Roy’s note: Jacob Pope (born: Feb 24, 1773, married Sarah Lee was
born and grew up and married in Robeson County, North
Carolina. He and his brother John moved to
Marion County, Mississippi in 1812.
He
settled on a farm about 20 miles south of Columbia Mississippi. Lived and died there about 1837. The old house place now belongs to a man by
the name of Ernest Ford. His address is Route 5 Box 132, Columbia, Mississippi. (This was in 1962)
___________________________________________________________________________
Roy’s note: At the time they came and settled in 1812, Mississippi was the western section of the Mississippi Territory. Alabama was the eastern section. Mississippi was admitted to the union as the 20th state in Dec. of 1817. Along about this time the United States and England were fighting the War of 1812 (Second War of Independence). This War ended in 1814 but a large battle was fought near New Orleans, Louisiana (not so far away) in Jan. of 1815. Don’t know if any of these folks got involves.
____________________________________________________________________________
Roy’s note: Dolphin (born 1800) Jacob’s son was born in Robeson County, North Carolina. Moved with his father’s family to Marion County, Mississippi in 1812. Married Elizabeth Mixon there Nov 11, 1825. See the Marion Co. Census for 1850. Moved to Columbia County, Arkansas in 1853.
____________________________________________________________________________
Roy’s Note: Dolphin A. Pope and 2 of his brothers and one deceased brother’s family were in Marion County in 1850 according to the census. There may be other brothers but I am not sure.
_______________________________________________________________________
Roy’s Note: Looking closely at the Marion Co. Marriage Records: I find marriage records of:
1. Benjamin (1818)
2. James (1818)
3. Dolphin (1825)
4. John (1827)
5. Jacob (1836)
6. Clarissa (1830)
7. M.A.E. (1856, second marriage)
These are some of the children of Jacob (born: Feb 24, 1773), and Sarah who moved to Marion County, Mississippi in 1812.

Roy’s note: this census was taken in Aug. of 1850, Henry Hampton Pope was born in Nov of 1850. This bunch is his Mom and Dad and older 2 brothers and 7 sisters. Two more sisters had left home and one older brother had died , see note below. They moved to Arkansas some time after this census was taken. (around 1853).
___________________________________________________________________________________
Roy’s Note: Two older girls Francis (Dec 17, 1826) and Sarah (March 21, 1828) were probably married and had gone from home by the time of the 1850 census. A son Calvin (1831- Oct. 8, 1848) had passed away. See data of Pope family Bible records.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Roy’s Note: I think that I. J. Pope (born 1836) was Jacob Jasper Pope who died at or near Memphis, Tennessee, during the Civil War. J. J. Pope (born 1846) was John Jamison Pope.

June 7, 1969
Dear Roy,
I
found your letter most interesting and wish I could be of more help. Perhaps your Mom didn’t remember that the
Pope Bible is in such poor shape. It was
one of the few things found after a cyclone in the early part of the
century. Its front cover (leather) is
there, but the first pages are gone, and it is almost illegible and crumbling. To my surprise, I found the date and
publisher at the end of the old Testament:
Charles Gaylord
Boston, Mass.
1832
It belonged to
my mother’s grandmother, Elizabeth Pope, wife of Dolphin. The family record appears to be just theirs
and is incomplete, as I don’t see Henry Hampton. I have copied it as well as I could. I would strongly urge you to go see my mother
about the gaps. I talk to her often, and
she has her wits and would love to tell what she remembers, before it is too
late.
You ask about Gus Kirby.
I assume you refer to my father.
(His brother Major had a son named Gus also.) My father, Joseph Augustus Kirby was born Sept. 16, 1866 at Leesville,
La. and died May 22, 1935 at Tallulah, La.
– Madison Parish.
The data on Joe and me is as

We were married on Feb 1, 1947 at San

You must write me about your family and send a picture. I used to work in the Capitol and at Std. Oil
and remember Baton Rouge well.
Best
of luck in your ancestor hunt.
Affectionately,

The first might be Elizabeth’s
brother and the last (in different handwriting) must be the child of a Pope
Daughter.
I also have a letter dated 1844 to Dolphin Pope at Columbia,
Mississippi from Tennessee
(cost $.25) before there were stamps. I believe I have the only picture and
letter of Major Kirby and also of the entire Hampton Pope family. Also a plate and spoon my parents bought when
they married March 16, 1898. Their first son, Pope Kirby born Feb. 2, 1899 – died Sept 14, 1904.
Roy’s note: Compare this to the information of the 1850 census of Marion Co. Mississippi
Roy’s note: In 1970, through my Uncle Vance (Mom’s older brother) I made contact with
Mrs. Kay Campbell of St. Joseph Louisiana. This data was a windfall of information
about the Pope clan.

