Conway, died Saturday (Aug. 3, 2002).
She was born Jan. 28, 1911, in Greenbrier, to the late Clint and May Tilley Ellzey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Waverly Clifton; son, John Waverly Jr.; brother, Tremont Ellzey; and sister, Sybil Wilcox.
She was a lifetime member of Springhill Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a home health caregiver and retired from International Shoe Company.
She is survived by a son, John R. Clifton and wife, Terry, of Greenbrier; two daughters, Patsy R. Starr and husband, Duane, of Nashville, Tenn., and Mae Ellen Williams and husband, Bob, of Conway; and brothers and sisters, Mary Jo Nixon, Cornell Reynolds, Clinton Ellzey, Bonnie Loveless and Bill Ellzey. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kay Richards, Alex Starr, Susan Jackson, Brian Williams, John Clifton Jr. and Kevin Clifton; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Springhill Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Stephenson officiating. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery.

FAULKNER MAN DIES IN WRECK NEAR CONWAY
A Faulkner County farmer was killed early today when the truck he was driving overturned as he lost control while passing another vehicle on Highway 65, just below the 65 Drive-In Movie.
John Waverly Clifton, 48, of the Spring Hill community near Greenbrier, died instantly when he was thrown from the half-ton truck. Another passenger, Louis Shoemake, 45, of Conway, suffered chest injuries and is in a "dangerous condition" at Conway Memorial Hospital.
The accident occurred about 1:30 a.m. as Clifton, traveling north, attempted to pass a tractor and trailer and met a vehicle head-on. The third vehicle swerved to the shoulder as Clifton passed the truck and cut to the right.
He lost control and the truck loaded with loose, bolled cotton, overturned. The Clifton vehicle did not collide with the truck or on-coming car, Trooper Robert E. Ward said.
The loose cotton spilled on the highway, became ignited and the Conway Fire Department was called. Deputy Sheriff Wilburn Carter and City Patrolmen Jay White and Louise White investigated with Trooper Ward.
Mr. Clifton, a native of the Spring Hill community is survived by his wife, Mrs. Inza Clifton; a son, Johnny, 10, and a daughter, May Ellen, 14, of the home; another daughter, Mrs. Pat Starr of Sullivan, Mo.; his mother, Mrs. Tom Clifton; and two brothers, Leonard and J.B. Clifton, of the Spring Hill community; and a grand-daughter.
He was a Baptist and served on the township Democratic committee four years.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Spring Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Conrad Glover and the Rev. Wassel Burgess will officiate. Burial will be at Spring Hill by McNutt Funeral Home.

SIDNEY CLEO COLEMAN
Sidney Cleo Coleman, 87, of Little Rock, the assistant head of maintenance at the University of Central Arkansas for 14 years, died Tuesday (July 21, 1992) at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.
Born December 28, 1904, in Headrick, Okla., a son of Oliver and Mary Viola Cornelius Coleman, he moved to Conway when he was five years old, attended Arkansas State Teachers College, where he was captain of the football team for two years. He later was graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Coleman was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.
Survivors are his wife, Phyllis Shorts Coleman; a son, Sydney G. Coleman of Centreville, Ala.; a daughter, Gealy Tucker of Booneville; a sister, Fayzola Tvergyak of Mountain Home; and three grand-sons.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway with the Rev. John Shell officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway.

MRS. CYNTHIA CONDRAY
Sister's Death Closely Follows that of B.B. Condray's Wife

Enders, December 06--Within four days after the death of his wife, B.B. Condray's sister, Mrs. Cynthia Condray, aged 77, died of the same disease, pneumonia, at his home here yesterday. The two women, both of whom had reached an advanced age, were taken ill within two days of each other, death occurring in a little more than a week in both cases. Mrs. Cynthia Condray was a native of Tenn., but came to this state many years ago. Late in life she was married to a distant relative of the same name, William Condray, who died eleven years ago. Since that time she has made her home with her brother, B.B. Condray. The funeral was held here today.

