The Dinkey, Corning
Early citizens of Corning spoke affectionately of “The Dinkey.” It ran from Corning to the Ferguson and Wheeler Sawmill on Black River – original site of Hecht City, later Corning, and shunted box cars in the mill yards for loading to bring to the Iron Mountain Mail Line.
The Dinkey Depot was at the foot of East Second at the intersection with East Elm. The Dinkey also carried the mill hands to their work and would do odd jobs of hauling. In the above picture, shell diggers have brought in a load of shells to the button factory that operated just South of Staley Park and the button cutters posed for the picture after they had completed unloading the car.