Dear “Fifth Cousin”:
My father gave me your letter to answer as I have most
of the known history of the Pope family.
I hope the enclosed will help
you. And that you will be able to read
the copies, some of which didn’t turn out too good. There is a lot of information in Uncle Jake’s
letters so I copied them, too. If you’re
ever interested in visiting the cemetery in Mississippi,
would you get in touch with me, as I never did find the time to go and think it
would be most interesting.
As you probably know,
Uncle Jake died about 4 or 5 years ago but he did give me all the
information he had relative to our family tree.
Of which, I was very grateful, as this can be a rather expensive and
time-consuming hobby.
The “Blewer” history he refers
to is rather long and since I wasn’t sure you would be interested in that part
of the family, I did not copy it. If you
are interested, let me know, but I have to impose on others to do the copying
as I do not have a machine. A lot of
time has gone into this research and money (but from what I understand, Uncle
Jake had both!).
The Souters’s that he mentions are my father’s mother’s
people and not related to you. I have so
much “stuff” and have hurriedly looked through so as to ge this in the mail
today. If I run across anything that I
think you will be interested in, I’ll forward it on.
If you’re ever up in these parts, come by and see us!
You will notice, my name has changed.
Very truly your,
K. Campbell

Kirby) and a couple of years older than she.

Dear
Niece,
I
have your letter of March 1st.
I have been away over in Mississippi, looking for more
information on the Pope family history, or I would have answered sooner.
I am sending you a sheet, which will
give you about all the information, I have on the family history. You will find the date of John Lewis Pope’s
birth I don’t know the date of his marriage.
I would think some of the Souters might have it. The date of his death is on the marker at his
grave, but I don’t happen to have it. As
to the family Bible, I understand Otice has it but it seems to have been
destroyed long ago. Pat had a
photostatic copy made of one page, containing the date of the birth of all the
children of John J. Pope and Laura Eudera Pope.
I think Otice has a copy or the original.
As to John J. Pope, the J. stands
for Jamison. I don’t know where the name
Jamison came from. I don’t find it in
the Pope names. It might have come
through the family of my grandmother, Elizabeth Mixon. My father John Jamison Pope enlisted in the
Confederate Army for the later part of the Civil War. He enlisted at Magnolia, Columbia County, Arkansas. His brother was in the Confederate Army in
the early part of the war and died at or near Memphis, Tennessee, during the war. His name was Jacob, for whom I was
named. So far as I can tell there have
one or more Jacob Popes in the family at all times during the last two hundred
years. I am the last one by my name,
that I know of. I find of several in Mississippi and North Carolina where the family came from
to Mississippi.
Genealogy is interesting work. I
don’t know much about it but would get a kick out of it, if I were a few years
younger. I am too old. Will be 80 on my next birthday. I have make several trips to Mississippi and one to South Carolina in quest of information,
when I thought the family came from South Carolina. Later, I found tht they came from North Carolina.
I
had hoped to see Hulett and Otice before answering your letter but have
not. They were both about like the have
been for the last year or so. The last
time I saw them, which was about a month ago.
If I find anything else, that I
think you would like to have, I will send it to you.
Two Pope women far off cousins, in Mississippi are helping me with the
family history now. They are really
doing most of the work of late.
Glad to have heard from you. Write me again if you feel like it and think
of any information, that I have not furnished.
Sincerely, your uncle

Dear Niece,
I sent
you a brief family history a day or two ago.
In writing it, I forgot to tell you that John, Sampson, and Henry Pope
lived in Robeson County, North
Carolina at the time of this history. I think John came from Isle
of Wight County, Virginia. I may be able to give you more on that later.
Jacob Pope, my great grand father, who was born and grew
up and married in Robeson County, North
Carolina. He
and his brother John moved to Marion County, Mississippi in 1812.
Dolphin,
Jacob’s son and my grand father, was born in Robeson
County, North Carolina. Moved with his father’s family to Marion
County, Mississippi in 1812. Married
Elizabeth Mixon there Nov 11, 1825. Moved to Columbia County,
Arkansas in 1853. I have nothing on the family of Elizabeth
Mixon. I would like to have it and will
keep trying and will let you know if I find anything.
You
had better make a note on the sheet, of the memorandum, I have written
above. Have copies of the sheet made for
other members of your family. If I am
able to complete the history, I will try to send you a copy. I will be 80 years old at amy next birthday
and am to old to get around so well.
Sincerely, your
uncle