WILLIAM THURMAN CONDRAY
William Thurman Condray, 96, of North Little Rock, formerly of Quitman, passed away Sunday (Dec. 2, 2001).
He was born May 21, 1905, in Quitman. Mr. Condray was a member of North Hills Baptist Church in Sherwood. He was a retired barber, having worked in Quitman, Greenbrier, Guy and Conway. Mr. Condray served many years as music director of Sulfur Springs Baptist Church in Enders.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Flora Rickman Condray; twin sons, Floyd and Lloyd Condray; brothers, Chester and Arthur Condray; sisters, Ruby Lunsford and Myrtle Ussery.
Survivors are a son, George H. Condray and wife, Glenna, of North Little Rock; a daughter, Ava Nell Doyle Wood and husband, Farris, of Pangburn; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Roller-McNutt Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Ward officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Quitman.
Family visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

SILAS CONWAY PASSES AWAY SUCCUMBS TO SLEEPING SICKNESS
Succumbing to an attack of sleeping sickness from which he had suffered for several weeks, Silas A. Conway, 45, well known real estate and insurance man of Conway, died at his home, 1335 College Avenue, Tuesday, at 6 p.m.
Funeral services were to be held at the family home this afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by Dr. E.P. J. Garrott, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Interment will be at Oak Grove community, in charge of J.A. Pence & Son. Pall-bearers were appointed as follows: Active, Carl E. Gentry, John D. Dunaway, J.I. Summers, J.H. Thompson, H.B. Whiddown, and R.E. Speaker; Honorary, A.J. Meadors, W.O. Durham, George Joseph, William Scales, Edward Halter, and F.U. Halter.
Mr. Conway was born near Holland, this county, November 20, 1886, and spent most of his life in Conway. He was formerly associated in the real estate inthe same lines with Mayor H.D. Russell. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katie Conway; one daughter, Miss Mildred Conway; one son, Silas A. Conway, Jr.; and two sister, Mrs. James Brady, and Mrs. John Henderson, both of Little Rock.

A large number of relatives and friends assembled at the Conway home on College Avenue to attend the funeral services of the late Silas a. Conway, Wednesday afternoon. M.C. CONWAY, 69, DIES AT HOME AT DAMASCUS
M.C. Conway, aged 69, native of Arkansas and resident of the Damascus community for 40 years, died at his home at Damascus at 10:30 Wednesday night. He was born May 01, 1872. Mr. Conway is survived by his wife, and one son, O.V. Conway of Damascus, and three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Blythe of Cushing, Okla., Mrs. Maggie Parish of Searcy, and Mrs. Estelle Knopp of Damascus. Funeral services will be held at Pine Mountain Church. Friday at 10 a.m. by Rev. T.W. Hayes and interment in Pine Mountain Cemetery will be in charge of J.A. Pence & Son.

VILONIA MAN'S SON KILLED IN ACTION
A North Little Rock soldier, Pvt. James A. Conway, 21, was killed in action in Korea, June 19, according to the Defense Department. He was the son of James L. Conway of Vilonia.
Pvt. Conway attended school at El Paso and had been overseas three months. He was a member of an infantry machinegun squad.
Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Arnold Fecher of North Little Rock, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Conway of North Little Rock and Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Bratcher of Cabot.

