Many thanks to Judy Hadokowitz and her niece for their permission to use their Drew County FAQ as the basis for this FAQ!!

1.  What is the Bradley County mailing list?

It's a way for Bradley County researchers to keep in touch with each other through e-mail, no matter where they are "in real life."   It's free and simple--if you can read and send e-mail and have an interest in Bradley County, you're set!

2.  How does it work?

If you subscribe to ARBRADLE, when any member of the mailing list sends an e-mail message To: ARBRADLE@rootsweb.com, you will receive a copy of it in your e-mail.

When you send an e-mail message To: ARBRADLE@rootsweb.com, your message will be sent to everyone on this list.

3.  How is the mailing list related to the web site?

We see them as complements of each other.   We'll announce new features and items on the web site to the mailing list subscribers.   The mailing list will also encourage people to visit the Bradley County web site to search for records.   We also hope the mailing list will encourage folks to submit records for the site!  And we hope the web site will help us attract more researchers to join us on the mailing list.  We have lots of knowledgeable people on the list who love to share information.

4.  Sounds easy enough. What else do I need to know?

Well, to start receiving messages from the list, you'll need to "subscribe".  When you subscribe (remember, it's free!) you can choose to see each email message individually (mail mode), or you can choose to see all of the messages at once in a daily e-mail message (digest mode).   Sometimes we trade so much information that we generate two digests a day, but most days it's only one.   To post to both ARBRADLE (mail mode) and ARBRADLE-D (digest mode), messages should be sent to ARBRADLE@rootsweb.com.  Messages sent there will appear both places..

5.  How do I subscribe?

If you want to receive each message as it is sent:
(mail mode):
a. Go to your email program
b. Send a message to
     arbradle-request@rootsweb.com
c. In the message box type the word:

subscribe
d.  Don't type any thing else, just send it.
Be sure to remove any automatic
signatures too! If your email program
requires a subject, type in "subscribe".
e.  That's all. You're done.

If you want to receive all messages in a daily file:
(digest mode):
a. Go to your email program
b. Send a message to
     arbradle-d-request@rootsweb.com
c. In the message box type the word:

subscribe
d.  Don't type any thing else, just send it.
Be sure to remove any automatic
signatures too! If your email program
requires a subject, type in "subscribe".
e.  That's all. You're done.

If you ever want to switch from message mode to digest mode (or the other way around) you'll need to unsubscribe from one and then subscribe to the other.  To unsubscribe, follow the above directions, just type in unsubscribe instead of subscribe.

6.  Is there any way to search the list archives?

Yes!   And you don't need to be a listmember to search the archives...although we'd love to have you join us if you find a connection to any of the current list members.   To access the list archives, go to the "QUERIES" search box on the Bradley County home page

Choose a year for your search, from 2006 back to 1998, when the list was started.

Then just type in the words or surnames you are looking for.  You'll get a list of any messages on ARBRADLE containing those terms.

You can also browse the list archives from its inception (April 1998) to the present by going to this page.  Then click on whatever month you want to browse, and read the messages with subject lines that interest you. (NOTE: Some subject lines may not really reflect the content of their messages!)

7.  Who are you and why did you start this list?

My name is Melissa Jones.  My roots in Bradley County go back in many cases to the 1840s and 1850s.  In 1998 I was looking around the Web for Bradley County resources and realized that no one had yet created a mailing list for researchers interested in this county.  So I volunteered!  After creating the list, I must admit I've received an added benefit---more new cousins and new friends than I can shake a stick at.  I keep pretty busy maintaining the mailing list, so I can't always answer my e-mail as quickly as I would like.  For the fastest response to your research questions, please join the ARBRADLE list and post your query there.

If you have any problems with your subscription, send me e-mail.  We look forward to meeting you on the Bradley County Mailing List!