Dear Niece,
I
received your lettter of December 26th,
1961. I didn’t know what had
become of you. I will try now try to
answer you letter.
I
spent a lot of time and money getting the information on both the Pope Family
and the Blewer Family. You may not know
that my mother was a Blewer; family from South Carolina. I am sending you a copy of both family
histories, as I have them. As I have
only a few copies left, I will expect you to make or have made copies for any
other members of the family, who may want one.
Yes,
Jacob Pope married Sarah Lee as you will find in the family history. He settled on a farm about 20 miles south of Columbia,
Mississippi. Lived and died there about 1837. The old house place now belongs to a man by
the name of Ernest Ford. His address is
Route 5 Box 132, Columbia, Mississippi. There is a Pope Reunion every year. Generally held at the Prentiss
Park just south of McComb,
Mississippi. I can’t give you the date but it is generally
on Sunday, near June 20th. If
you will write Ernest Ford in tow or three months, he can give you the
date. I don’t know that a date has been
decided on yet. Mr. Ford will likely
know by May. He is also a descendant of
Jacob Pope but he knows very little about the family history. If you will find out when the reunion will be
held and go over there you will meet a hundred or more of the Popes and Pope
relatives. I may go but am not sure
about it yet. I am 85 years old and in
very good health but most too old to make many trips like that.
Jacob
Pope was buried by a small creek on the family farm about 20 of his descendants
were buried there. None for the last 75
years. The cemetery has grown up in
trees and brush and forgotten by most of the family. No markers at any of the graves. We made up money to have the cemetery cleared
off and a marker placed there. That has
been done and if I get over there again, I expect to go by to see it. I have not been there since the work was done
and the marker put in place.
There
is a cemetery working at Harmony, where most of our people are buried, every
year on the second Saturday in May and August.
I generally go; especially to the one in May. If you will go up there, you will meet a lot
of Pope and Souter relatives.
Sincerely,
J. G.

Dear Niece,
I
noticed your letter was written on Tuesday January 9th. That is the day it snowed here and the weather was bad all the week. We had a temperature of Zero here. Rained Saturday night and melted all the snow
that was left.
You
said that you would make copies of the family history for other members of the
family. I gave Fred a copy of the Blewer
History. Don’t remember whether I gave
him a copy of the Pope History or not.
You might send him one and send copies to your Aunts in Houston. I don’t know their addresses. I have only a few copies left. I have tried to get a copy into each
family. In that way it will be available
to all, if they are interested enough to get copies made.
Let me
know if you will be able to go to the Pope Reunion at Prentiss just south of Mc
Comb, Mississippi. I will likely see you there, if nothing gets
in the way. If I go my wife will likely
go with me. She is a good driver and it
is not so far over there. Columbia
and the Jacob Pope old homestead is forty or fifty miles east of McComb. If I go I hope to be able to go to Columbia
on Saturday and go to the old place Saturday afternoon. I would like to go to the old cemetery and
see just what has been done. I have not
seen it since the work was done and the
marker placed at the grave of Jacob Pope and Sarah Lee Pope. There is a nice tourist court about a mile
north of Columbia where I usually stay. The hotel is a large framed building and I am
afraid of it. It looks like a firetrap,
If you can come over there Saturday we can meet at some place and go to the old
homestead together. You can let me know
later about your coming etc. I will not
need you to come for me. It is not much
father form here, than it is from Baton Rouge.
Morris
Anderson (Mickie as he was called) was a first cousin to your father. Morris was killed in Japan. His widow, whose name I have forgotten, live
in Baton Rouge. Raburn another Anderson
boy runs a filling station west of Baton Rouge. I think he is on the road from Baton
Rouge to Krotz Springs. I don’t have his address. You might be interested in getting in touch
with them.