Mrs. Sarah Ann Conway, aged 70, native and lifelong resident of south Van Buren County, died at 4:50 Thursday afternoon at her home in the Southside community. Mrs. Conway was the widow of the late M.C. Conway, who died May 14, 1941. She was born at Bee Branch September 16, 1872. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Surviving are her three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Blythe of Ashing, Okla., Mrs. Estell Knopp of Damascus, and Mrs. Maggie Parrish of Searcy; one son, Otis Conway of Damascus; and seven grandchildren. MRS. S.A. CONWAY DIES AT HOSPITAL
Mrs. Katie Ophelia Conway, 82, of Lake Conway, died Thursday (February 19, 1970) at Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Silas A. Conway and lived for many years at Locust Avenue and McKay Streets in Conway.
She was born December 12, 1887, in Birmingham, Ala., and came to Arkansas in early childhood. She was a daughter of Robert and Della Carter.
Mrs. Conway was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Conway.
Surviving are a son, Silas A. Conway, Jr., of Little Rock; a daughter, Mrs. R.W. (Mildred) Blackwell of Lake Conway; a brother, Julius Carter of Little Rock; a sister, Mrs. Sam King of Conway; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL RITES FOR MRS. COOK
Funeral for Mrs. Della Elizabeth Cook, 86, of 212 Conark Crts., who died Saturday (30 July 1960) was held yesterday at the Cross Roads Church of Christ by Carthel Healey.
Mrs. Cook was born October 16, 1873, at Mount Vernon, a daughter of the late Henry and Sarah Ann Cummings Heffington. She married J.M. Cook in 1897. He survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lucy Hodge of Conway; two sons, Tom Cook of Conway, and Floyd Keathley of Akron, Ohio; 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Otho William Cox, of Jacksonville, a Vilonia native and a retired chef, died Saturday (December 28, 1985).
Born February 06, 1912, he was a son of James Henry and Sallie Spencer Cox. He was a World War II veteran and a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Walker Cox; two stepsons, Davis O'Neal II and Dennis O'Neal of North Little Rock; a stepdaughter, Dixie Willsey of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Chester Cox of Kerrville, Tex., and Elbert Cox of Amarillo, Tex.; and three step-grandchildren.

Norma Lynn Davidson, 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mayo Davidson of the Liberty community near Conway, died yesterday (February 22, 1963) at their home.

Mrs. Meda Othal Day, 84, of Route 9, Conway, widow of Conway merchant Clarence Day, died yesterday (January 04, 1987).
Born July 15, 1902, a daughter of Lonzo and Liza Kirby Loveless, she was a housewife and a member of Pickles Gap Baptist Church.
Survivors are a son, Charles Day of Conway; a brother, Doyle E. Loveless of Little Rock; a sister, Mrs. Virtle Hegi of Conway; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Our community was made sad Saturday when the message went out that Mrs. Margaret Day was dead. She would have been 72 years old on February 11 and had lived at Pickles Gap for many years. She was a member of Pickles Gap Church. She leaves four sons, Cal, Walter, Jim, and Ed; and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Hicks of Guy, Mrsl. Della Hallums of Spring Hill, and Mrs. Ella Atkisson, with whom she made her home. She also leaves 31 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends to mourn her death. All her children were at her bedside. Weep not, friends, for your mother is not dead, but just asleep in Jesus. She was a Christian from her girlhood until God called her home. Rev. E.P.J. Garrott of Conway conducted the funeral service and she was laid to rest in Macedonia Cemetery by the side of her companion.
The bereaved have our deepest sympathy.

OBITUARY
The death angel visited our home and took from us our beloved father, John Day. He was ill only a few days, and died August 16, 1916. He left his wife, six boys and three girls, and many relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was born in Alabama, October 11, 1850, came to Arkansas 30 years ago and remained home until his death. He was a member of the Baptist Church for 36 years and was a good citizen, a good husband, and a loving father. He was loved by all who knew him. It was sad for him to leave us, our home is lonely. He leaves a vacancy in our home that can never be filled, but God saw fit to call him home to his mansion above. Oh, how we miss him, but we can only prepare while we wait to meet him where there will be no more parting, no more pain or death, where we can be with him and praise God forever.

W. CALVIN DAY, 77, DIES SUDDENLY AT HIS HOME HERE
William Calvin Day, aged 77, died of a heart attack at his home on Washington Avenue at 10 o'clock last night.
Mr. Day, employed in a feed store operated by his son, Clarence Day, for the past decade or longer, was at work yesterday. He returned home in the late afternoon.
A native of Fort Payne, Ala., Mr. Day had lived in Arkansas since childhood, spending most of his life in Conway. The son of John Day and Margaret Leigh, he is survived by his wife, the former Ida Burks, to whom he was married June 06, 1931. His first wife died about 20 years ago. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Other suvivors include three other sons, Vernon of San Antonio, Tex., Truett of Los Angeles, Calif., and Raymond Day of Conway; three daughters, Mrs. S.U. Butts of Coweta, Okla., Mrs. W.H. Halbert of Little Rock, and Mrs. J.N. Morgan of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Walter of Vilonia and Ed Day of Conway; a sister, Mrs. Della Hallum of Greenbrier; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

