"Posed in this picture for the 4th of July Celebration of 1908 as
"Miss Columbus" is Mrs. John M. Rhea (nee Bird Vickrey) of
pioneer Corning family. The picnics in that era were beng held on the
Corning Lake grounds through the courtesy of the Knobel Club that had possession
of the wooded tract on the West banks of the lake, South of their
cottages. There is no record of the first Independence Day celebration in
Corning, but it probably occurred in 1873 in the wooded area that later became
the town square."
