JAMES McCLELLAN, 97 OF LEE TWP.

Another Confederate Veteran Dies Monday: Was Pioneer Settler.
James [ Samuel ] McClellan, aged 97 years, died Monday
morning, March 3, at the home of his grandson, B. H.
[ Benjamin Hyatt ] McClellan in Lee township, south of
New Edinburg, after an illness of three weeks.

Mr. McClellan was born in 1834 in Annibelle [ Abbeville ]
County, South Carolina and moved with his parents
to Mississippi in 1843 where he lived until 1859,
[ actually after 1860 Census ] when he and his family
came to [ Bradley County ] Arkansas and settled near
Warren [ Hurricane Township ]. He was married in 1854
to Miss Huldah Mathis, who died in 1918. To them
were born nine children, only one of whom are now living.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Mr. McClellan enlisted
in the Confederate Army [ 2nd Ark Cavalry, Co. D, Hqtrd
at Panola, MS ] and served throughout the war leaving a
wife and three children at home. After the close of the war
he made his home in this county and near Sheridan. Since
the death of his wife, he has lived with relatives and for
the past two years with his grandson, where he died.

He was a member of the Baptist Church and had a great
number of friends in the sections where he had lived. He
was known to many Rison people as he had visited this
city on several occasions during the past years.

He is survived by one son, Isaac McClellan, an attorney
of Sheridan; three sisters, all of Mississippi; 25 grandchildren,
55 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren
besides a large number of other relatives.

The body was carried to Camp Creek cemetery in
Grant county for burial.

Military Service:
Served in the 2nd Ark Cavalry Co. D during the Civil War,
was at the Fall of Vicksburg [with several other close relatives]
in 1863 by his own statement and verified with records on file
at Vicksburg National Battlefield Park, Attached to the
29th Ark Artillery, held as a Prisoner of War at the Union
POW Camp, Rock Island, Ill. pension and war records held
at the Old State Capital Archives; Little Rock, AR. Received
a war pension from the State of Arkansas for his service
during the Civil War. Documents for pension on file with
Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock, Arkansas.