JIM B. DAY, DIES SUDDENLY SATURDAY AT DOCTOR'S HOME
Funeral services were held by Rev. T.W. Hayes Sunday at Macedonia Church for Jim B. Day, aged 63, of Mayflower, who died suddenly Saturday afternoon at the home of Dr. G.W.L. Harrod in the Woodrow community, where Mr. Day was receiving treatment. He had been in poor health for several years, but his death was unexpected.
Mr. Day was a native of Georgia, where he was born September 23, 1877, but had lived in Faulkner County for about 50 years. His is survived by a son, Calvin Day of Reno, Nev.; four daughters, Mrs. George Moss and Mrs. Jack Brown of Reno, Mrs. Kenneth Martin and Miss Louise Day of Mayflower; four grandchildren, Mary Frances and George Moss, Jr., and Jack Brown, Jr., of Reno, and Jimmie Edward Martin of Mayflower; three brothers, W.C., Ed, and Walter Day of Conway; and one sister, Mrs. J.T. Hallum of Little Rock.

THOMAS W. DAY, RETIRED MINISTER, DIES AT HOSPITAL
The Rev. Thomas Walter Day, 71, retired Baptist minister of Conway, died today at Memorial Hospital following a stroke.
He was born December 26, 1886, at Spring Hill, a son of the late John and Margaret Leith Day, and lived all his life in Arkansas. The Rev. Mrs. Day moved to Conway in 1950.
Survivors include a son, Alfred Owen Day of Little Rock Air Force Base; two daughters Miss Margaret Day of Conway and Miss Vida Day of Little Rock; and a grand-daughter, Miss Kimberly Jane Day of Guy.
Funeral services are to be conducted at 3 p.m. tomorrow at McNutt Funeral Chapel with the Rev. J.H. Street and the Rev. E.F. Simmons officiating. Burial will be at Macedonia Cemetery by McNutt Funeral Home.

Mrs. Emily Johnston Day, aged 41, wife of W. Cal Day, succumbed to an extended illness Wednesday afternoon at her home on Johnson Street. Her condition had been critical for several months and the end was not unexpected.
She was born September 20, 1881, in Miss., but came to Ark. with her parents when a child and had lived in Faulkner County over 40 years.

Funeral services in charge of Dr. E.P.J. Garrott, pastor of the First Baptist Church, were held at the family resident at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning. Resolutions of Bristol Baptist Church in conference: Whereas, our Divine Father and Creator has seen fit to call from us our beloved sister, Tilia P. Day. She was born at Demopolis, Ala., July 01, 1869, and moved with her parents to Brinkley, Ark., when nine years of age; was converted at the age of 14; was married to E.W. Day at the age of 16; and was mother of seven children, two dying in infancy. Her husband and four sons and one daughter survive her. She came from the freewill Baptist Church of Bristol in 1911. She died March 01, 1914, in peace with God.
Therefore, be it resolved, first, that we lost a much-loved and useful member of our church; second, that we deeply mourn her loss and extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolence to her sorrowing husband, sons, and daughter, and other loved ones, for we realize they have lost one of their fondest ties; third, we bow in humble submission to the will of our Heavenly Father and deeply feel her loss in the church, yet we rejoice in her blessed gain; fourth, that as a token of our high appreciation of our sister and friend these resolutions be placed on our church record.

