About seven miles south from Magnolia, Arkansas down Burnt Bridge
Road you will find the Philadelphia cemetery. The cemetery and the
little church is all that is left of what use to be the Philadelphia Community.
Oh, but in it's day it was the place where a lot of our folks lived their
lives and worked the farms and sawmills and strived for a better life.
Let's go back to the time when there was a sawmill right next
to the school house where Manson Grant told me that you could stick
your hand out the school window and nearly touch the lumber stacked there.
Back to when you paid your grocery bill when the crops came in. Let's go
back to the place and time when most of your social activity involved the
church or "meeting house" as it was so often called, and back to the days
when breakfast involved a fast trip out to the hen house to see if you
were going to have eggs with your biscuits. Let's go down that old dirt
road, called Burnt Bridge Road, and visit with our ancestors that cut the
logs, smoked the hams, made the quilts, canned the food for winter, and
done it all from scratch, just to survive. Their lives were hard, and most
of us will never really get the picture of how they lived, but with all
of your help we can visit the memories and share with each other what we
have been able to hold on to and let these people never be forgotten.
I will never be able to repay the older folks that have educated
me about the Philadelphia Community from about 1870 to the present. Starting
with my Great Aunt Epsy (Grant) Dodson, Miss Mallie Grant, Bess (Elmore)
Johnson, and Beulah (Dodson) Hartsfield, to just name a few.
Aunt Epsy told me that the story was related to her, that when
her Mother made the trip from Georgia to Arkansas about 1881 with
three of the girls, it took three days from Atlanta, Ga. on the train to
Hope, Ark. And then they came from Hope, Ark. to Magnolia and it took three
more days by ox and wagon.
D.C. Sanders wrote a small book about growing up around
the Philadelphia Community and if you get a chance it is a very cute little
book. I have a copy and I think they are still sold at the Texarkana Museum.
On this site we will be telling the stories and remembering the
families that lived their lives here. Some started life here and some ended
up their life in this little community. We will start recording the people
buried at the little cemetery as you folks send me your info. I have a
lot of them on paper just need to start putting them on this site. In time
I hope to have all the names of the folks buried here.
NOW, y'all get busy and send me what you want on the
site and I will try my best to make it happen.

This will be a partial list of the burials in the cemetery and some information on them. As it grows I will make a page for the cemetery by itself. Some of them might be listed twice as I get info from different people, but I will get them narrowed down soon.