Dear Niece,
I
received a letter from Mrs Gertrude Pope Hullum, Route 2 Box 86 Vicksburg,
Mississippi. She said that the Pope reunion will be at the
Percy-Quinn Park;
Sunday June 17th. In the
event we should not get together, before going to the Park, you will find it
about four miles south or southwest of McComb, Mississippi.
The Jacob
Pope Cemetery
is about 50 miles due east of McComb, Mississippi
and about twenty miles south of Columbia, Mississippi
They
telephoned me about Fred’s death. We
intended to go to the funeral but backed out, when we learned that ice was forming
in some places in this area. We were
afraid we would find ice on the roads.
We
were at Springhill on Sunday before Fred passed away Monday. Learned from the family that he was in a very
serious condition. We went to the
Hospital to see Bill Britt. He was in a
very serious condition. I have been
expecting to hear of his death every day since.
If you
wish to find out anything more about the reunion at any time, write Mrs.
Gertrude Pope Hullum, at Route 2 Box 86 Vicksburg,
Mississippi. She is a widow School teacher and very busy
but can always find time to help other people.
We
still expect to go to the reunion and if convenient for you, you might meet us
at the tourist court, which is about a mile north of Columbia. I have forgotten the number of the road, but
it leads north from the north and of Main Street
of Columbia and goes to Prentiss,
Mississippi. We should get there about the middle of the
afternoon. That would give us plenty of
time to go to the Pope Cemetery. Then we could go to Percy-Quinn
Park on Sunday morning. We can contact each other about the first of
June about that arrangement.
Sincerely,
Your Uncle,

WILLIAM POPE
(William &
Mary Quarterly, Vol. 27 (1) Pages 61-64)
William Pope patented land in Nensemond
County, Virginia, in 1656, (a)
1662, (b), as shown by the land grant records in office of the Register of the
Land office at Richmond, Virginia. In 1665 (c) he patented land in Isle
of Wight County as
shown by the records of that county.
In Waters’ Genealogical Gleanings, it is stated that in
1665 William Pope received a grant of land in Westmoreland
County, Virginia. (d). Mr R. A. Brocek suggest the probability that
William Pope of Nensemond and Westmoreland and Nathaniel Pope of Westmoreland
Counties, were brothers. (Nathaniel
Pope’s daughter, Ann married John Washington, great grandfather of George
Washington). This suggestion is further
borne out by the fact that at least one of the grandsons of Nathaniel Pope of Westmoreland
County lived in Isle
of Wight County, Virginia. This Richard Pope, to who his brother John
gave power of attorney August 9th,
1690 (e), their exact relationship to William Pope is as undetermined. The same may be said of Thomas Pope, whose
will was recorded in Isle of Wight County September 27th, 1684 (f).
William Pope was a Quaker. His family record has been preserved in the
Quaker records and the original manuscript is now in safety deposit in Baltimore,
Maryland.
The following is an exact copy as published by the Southern History
Association (g).
“William Pope and Mary, his wife, their children’s

Roy’s Note: Son in law of Dolphin A. Pope (moved from Mississippi)

Roy’s note: The following information was related to me by Joseph Vance Kirby,
(brother to Kinnie Lee Kirby Thompson, my Mother) in May of 1970.
Henry
Hampton Pope, my grandfather was born around 1850 and died around 1929. At one time he was as Justice of the Peace in
Columbia County, Arkansas. He was not a big man in statue, in his young
years he was thin but became heavier in old age. At on time probably in 1886 or 1887 he was
appointed a Special Deputy Sheriff and helped to form a posse to arrest a local
outlaw by the name of Jim Coil. The
exact nature of Coil’s crime is not known to me. Another man in the posse was Luke Mason. The Coil homeplace was located north of Welcome Church. On that morning the posse arrived and
surrounded the house in the woods. Coil
was called by name and ask to surrender.
Instead his mother told him to run, he ran from the house and was
crossing a fence when Hamp Popes shot him.
Hamp Pope’s weapon was a rolling block rim fire .32 caliber rifle. It was a single shot rifle made by
Remington. I played with that old gun
when I was a kid. Coil fell but returned
fire with a pistol. His bullet made its
mark also, hitting Pope high in the forehead and splitting his skull. Coil died soon afterwards but Pope had a long
and slow recovery. Pope and Coil were
related. Henry Hampton Pope and all of
the other Popes had a reputation of being rough and tough. Some people were afraid of them. Joseph Augustus Kirby, Pope’s son-in-law was
not among this group. He stood down Pope
on many occasions and the two never did get along very well. Henry Hampton Pope and his wife Charity
Christine Hayes Pope are buried at Spring Branch Cemetery. A Baptist Church is located near by.