W.O. DURHAM DIES AT HOME SUNDAY NIGHT
William Osburn Durham, aged 72, citizen of Conway for more than a half century, died at his home, 426 Locust Avenue, at 9 o'clock last night. Mr. Durham had been confined to his home two years by illness, but had not been active since February, 1942, when he was struck and injured by an automobile on a downtown Conway Street.
He formerly was in charge of the J.D. Dunaway insurance office in Conway and prior to that time taught school in Faulkner County and was connected with several Conway stores. He was elected treasurer in 1938 and served two terms.
Mr. Durham was born in Mississippi, March 01, 1875, and lived in Arkansas most of his life. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and Baptist church. His marriage to the former Minnie Teagle occurred September 27, 1907. Surviving are his wife, a son, Shirley Durham of Conway; a daughter, Mrs. Keith Harrison of Texarkana; a step-daughter, Mrs. Homer Wilkins of Conway; a sister, Mrs. Will Sparrow of Searcy; and two granchildren. Funeral services will be held at Doolin's funeral chapel at 10 a.m. Tuesday by Rev. Harold B. Tillman, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

SHIRLEY O. DURHAM
Shirley O. Durham, 88, of Conway, died Wednesday (February 26, 2997) at Salem Place Nursing Center.
Born October 03, 1908, in Conway, son of William and Minnie Teagle Durham, he was a retired coach, principal and teacher at Conway High School, a Conway High graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas), a Baptist, and a World War II Army Air Forces veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mobbs Durham and a son, Bill Durham.
Survivors are two neices, Sally Still Abbe of El Paso, Tex., and Elaine Wilkins Maynard of Conway; a sister-in-law, Bessie Keathley Mobbs of Conway.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home of Conway with Dr. R. Dale Wicker, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

EDWIN DURHAM GOES TO DEATH HERO OF CRASH
Edwin Oldham Durham, aged 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.O. Durham, succumbed to injuries at 11:50 o'clock at St. Anthony's hospital in Morrilton last night from injuries sustained July 4 in a truck crash on Petit Jean Mountain. He had rallied earlier in the night, and attendants thought his chances for recovery were improving, but he took a turn for the worse after 11 o'clock and lived only a few minutes.
His body was brought to Conway this morning by J.A. Pence & Son and is at the home of his parents on South Locust Street. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning.
Durham was a member of the Epworth League picnic party that spent the fourth on Petit Jean Mountain. The party was coming down the steep mountain road when the brake bands of the truck burned out and crashed into an embankment. More than 25 were on the truck and one, Miss Arvilla Campbell, is not expected to live. Four others yet remain int he Morrilton hospital.
Young Durham died a hero. He sacrificed his life that he might save the lives of the entire party. the youth was riding the fender on the side of the driver as the truck started down the mountain. When he saw that it was out of control of the driver, Jerry H. Glenn of Little Rock, he caught the steering wheel and directed the truck into the embankment. Had it been allowed to run off the deep cliff, the entire party probably would have been killed.
Durham was in a position to have jumped from the truck when he saw it was heading widely off the road, but coolly he took hold of the wheel and directed it to the opposite side of the road from the cliff.
The truck was telescoped in the crash, and it was thought Durham was caught by the heavy body. He received a ghastly wound about the stomach and one of his lungs was also injured, it was said. A watch in the youth's pocket stopped at 5:17 and it is presumed this was the exact time of the accident.
Durham was born January 16, 1911, in Conway.
Young Durham graduated from Conway high school last month and during the vacation period had been in the employee (employ) of the Marland Oil Co. He had planned to enter college this fall.
At school and in church affairs, Durham was a leader. He was a member of the high school quartet and took active part in a member of other school activities. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and president of the Berean Sunday School class, of which Mrs. Florence Traylor is the teacher. Members of his high school and Sunday school classes will serve as pall bearers at the funeral Saturday morning.
Funeral services will be held at the family residence, 513 South Locust Street, tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock in charge of Dr. E.P.J. Garrott, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. Active pall bearers will be as follows: A.J. Meadors, Jr., David Doyle, Walter Dunaway, Ed George, William George, and Paul Thomason. Honorary pall bearers will be: Hamilton Traylor, Jack Hickerson, Earl Sims, Lloyd Sims, James Clayton, Truett McPherson, Travis Traylor, Paul Jones, Gordon Westmoreland, Hal Fraser, Kessinger Nowell, Silas Snow, Benton Wofford, John Dorrill, Howard Dorrill, Maxfield Garrott, Marvin Buffington, Albert Burton, T.J. Robinson, Doyle Thomason, Steve DeJarnatt, Ralph DeJarnatt, Thomas O'Neal, James Cox, Bob Taylor, Glenn Clements, Tom Watson, Lester Adair, Donaghey Sammons, Billy Bowles, Truett Day, Roy Hickerson, Lewis McKinney, Bob Adams, and Nolan Minton.
Besides his parents, Durham is survived by two sisters, Miss Mary Frances Durham and Mrs. Homer Wilkins, and one brother, Shirley Durham, all of Conway.
Misses Lillie Hale, Burmer Bryan, Lucille Shaw, and Clara Mowery, State Teachers College students and other members of the ill-fated picnic party most seriously hurt, were reported resting comfortably at St. Anthony's hospital this morning and their rapid recovery is predicted.
Misses Ida McCubben and Margaret Combs have been removed to the Faulkner County hospital here. It is thought both will be discharged within a few days.

