Letters Concerning Dr. James Phillip Stanley

Sept 23, 1913

Dr. Jordan, Philadelphia, Pa:

Dear Sir,

I wrote you some time ago, that I appreciate your letter regarding the late Dr. James Phillip Stanley ( 1858 Med. U of P), who was my father. Am sorry to write, that I have been unsuccessful in securing any definite information .

He was born on Aug 29 th 1833- died September 8- 1899. Graduated from your college, began practice at Selma, Ark. He taught school to obtain an education. Married my mother at the begining of the war and served most of the time as surgeon. Was wounded , but not fatally. He was a Mason, Knight of Honor and a devout Christian of course. What I have written may be of no service to you, and I am sorry not to be able to give particulars.

Respect.

Mrs. Joe Cook

(over) All of his comrades have passed away, all that anyone can say is that he was fearless and brave , and was of much service.

* this is the end of the transcription. This letter and the one to follow were contributed by Dr. Christopher Johnson (a descendant of Dr. J. P. Stanley) via Carolyn Haisty. It is assumed that the letters were a response to an inquiry by him to find out about Dr James Phillip Stanley's military service.

Oct 5, 1913 Dr. Jordan Philadelphia, Pa.

Dear Dr.

Your card of recent date to _____ . Am sorry not to be able to give desired information as to what battle my father was wounded.

I have secured the following information, subject to your reading and approval.

Dr. James Phillip Stanley

Was born Aug 29th 1833- Died Sept 8, 1899.

He was reared in Tenn. and when quite young decided to become a Dr.. His father was very anxious that he should become a Lawyer- and, so opposed to anything else, would not give him money-- So my father taught school, made money and prepared himself for practice. I will add he was very proud of his "sheep skin" from your town . They were proudly hung in his office and he referred them to people with much pride.

He came to Ark. directly after receiving diploma, and located in Selma, Drew Co. and was there when war broke out. He had just recently married to a Martha Elizabeth Howell, of the same place.

He went out Capt. of company in 1862 in Moragan's Reg. Gen. Tappin's Brigade, Dis. Com. Gen. Churchill- In Price's Army in raid that next year into Mo. At close of war he had been promoted to L. Col..

He was wounded during this time just a hair's bredth from heart, but so far not to be fatal, and what battle do not know. He did surgical work too.

He was considered fearless and brave . I remember that as a child. Was a Mason, Knight of Honor, a devout member of the Methodist Church. He was father of 13 children, of which only 4 survived him. Was living in Pine Bluff at the time of death, having moved here from Selma about 20 years previous. Was pres. of Medical Board and was a steward in church.

Respct.

Mrs. Joe Cook 1119 West 2nd Ave