The funeral of little Joe Durham, two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Durham, who died yesterday at noon, will be held at their home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. The funeral was delayed to await the arrival of a brother, Dan Durham, who is en route from Denver, Colo., and is expected to arrive here tonight or tomorrow morning.

LONOKE'S FORMER SHERIFF IS DEAD
Ben W. Durham, aged 63, sheriff of Lonoke County for four years ending January 1 and for a number of years a well known citizen of Conway, died at his home at England, Ark., at 6 o'clock this morning, according to word received here. Heart failure was the immediate cause of death, although Mr. Durham had been in poor health for several months.
Funeral services will be held at England Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will be at that place.
Mr. Durham was born in Mississippi October 16, 1860, and came with his parents to Conway in 1872. He lived here until about 25 years ago, when he moved to England. He was married in 1898 to Miss Lula Hicks of Lonoke, who with four sons survive him. The children are Ben W., Jr., Hicks, Harrell, and Earl. Mr. Durham also leaves two sisters, Mrs. W.A. Cargile of Quitman and Mrs. A.R. England of Conway; one brother John H. Durham of Conway. He had many friends in this city who will be deeply grieved to learn of his death.

Mrs. Annie Duncan - Durham, aged 49 years, widow of the late W.L. Mrs. Durham was born at Springfield on April 07, 1868. After living at Plumerville and near Wooster, she moved to Conway about 25 years ago.. She was married to W.L. Durham in 1897. She was a graduate of Hendrix College, completing the course with the class of 1891. After graduating Hendrix, she attended Dr. Price's Seminary at Nashville, Tenn., a year.
Surviving Mrs. Durham are one daughter, Miss Alma Durham, aged 17; one son, Duncan Durham, aged 14, and one brother, Judge W.H. Duncan. The pall bearers will be S.E. Anderson, B.L. Harton, D.O. Harton, Sr., B.T. Deal, John D. Dunaway, and Frank E. Robins.

POISON FATAL TO SMALL GIRL
Alma Anne Durham, 2, Dies Here
Rat poison eaten earlier in the afternoon proved fatal Saturday night to Alma Anne Durham, two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Durham, at the home of the child's grandmother, Mrs. John Henderson, 405 South Oliver Street. The baby, who lived with Mrs. Henderson, was playing with several other children in a neighbor's yeard and found the tube of poisoning in an outbuilding, where it had fallen from a shelf.
Medical aid was summoned and an antidote given the child, but she succumbed about four hours after swallowing the poisoning. Besides her parents, the baby is survived by one brother, Duncan Durham, Jr., aged three. Mr. Durham came here yesterday from Ft. Smith and Mrs. Durham was summoned from Little Rock when they received news of the child's death.
Funeral services in charge of Dr. E.P.J. Garrot, pastor of the First Baptist Church, assisted by Dr. J.M. Workman, pastor of the First Methodist Church, were held at the home of Mrs. Henderson this morning at 10 o'clock. Pallbearers were Misses Naomi Parker, Montez Lyons, May Wortham, May Lee Simmons.

Melba Danette, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Durham of New Orleans, born Monday, died a few hours later, according to a message received by Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Durham, parents of Dan Durham, a former Conway citizen.
